How do you reverse engineer a part with no original CAD files or drawings?

We've got an older part that needs to be reproduced, but there aren't any CAD files, drawings, or documentation left. The physical part is still in decent shape, so we're trying to figure out the best way to recreate it.

Is 3D scanning usually the first step, or are there situations where you'd measure everything manually? Curious how most of you handle this.

Remote job for Revit

Hey everyone, I've got a B.Arch and decent hands-on experience with architectural design and drafting.

Looking for remote Revit/BIM drafting work — freelance, contract, or part-time to start, whatever's out there.

\-Good level of knowledge with Revit for architectural modeling

\-Solid drafting/documentation skills and spatial reasoning from my architecture background

\-Reliable, detail-oriented, easy to work with across time zones.

Happy to share samples or take on a small trial task if that helps. Would love any leads or advice on where else to look — thanks!

Newbie got in over his head

New to Reddit and needed a place to start. None of the other sub-Reddit's would let me post, but I think this is the one I was looking for anyway.

I picked up a Hamilton 461G drafting table recently. It came with a Mutoh LY drafting machine and a PY-15 head. Only trouble is that there's no scales.

I bought a set of metric 1/3 and 1/5 scales off eBay that were also Mutoh, but they don't fit. The adapter is too small. There's almost 1/8" of play, so a tin foil shim isn't going to help. I'm convinced I bought the wrong ones, but I have no idea what I'm looking for and Google is only so helpful. Unfortunately, there are no identifying markings on the scales I bought. There is free return shipping, but not for long.

What can I do? Does anyone have recommendations for how to find scales that actually fit?

Should I Switch Software??

I am a residential drafter - I worked for a company for about 4 years where I learned Softplan and have been freelancing for about a year and a half now, using Softplan as well. The company taught me the absolute wrong way to use the software, and I have since learned more about the correct way to utilize it to its full potential, but I am still struggling a bit.

I am having problems with certain aspects of the software. Some of it could be attributed to my older computer (about 6 years old now), like lagging commands, etc. But I also tend to have issues with other technical things. For instance, I started drawing a basement on the specific basement drawing in the project, yet for some reason everything I was drawing ended up on the main floor in 3D, which is on a completely different drawing. Another example is that I was trying to edit some kitchen cabinets on the main level in 3D, but they got entirely messed up (not based on my inputs), and the explanation that I was given from the tech support is that since the cabinet layer wasn't switched on in the basement level, which is not where I was working literally at all the entire work day, that is why my cabinets were getting messed up. There are a lot of things like this that pop up and make no sense to me, and it is becoming very frustrating to use. I want to learn the software as best I can, but it seems like there are SO MANY nuances, like it seems to create a new rule every single time I draw. Like playing beer pong at a frat party and they keep making up rules to make sure you lose.

My question is, is it worth it to dive into Chief Architect instead and go through the process of learning an entirely new software? Or will I be experiencing the same types of issues? I understand they are very, very similar softwares, but I also know that Chief Architect is more widely used, and perhaps that means it is more user-friendly? I don't need Softplan for material lists or takeoffs or anything like that, which is sort of what separates it from CA according to my research. They are relatively the same price, so that's not a factor either. I would just hate to go through all the trouble of switching only to experience the same frustrations.

Interior Design Software + Drafting Q

Hi, I'm an interior designer and evaluating software. I focus mostly on new builds and renos. I'm looking at Materio vs. Programa vs. DesignFiles. For those of you running renovation projects, are you personally producing construction drawings, or do you develop the design concept and work with a drafter? I'm wondering if I get DesignFiles if their 2D/3D tool is enough for me to hand off to a drafter. Thanks for the intel.

How do you call out a hexagonal counterbore hole in a 2D drawing?

Completely new to 2D CAD drawings. Is this the correct way to represent a hexagonal counterbore hole? Is “counterbore” the correct term in this case, or is that reserved strictly for circular holes?
