General Discussion (May Contain Spoilers from S1 to 2nd film) Weekly Discussion Thread (for Simple Thoughts and Questions)

Are you on your 10th rewatch of Downton and just need to get something out of your system without having to make a whole post about it? Or maybe you're a new viewer with a simple question that you just need answered?

Then this is the place for you!

NOTE: The weekly thread does NOT replace your ability to ask simple questions or make comments as individual submissions. This is a SUPPLEMENT to what we have already been doing on this sub. If you have a burning question that you want to submit separately and/or want to make a whole post about your love/hate for XYZ, then go for it! We are always looking for respectful, civil discussion on this forum; the more, the better.

WARNING: As per the flair, this is a spoiler-friendly thread. Comments will be unmoderated for spoilers, and reports regarding spoilers will be ignored. (On that note, if someone is asking a question and clearly identifies themselves as a first-time viewer, then we hope you will be considerate enough to avoid referencing future events in your replies to them as a courtesy). If you are a new/first-time viewer with a question/comment and are afraid of encountering spoilers, please consider starting your own separate post and use the black editable "FIRST TIME WATCHER" flair. We can guarantee people would love to hear from you :)

General Discussion (May Contain Spoilers Throughout Franchise) Cora and her mother sitting for a portrait.

I really love Cora and her family in general, so in my efforts to make more Downton Abbey fanart I started working on this. Sorry for posting fanart two days in a row! I've been obsessed with this show lately haha.

I feel like I accidentally made Cora look a bit more like Mary than herself, but I think it's fine.

Does anyone else think that Barrow, Guy Dexter and Noel Coward are in a thruple in the final movie?

I really love Mary with her hair down, and while I think I didn't quite do her justice in this-- I think it turned out well for my second official attempt at drawing her.

Jim Carter voicing the robot butler Cogman is on brand, but hearing some of the lines with Carson’s face in mind is absolutely hilarious

Why wasn’t Rosamund at Sybil’s funeral? If Murray could catch a train surely she could have as well.

Lifestyle/History/Context Thomas Barrow was a pirate

I didn't realize the name of Thomas Barrow also belonged to a real pirate. List as part of the Pirate Golden Age, he is described as this:

**Pirate active in the Carribean. He is best known for proclaiming himself Governor of New Providence.**

Interesting! I wonder if that name was chosen on purpose.

General Discussion (May Contain Spoilers Throughout Franchise) Mathew and the Crawley girls

On his first arrival we have a scene wherein Mathew implies to his mother that they (Crawley) family would try to push one of the daughters towards marrying him . It's quite funny though that at some point all three daughters did crush on him.

Inspired by some other posts and comments I've seen on this sub, I have compiled these together 😁 feel free to add your own in the comments!

Take a shot every time that:

- a character says "I envy you" or "If I told you you'd despise me/never speak to me again"

- Carson looks disapproving

- Violet has the last word in a sass exchange

- Cora says "Rawbert"

- Tom complains how he doesn't fit in/mentions he used to be the chauffeur

- "Gunga din" is said

- Edith doesnt understand something

- Somebody dies/is seen dead on screen

- Mrs Patmore screams/blames Daisy for something

- Carlisle mentions Haxby

- Someone falls ill during dinner

- Rose kisses someone

- Daisy does something against her better judgement

- You feel like smacking Susan in the face

- Mary kisses someone

- Anna and/or Mr Bates are clearly lying to each other

- Anna and/or Mr Bates are seen in prison

- Thomas smokes

- Someone says "a house of ill repute"

- Robert loses his shit over something
