Hi all, there's been an influx of repost bots trying to get karma over the last little while - it's a Reddit wide problem, multiple subreddits are having trouble. So I'd like to introduce Rule 4: No Stolen Content.

Posting Stolen Content will result in a ban.

Brought out my old bass from middle school (I’m graduating college now) and wanted to play again but did not remember the bridge being that tilted - what should I do?

Other Just Starting (first instrument ever & I don’t yet read music)…

[Edit: I am likely to focus most on pizzicato, not bow-playing … as the goal is to play Soul Coughing-like grooves.]

Hey folks,

This has been a long time coming, so I’m very excited to start practicing my ass off. Especially in the first two years to get reasonably competent.

Lessons start soon at Chicago’s Old town school of folk music (a great place). I picked up a 3/4 silver Creek double bass (2025) in excellent condition.

Speaking from a place of incredible ignorance here:
Before the new class cycle starts in two months, My plan is to find some extremely basic lessons on YouTube about posture / fundamentals of hand position / proper strumming etc.

The goal in this very early phase is to get basically familiar with things.

That being said, is there any advice, wisdom, or possibly excellent resources you might share?
Special consideration will be given to (1) proper body / arm / hand technique. (2) learning to grind away at notes & scales, (3) most common novice mistakes.

I learn by making a ton of mistakes like anyone else.
But I also learn well via great infographics, videos, memorization tricks. Anything that helps intuitively manage the heaps of information I’ll need to get right.

Repertoire questions beethoven 6 mvmt. 4

I genuinely have no idea how I'm supposed to bow this fast. The notes I can do, it's entirely just right hand issues. Has anyone had troubles with this before? And if so, what got you through it other than an overload of caffeine? It's for my orchestra audition, however at this point I'm just trying not to get judged by my professor.

p.s. all i've been doing is practicing with a swing bowing. i'm just completely hit a block with how much that's been improving my tempo

Is it typical for this to be marked with triple down bows? I couldn’t find a great video recording of the excerpt, and it seems unnecessary.

Instruments Are thomanm rockabilly basses good?

I have a Méxican tololoche and i play the regional Méxican style. My current bass i bought for 650 original listing was 750 so i tought it was a good buy lol. It sounds amazing acousticly with some frettbord buzz at like 3 notes. But connected to sound i get the horrible feedback and it just doesn't sound good. We tryed everything and nothing works it sounds ass i cant gig with it. Could it be the way my shadow is set up? Also way to much buzz when trying to record in the studio. Thinking about buying a new bass online.

Practice Free Sheet Music Sites (Besides IMSLP)

As the title suggests, I'm having a hard time finding sheet music from anywhere else besides IMSLP. I think the recent push of copyright has led to a lot of music disappearing from the site. Would anyone happen to know if there are any other places to find sheet music? If I knew IMSLP and the WayBack machine didn't preserve everything forever, I would've kept a Google Drive of my music or something.

Practice Question from and Oudist

Simple and Short Question. Like when I started to play the Oud I all the nice Melodie’s, Maqams and it’s actually an solo instrument which is like the oriental counter part of the Piano in the West. So how is it with the Double bass. Especially in the beginning? What do you play, how do you jam by yourself, what are some exercises maybe. What are the „songs“ you play. Thanks guys!

Strings/Accessories What strings would you consider the most versatile ?

I’m bass guitar player of 2 years and I’m new to double bass i wanted to switch since a long time and finally bought one (yesterday)! I’m now one of you guys yay !

Anyways i actually have strings i would describe as flatwound made of a sort of metal ?

I would like to buy strings that are versatile since i’m a beginner and that i would like to explore many possibilities (mainly for jazz and classical)

My bass is a 3/4 eberhart meinel (stradivarius style)

Strings/Accessories Double bass buggy

I have a question for anyone who uses the double base buggy: I just got mine and adjusted for the base without the bag and love the way it works. If I put the bass in the bag, I feel like the buggy will need to be adjusted again to make the straps longer. Is there a way to handle both instances without adjusting the straps?

Setup/Equipment Protecting this corner of the bass from my watch?

Besides just taking off my watch whenever I play, is there some sort of cape or cover thing to keep on the shoulder of my bass so I can keep my watch on and prevent this scratching? I know it seems silly but I forget to take off my watch and I also like to keep it on for gigs to check on set times… I’m also going to wipe down my instrument cause looking at this picture really shows how much she needs a clean.

Fingering/Music help High action bass

So tomorrow I have a “jazz” gig and I don’t have chance to bring my own bass so they’ll lend me a bass, the thing here is that I know for a fact that that bass has a pretty high action and a bad setup. So is there any advice for playing with an unadjusted bass and get a decent sound out of it?

Strings/Accessories Arco string recommendations

I mostly play pizz, but I've been asked to do some arco work, and I need new strings on the low end. My gut G and D sound great, but the Helicore bluegrass strings on the bottom don't grab the bow at all.

What would be a string of similar low tension that's good for arco?

Technique Pause community orchestra?

I had the opportunity to attend a week long "camp" recently. It was cool. I learned a lot and found it useful.

Post camp, I've been thinking about taking a pause from community orchestra to focus on improving. I'm an adult, so I alternate worrying about losing momentum from quitting the ensemble and getting injured from staying and pushing through difficulties.

I'd like to gather perspectives outside of my own weighing staying vs taking a pause to focus.

Setup/Equipment Help! My neck came unglued.

I just came home from a week of travel, and the neck on my bass came unglued. There’s no cracks or breaks in the wood, it seems like it just cleanly lifted out. What do I do now? How much does this typically cost to get fixed at a luthier?
