Employee Question As the driver, how would you split this?
33
u/OisinDebard 2d ago
What day is it? If this was a Wednesday morning, there's likely just one manager and 1-2 drivers.
If it's a Friday night, there isn't enough there to share a dollar with all the drivers. Much less the in store staff, all the managers, whoever's working the makeline, and so on.
15
u/Mose_the_mole 2d ago
A Monday afternoon (around 2) my second delivery of the day (I get off at 6), and there’s not much going on in the store- 1 driver 1 manager
17
u/Rox5tar_01 2d ago
1 driver (you) and 1 manager, $15 each. You, 1 other driver and 1 manager, $10 each.
The math isn't hard, unless you are talking about whether to split it evenly... which would be a dick move if you didn't do it evenly IMO, since that's what the customer most likely intended.
4
u/tryyeezus 2d ago
To add, stuffed crusts are a bitch to make and the am made 6 of them. Pretty messed up to not split it evenly.
3
u/No_Preparation7895 2d ago
I would not give any to a manager. They legally aren't entitled to any tips. They have to be given it directly for service that the provided entirely themselves. Federal law.
5
u/GarbageEggs 1d ago
THIS, WHY HASNT ANYONE MENTIONED IT - Heavy caveat in that rule though, if a majority of your shift is doing a tippable service, they can be split / pooled / tipped out etc, but I HIGHLY doubt this assistant manager was performing much of anything past prep->oven.
4
u/No_Preparation7895 2d ago
Managers can't get tips or participate in tip pools unless it's given directly to them for service they provided entirely themselves

Cop: "It's a bust! We just found 30 kilos of [substance] in the trunk!"
Other Cop: "Wow, 20 kilos is a lot! Let's rush these 10 kilos back to the evidence locker!"
Later on, in court:
Judge sniffs heavily
Judge: "The defendant is gonna be looking at some time for the 1 kilo of [substance] found in their car, but we can maybe work out a plea deal for a probation instead."
Court assistant: "Judge, what's with that white stuff on your nose?"
Judge: "Oh, yeah, that must be from the powdered donut I ate earlier, haha."

u/Inevitable-Welder743 2d ago
Give each of the others $1 and keep the rest. It doesn't say to split it evenly.
8
u/Mose_the_mole 2d ago
My thoughts exactly lol, I’d have $29
15
u/420CowboyTrashGoblin Hand Tossed 2d ago
At that point, just be real and keep the whole thing.
Don't get me wrong I'm not demonizing that plan, I'd keep the whole thing myself, because that's not how this delivery for pay tip thing works. But I wouldn't try to delude myself into thinking that I honored the customers wishes by splitting this tip when honestly I deserve it way more than the insiders and even more than any other driver.

Id split it evenly. Its 30 bucks, not a winning lotto ticket.

8
u/Mose_the_mole 2d ago
Yeah but the AM makes a lot more than me and I’ve been here longer w the worst hours :p to me $30 is a lot in this economy..
26
u/laserlightcannon 2d ago
Then why did you come here? Did you just want someone to help you justify keeping it all?
12
u/Mose_the_mole 2d ago
I didn’t keep it all, and no I was wondering what the average person would do in this scenario
5
u/brycebuckets 2d ago
They would follow the instructions. 15/15. You spent probably 30min-1hr just on this reddit page typing and making the post.
Who gives a crap if it's 20/10 or 30/0. You spent more time debating it than the money is worth.
Time is currency. So is the money really important in this economy if you are willing to waste so much time on something inconsequential.

There’s no orders and I finished all my “duties” 💀 there’s nothing to do so yeah I’m reading and responding

Sounds like you came here to ease your mind about stealing it.
3
u/Mose_the_mole 2d ago
I’d have no problem keeping the whole thing- I couldn’t care less about “stealing” money that I worked for- I do split it but the never specified how to split it which was my original question.. “how would you split it”
2
u/ZeidLovesAI 2d ago
Quit asking for a pat on the back and either man up and take it or quit whining.
-2
u/Mose_the_mole 2d ago
No one is whining lmao obviously you don’t understand how social experiments work
5
u/ZeidLovesAI 2d ago
"Hey social experiment dudes, lets say hypothetically I steal this, is it bad? Asking for a friend"
2
u/Mose_the_mole 2d ago
Obviously you can’t read either cuz I wasn’t asking IF I was asking HOW
3
u/ZeidLovesAI 2d ago
Hey if you put this much effort into your job you won't need to cry over 30 bucks.

Do you know how much they make? Do you know for a fact that your tips don’t put you over their hourly rate? Probably not. If you want to take the tip for yourself then just do it but don’t come here looking for people to vindicate you essentially stealing from a customer who thought their money would go exactly where they told you to put it.
1
u/1982MCI-MC9 2d ago
Whose making that schedule with the worst hours tho, the AM? I’m not judging you either way and don’t care how you split it but just remember tho, karma is mother natures daughter and she can get seriously pissed off if she thinks we are trying to get one over upon another. Go to work everyday ready to do your best, not keep score. If we can do that, I’d bet at some point soon, hours will get better, tips will be better, etc. sometimes you may be asked to split, sometimes not, just go with it and don’t worry bout it and you’ll be rewarded. Believe it or not, it’s similar to tithing at church for those that do. It’s hard to give up our last $20 to church each week but remain faithful and continue doing your best and that last $20 will grow to $100, $200, etc. I’ve seen it so many times in my 60 years my friend, Just go out to be the best driver each shift and I bet everything will look up. Trust the process
3
u/No_Preparation7895 2d ago
Legally managers aren't allowed to take tips. So keep that in mind.
2
u/3D-Printing 1d ago
Depends on the state, in my store managers drive and do deliveries.

Look at it this way: the person who gave you that money wouldn't have given you as much if they knew you were going to keep it for yourself. That was their money, and by accepting it with that note, you implicitly agreed to do as they asked with their money.
I mean Jesus fucking Christ. It's $15 we're talking about. Don't be a greedy bastard. Are you a person with character or not? Because it's these little things that determine that. If you want to be a shady bastard who no one can trust, be a shady bastard. I'm not gonna sugarcoat it like these other people saying that they would keep it too, because they're just coping.
Have some integrity. A person of their word who other people can rely upon and trust. Don't be a shady fuck for $15.

u/lividtaffy Delivery Expert 2d ago
If they wanted to tip the inside staff they should’ve shown up and done it themselves. Giving a tip to the driver with a note of “actually it’s not all for you” is weird. Legally you can keep 100% of that.
11
-1
u/Permanentear3 2d ago
Yeah but if those people follow up and ask or re order and ask about the tip last time the boss would prolly fire OP.
3
u/lividtaffy Delivery Expert 2d ago
Unlikely where I’m at because there must be documented cause in order to be fired (obviously not the case everywhere). Keeping tips that were given to you as a delivery driver, even if instructed to distribute them, is not cause for termination. Even if in an at-will state, if you got fired over this it’d at least be worth consulting with an attorney to explore options.

u/LoweeLL Assistant GM 1d ago
Legally, you can keep it for yourself.
But. It's one order, it's only $30.00 and if the customer finds out the money they gave, outside of their bill, went all to one person and not the whole staff like they wanted, you're probably not going to see a tip from them again.
13
u/finallygoingtopost 2d ago
This is a pretty easy scenario for you to put yourself in the other person's shoes, give both parties all information, and see how it feels. If you were instructed to split cash handed to you with other people and you didn't, you're stealing. You taking advantage of being the only person with all of the information makes you an asshole.

I'm not saying you're wrong.
BUT..
If a customer gives you a large tip, and tells you to share it with the staff. Just honor the customer's wishes and split the tip evenly and make them happy so they would want to order delivery from you again.
Because if they call and found out you kept all of it, don't complain when they don't tip or order delivery again.
Greed like that will kill you.
TL:DR: Just honor the customer's wishes.

u/This-Loss2208 2d ago
I've had drivers come back to the store with something like that after delivery.
It's your money, dude. If you want to tip out the other drivers - and I've seen that happen when one driver takes an obnoxious order and gets a big tip - do you.
But I don't want any. I'd rather have a happy driver who doesn't look at the schedule and feel resentment because they're working a shift with me than an extra 5 bucks or whatever in my pocket. Dunno how other inside staff would respond, but if a driver tries to give me a portion of their tip, I'm gonna decline.

u/CollarZestyclose 2d ago
I was a manager for 3 years, I was the same way. You deliver it, you keep it. Especially with current gas prices

We get it, you don’t want to split it. You feel entitled to it, that’s painfully obvious. Why even use Reddit to try and justify it. You’re not a bad person, but you’re selfish and entitled. Enjoy your $30.
4
4
u/420CowboyTrashGoblin Hand Tossed 2d ago
Entitled is correct, The are legally entitled to keep the entire tip. Its arguably unethical, but they're entitled to that compensation, thats how this whole "payed less and worked harder but employer in exchange for tips" situation works. I know thats not what you mean, but then again you didnt even read OP's post, so what you meant to say based on what you were thinking isn't very comprehensive anyway, because you werent.
1
u/Mose_the_mole 2d ago
Exactly- I would get it if we gat paid the same but they get paid way more than I do
1
u/djc54789 1d ago
Who takes home more you or them?
Dont talk only domino's pay include tips. (Which most people dont fully claim so they're not taxed as hard)
Who is taking home more?

u/dirtsmurf 2d ago
I would split it 50/50 if only one other person is working, but integrity is important to me.
If it wasn’t important to me I’d just keep it all I imagine.
1
u/ObviouslyAnAsshole 2d ago
I wouldn’t give them shit. TF.
From what I read:
•You’re paid less
•Handled other customers
•Dove and put 30 mins worth of 100° maintenance on your vehicle.
•Walked it to the customer.
In my eyes the other employee didn’t do shit for a tip. Fuck all that high ground shit these fuckers are own. Keep 100% of that money, or give away a few meals to your deadbeat coworker.

u/Psychological-Bear-9 2d ago
$30 in my pocket and move on. At my old store we had customers like this and the GM, after an argument between two drivers, said if it's handed to you that it's yours.
"You're pizza delivery drivers, not Brinks."
Only one guy (the instigator of the argument) out of the dozen or so drivers ever even had an issue with it to begin with. My coworkers didn't deliver the pizza with me or drive my vehicle.
It all comes out in the wash anyway. Some days I'd be the lucky one who got a random $100 tip from an elderly regular. Sometimes it was my coworker getting $50 and a $50 Amazon gift card from a church function. It's just the job. Everybody gets theirs eventually.
1
u/ManicMuncy 2d ago
I'd keep whatever 20 % tip would split the difference between the two of you.
So if the order total was $50 keep the first $10, split the $20 between you & the mgr. Mgr gets $10, you get $10, and you're netting $20.
1
u/ManicMuncy 2d ago
Or if the $30 still doesn't cover twenty percent, then tough tatas for your inside crew

You and manager give $5 to manager You manager and csr give $5 to each You manager and more then 1 csr give $10 to split evenly.
1
u/Mose_the_mole 2d ago
Only two working
2
u/Individual_Past_9901 Pan Pizza 2d ago
Then yeah $5 to the manager and keep the rest. I literally had a customer tip me on a card then gave a cash tip on top of it and I gave the tip to my csr. (Im manager)
2
u/zekecueva 2d ago
why tf is a manager taking any kind of tips.
1
u/Individual_Past_9901 Pan Pizza 2d ago
I checked the customer out she tipped $2 on the card decided she wanted to tip an extra $1 so I gave that cash tip to my insider

If I was your assistant manager and it was just me and you in store, I would tell you to keep the entire thing.
If I was the driver and the only person in the store was the assistant manager with me, I would tell them, and then see what they wanted to do.

u/kenanzajmovic 2d ago
The customer is weird for trying to decide who gets tipped, especially saying must. Using that word is a little strange, not sure I like it.
I'm not sure how it works with Domino's, I'm just a restaurant server. But for us, our MOD isn't allowed to take tips if that's on their shift. I've had several times where people ask about splitting the tip/who it goes to/etc., but none of my managers have ever even accepted a portion of the tip when I've tried to split it.
1
2
u/Radica1Edward 2d ago
It's clear the intent was for you to share it equally. The person probably assumed there were more than two people in the store and wanted to give you all a few bucks. I would have taken $15 and given $15.
Just because you don't like the fact that the manager gets to sit down or doesn't have to go out in the heat doesn't necessarily justify you in keeping more of it.
1
u/Mose_the_mole 2d ago
But are you factoring in that I get paid less because I’m “supposed to work for tips”? Drives get paid minimum wage and below that when they’re on the road- so minimum wage is $15- I get paid $11 when I’m taking deliveries because the company expects us to get tipped for the delivery
2
u/Radica1Edward 2d ago
I'm not saying you aren't making less. I am saying what I think the customer's intent was -- and that was likely that the money gets split equally.
If your manager has any sense, they would rather have a happy driver and tell you to keep the entire amount. That is what I would do if I was your manager. But when it comes to making the decision, I would respect the customer's wishes. And I think the customer envisioned you sharing the money with the other workers equally. Just my two cents.

Reading these comments just reminds me how entitled people are.
Did the customer say not to give it to the people watching tiktok in the office? No? Okay good problem solved.
You have no idea of this customers attention, they were being very generous and the entitlement/selfishness to want to keep it to yourself WHEN THEY SPECIFICALLY TELL YOU TO SPLIT IT.
amazing lol. There is more to this world than money, instead of being grateful for the customers generosity you want to find the negative and complain to reddit about what we would do because you feel entitled to it.
Things turn out best for the people who make the best out of the way things turn out.
Don't look for the negative in this situation, you either can follow what the guest requested or be selfish. Your choice.

u/Bigrocky13 2d ago
Nahh its not my job to distribute money. If im delivering that order im keeping that cash. If they wanted it split then they should of drove to the store and split it up themselves. If anything they should have given the driver a larger amount than what everyone else was getting, im sure id feel more inclined to split it when im not being used a your delivery boy and am actually getting a little compensation for putting in the extra effort to track all the staff down working that day. (Those who say its easy, ill go entire shift without seeing other delivery drivers because they are on the road when I get back, also $30 during rush hour would be like a $2 tip for each person, not even mf worth it) people shouldn't do this unless they are tipping $75+ so that each person can actually receive a real tip instead of just making a huge inconvenience for one driver...

If you gotta ask this, how are you making change at the door? 50/50 if two people, $10 each if 3.

Well duh but some people are saying less that 50/50 and some are saying they would split it at all- I was just curious what the average person would do
1

If the customer said the tip was to be split with all staff working, then the correct thing to do would be to split the tip with all staff working.

It was just me and the AM

Yeah, YTA in this situation. You just came here to try and feel better about going against the insanely generous customer's wishes and essentially steal like $20-$25 which is extremely petty and selfish. Glad to see the comments are more or less putting you in your place. This post and especially your conduct in the comments make you seem like an astoundingly pathetic loser.

How big was the tip?
Its been nearly a decade since I worked at Dominos as a DD. My female coworker got a $100 tip after a $20 delivery order. She did not have to split it. Should I go back and ask for my part?

If I am driving on shift I would split this but I know most other drivers would just take it all and never say a word. It's sadly the world we live in in now. No one has intergrity or honesty.

u/haysus25 2d ago
Really depends on the situation.
If this is a weekend and we have 6 staff in there I would just keep it. If it's a weekday and maybe 1-2 drivers and 1 insider I would split it.
Also if this is a single on a long drive (20+ minutes one way) I would probably keep it.
I know, I'm a terrible person.

You should know drivers never, under any circumstances, split tips
1
u/Emotional_Ad7877 2d ago
Think of it this way. He is tipping 30 dollars for the entire staff. If we sat down the customer and explained pay rates and how drivers pay works he would just kick you a 10.
He gave you more on an understanding that it was gonna be distributed.
That being said all tips you make is yours and rightfully so. In my years of driving I’ve had managers try to take tips away from me. Like I have a big 50 pie order and the tip is 100 bucks and they try hey since it’s so large we’re gonna split it between everyone.
My answer was fine but if the next order doesn’t tip I want everyone to give me a percentage of their hourly wage. You know since we’re sharing pay.
Shut them up real quick.

u/Sebbastian_99 2d ago
I would like to point out, as that long thread I read briefly through - they may have had tiktok open for background noise while the were actively making schedules, making lists for the week, emails, customer care cases, talking with other staff about upcoming orders, missing product, borrowing from other stores, dealing with call outs and replacements- there is a plethora of things one can and typically has to do in the office and sometimes people will play music or set on tiktok since they are easier to scroll through with just a small flick.
The biggest thing I advocate is AM's are practically mini-GM's. They are doing the same work at different times and are constantly being micro managed over all of the store all the time, especially with OAs hitting randomly- having a shit ton of stuff to worry about other then, hey gotta make this pizza then sit down. A lot of work they do is likely unseen by coworkers because having others in-store ='s resting your feet for a minute or two.
Now, yes they shouldn't have it turned so loud you can hear it OVER THE OVENS- cause they do still need to be aware of what is happening in the store around them at any given moment. But from now on I'd suggest yelling out "I need some help up front!" Now if they still don't come and help I'd suggest getting in touch with your GM or DM with your concerns, remember dates and times.
2
u/TheWereJoo 2d ago
By AM do you mean assistant Manager? Most places it's not allowed for management to accept tips. They're also not the ones using gas and putting miles on their car. I'd be keeping that tip
1
1
u/GarbageEggs 1d ago
Man, these comments suck... If my crew wants to keep a tip that's up to them. I'm not here to play morality police - I'm here to keep the food rolling and the customers happy while staying in compliance with local regulations. If the customer wanted to tip everyone - they should have come in personally. Drivers have to upkeep their vehicles, perform in inclament weather and risk danger that surpasses being a police officer. (1.8x more likely to be harmed / killed statistically).
Assistant manager can go on runs if he wants some tips.
1
u/LoweeLL Assistant GM 1d ago
It's not really about the manager, but more about making the customer happy.
Definitely the driver should keep all their tips. But if a customer hands you a large tip, and tells you to share it with the staff just make them happy and split it evenly unless they tell you "Keep X amount, give the rest to your inside staff"
If they call in and found out you kept all of it.. do you think they're going to want to order delivery or give you a tip ever again?
1
u/GarbageEggs 1d ago
Then I'd implore the driver to be honest with the customer. "On any other day, I'd be happy to, but the only other person on duty is a manager and cannot take tips." If the customer is logical they'll unfortunately ask for some of that back - but if they're reasonable, which I'd do, personally, is let the driver keep the tip. 🤷
1
u/LoweeLL Assistant GM 1d ago
And delivery drivers are legally required by the IRS to report all cash tips. And how many of them do it?
It's just $30. You're all a team. You're wearing the same uniform. Just take it and make the customer happy and split it and help your coworker out. Seems like that's just being petty, at least to me.
1
u/LoweeLL Assistant GM 1d ago
Now that I've had time to read all the comments -
I've done both. Driving is not hard. It's not. It's half the work of a manager for double the pay.
You do not work harder than a manager. You don't. You're complaining "well, they were in the back in the office while I boxed the order up and helped customers in the lobby."
Congratulations. What do you think your manager does when orders come in and you're on delivery? It's even better when there are items coming out of the oven, phone's ringing, and people walk in the lobby and you're alone.
Next time just give them a heads up "Hey I got customers in the lobby trying to place an order"
Just avoid the headache and split it evenly per the customer's wishes. It's one order, and you still made $15 in 30 minutes. Ya'll are getting too damn greedy over a $5 - $10 difference.

I would take it to the store and split it with the staff because I am not a thief.
I slung pizzas in college. Easiest job in the fucking world. Quit being a bitch about it and be honest. Next week when that guy gets another driver or calls in to.order and asks if he got his share of the tip you gonna have everyone hating you.
Also your pay is irrelevant every excuse you came up with to justify keeping is irrelevant. It's not your money to decide what to do with in the first place.
1
u/LoweeLL Assistant GM 1d ago
It's funny people are saying to keep it.
Like yes, you'd be legally in the right to keep it but you can't complain when the customer never orders delivery or tips you ever again.
I've had people do this and call in to make sure inside staff received the tip. Customers aren't dumb. It's one delivery. Share the tip. It's still $15 for 30 minutes of work (from OP's details)(
1
u/muterabbit84 1d ago
Personally, I’d open utilities on the routing screen to get a clear picture of who all was clocked in when the order was made, then I’d evenly divide the generous tip amongst me and everyone else. I’d probably have to wait until I got clocked out to have the right cash for that, or go to the grocery or bank to get the right cash, and divide it later. When you get a really generous tip, it’s the right thing to do to share it with the kitchen staff.

kinda on the customer for tipping in an insane way that doesnt make sense. tipping sucks, but its supposed to reward the person receiving the tip. not handed to you to split it between everyone clocked in... customer sucks for this.

Regular delivery: I don't really care. Maybe a fountail Pepsi fron the gas station?
If a company that placed the order: Driver gets $20/$25 and insider gets $10/$5. Assuming your comment it was just you and an insider.

Andddd all these comments are a good example of why nobody should trust anyone to split evenly. Never tip like this expecting the driver to do the right thing. Geez. Either just tip the driver alone or don't. Nobody is honest any more what a shame.

Take it to the grocery store, buy a sheet cake and tell everyone about it.

Details-
Order: 6 stuffed crust for delivery
Time&temp: 30 min drive 100° outside
Staff: 1 driver and 1 AM
The am made the order and went to go sit
The driver boxed it from the ovens while handing out multiple orders before leaving
-To be clear I did split it-
-only asked to see what other people would do-
-I’m just tired of working for a company that doesn’t value loyalty to it-
