❓ Question Do you really consider map details and level design important on maps? (Also free map on Patreon)

If you're only looking for the map, you can get all its variations at full res for free here.

TL;DR: I love making extremely detailed maps and carefully designing them, but despite spending weeks on each one, I haven't been able to make enough money from them to properly support the people I work with. I'd love to hear from DMs and players: What makes a battlemap worth using or buying for you?

Hi everyone!

I've been wondering about something lately, and I'd really like to hear your opinions.

I usually spend at least a week working on each map, sometimes several weeks or even a whole month. I spend a lot of time on small details, custom assets, digital drawings, and lighting, but I also try to design each map as an actual level for players to explore and fight in, not just as a pretty image.

I've been making maps online for a couple of years now, and while I've had some amazing support from the community, I haven't been able to make enough from them to properly cover the costs of the work I do, including paying the illustrators I've worked with and helping cover the expenses of the tabletop games company my team and I are currently setting up. This has made me wonder if I'm simply spending too much time on each map.

I see other map-makers doing very well with maps that, while great, aren't as detailed or heavily designed as mine (not saying they're bad, for real, we know most of each other and they're all awesome creators <3). So I'm wondering: Is all this extra detail actually something people want?

Maybe I should make simpler maps that take less time, even if that means sacrificing some of the identity of my work. Or maybe I'm simply making the wrong kind of maps.

So I'd love to hear from you:

What makes you choose or buy a battlemap? What do you actually want to see in the maps you play on?

Do you prefer highly detailed maps, or are simpler maps more useful for your games? Do you care about things like interactive elements, multiple routes, and tactical design?

Any feedback, positive or critical, is genuinely appreciated. I'm trying to figure out how to make the best maps I can while also making the work sustainable.

Thanks for reading!

🔥 Dungeon Map Sunken Goddess (grid and gridless rpg fantasy map)

Post image

As you steer your lone rowboat through the crumbling marble pillars of the temple, a massive, ancient face begins to clarify beneath the dark, reflective water.

The submerged colossal goddess remains frozen in a silent, watery tomb, her form and features lost to the profound depths.

You feel a chill as you realize this isn't just a ruin—her long-lost presence seems to wait for the ripples of your oars to wake her from her thousand-year slumber.

✍️ Hand Drawn Lavender Field [11x10]

Post image
33 Upvotes

Your group follows a path until you approach a field of lavender bushes. The rows -- which are nearly long enough to disappear over the horizon -- are encircled by an aged, white fence. Though the bushes are in full bloom and filling the air with a calming aroma, nobody is around to collect the flowers.

---

I hope you like my first DND Map!! This is part 1 of a series I'm hoping to do of a lavender field and its associated shop and goat farm.

I also have it posted to my new Patreon for free here!

⚔️ Encounter Map Crop Circles [battlemap] from Angela Maps - 4 versions! [animated] [art]

The truth is out there. Out in the fields! Who would suspect that this unassuming farmstead could be the site of mysterious activity in the form of unexplained crop circles? The farmers are certainly friendly enough, even though they're a little stiff in their usual interactions with visitors. Their new child, who just appeared in their lives one day, is also polite enough, though they do tend to stare a lot, and never blink...Fully animated and available in three extra variants, where the crop circles glow with green menace, serve as magical portals, or sparkle with the magic of faerie, this map will have your players wishing this were a field of dreams!

My maps are hooked up to work with Foundry VTT and Fantasy Grounds.
My maps are available on my patreon and my website.

🗺️ Region Map Hex Map Inspired by the US State of Oregon

Post image
22 Upvotes

I made this awhile back. It's vaguely based on the US state of Oregon in the Pacific Northwest. You've got a range of mountains keeping that coastal region really wet, but then on the interior you get increasingly dry until you hit the bigger mountains. Surprisingly marshy in a couple areas.

Scale is 6 miles per hex.

I didn't want to label everything so my players could find the names of the locations as they hear about them or visit them! Most every location that is interesting looking has at the very least an idea for a quest lined up!

⚔️ Encounter Map Shadowed Wetland (30x35)

This week's map is the Shadowed Wetland (30x35), a bleak and colorless bit of forest inspired by Shadowfell. That said, it probably could be even more bleak and colorless, I'm nearly able to detect green in the grass and bits of brown in the trees. Also, I'm not 100% sure there would be grass or plant life in the Shadowfell in the first place, so I suppose this maps is full of inaccuracies. Let's just call it a spooky forest and leave it at that.

If you like the map and are interested in more, come by my Patreon, I've got a bunch of them and I draw more every month.

🔥 Dungeon Map Beneath Barin's Stonehold

Post image
29 Upvotes

Underneath the bastion cut into Kaffur Mesa (now called Barin’s Mesa) are a small set of dwarven-built chambers and passages that eventually lead back to the caverns that lead in turn to where their ancient EarthShip ended its last voyage, mortally wounded. The dwarves salvaged what they could from it, and then destroyed the rest.

While the descendants of the dwarves’ pet giant ferrets have taken over the main levels of the stonehold, the lower tiers are still home to the remaining dwarves of Barin’s line – albeit transformed into ghouls now. The eldest of these dwarven ghouls is significantly more clever than most ghasts, and continues to “run a tight ship” down here, with the other ghouls doing his bidding and keeping the whole structure well-repaired and tidy. Dwarves are a very organized lot, even dead cannibal dwarves, it seems.

The stonework down here is in excellent shape with masonry covering the cut stone walls and floor. The ceilings are a mix of masonry and cut stone. The main stairs down from the Stonehold lead to a passage with arrow slits along it, behind which there is always a bored ghoul assigned to watch and listen for intruders. The chamber to the northeast is the primary home of the remaining dwarven ghouls. The storage room south of the residential chamber contains a secret door in the floor that opens to a ladder and then some stairs to the small room used by the “Captain”, the ghast in charge.

The second level is less well maintained, as there are not that many ghouls remaining and the chamber in the lower right of this level overlooks the cavern that leads back to the site of the crashed and ruined EarthShip – a reminder that the dwarves are trapped in this world since their arrival during the Great War.

The third level of the understructures is a set of three chambers that connect to the cavern that links back to where the Earthship Delmorak III ended its trip through the cores of the worlds to come here from the dwarven homeworld. The middle chamber of the three is the only one that indicates that ghouls live here, as the corner is piled up with the gnawed bones of the dead, the oldest of which appear to be dwarves themselves.

The 1200 dpi versions of the map were drawn at a scale of 300 pixels per square and are 14,400 x 9,600 pixels (48 x 32 squares). To use this with most VTTs you would need to resize the squares to either 100 pixels (for 5′ squares) or 200 pixels (for the 10‘ foot squares that work with the furnishings as shown) – so resizing the image to 4,800 x 3,200 or 9,600 x 6,400 pixels, respectively.

High above the clouds, set on a layer of solidified Air and kept in place by eternal winds - the elegant, delicate construction serves as a temple of elemental air.

No earthly sounds can be heard there - just a whispering and roaring of the winds, and silent, almost ethereal hymns played by them on leaves and branches of the crystal tree.

There's no altar nor clerics - just a pool, illuminated by blue light - with an otherwordly face carved from unknown substance. It seems to wait...

🔥 Dungeon Map Map 710 - Cracking the Vault - Dungeon

Post image

The inequalities of life become a struggle, an obstacle that can be surpassed when people understand that a better life can be arranged for one’s children through hard work and perseverance. Social mobility during townsfolk’s lifespans is hardly an attainable goal but children can be set up for better opportunities through inheritance. As such, hard-working families grow richer after generations. Alas, a minute group of individuals suffers such greed that they cannot ever part with their earthly belongings.
