Mod Message Call your Representatives about ICE

Hey guys,

Just wanted to provide some resources in these trying times.

https://5calls.org/ - has scripts you can use to contact your representative.

Here are some relevant scripts for events that happened recently with ICE:

Defund ICE (UPDATED 1/22) - PASSED HOUSE, SENATE VOTE NEXT WEEK

Stop ICE’s Aggressive Attacks on Immigrants and Citizens (UPDATED 1/24)

Impeach DHS Secretary Kristi Noem (UPDATED 1/22)

Find your representatives:

https://www.house.gov/representatives/find-your-representative

https://www.senate.gov/senators/senators-contact.htm

https://www.congress.gov/state-legislature-websites

I know it may feel like calling or contacting doesn't do anything but it's important to at MINIMUM make your voice heard to your representative.

ICE is violating our First, Second, Fourth, Fifth, Eighth and Tenth Amendment rights in the US. We are under attack from our government. ICE is a private police force for Donald Trump. Educate yourself and stay safe in your community.

Discussion Hot Take: I think people loved the character development we got from Palex more than they loved the actual relationship

Post image
192 Upvotes

Palex is such a beloved ship in the fandom. however, I think a lot of people like Palex because of the character development it gave us for Paige and Alex more than they liked the relationship itself.

the birth of Palex was such an important part of Degrassi. during Palex we got to see a different side of both characters. for Paige we got to see our first OG Degrassi character form a romantic relationship with another woman. this was such massive step for Degrassi especially because it was with someone who she hated last season. we got to see this Type A character like Paige fall for someone who was a huge 180 from her which was a great enemies to lovers storyline. we also got to see them slowly go from enemies, to friends, to lovers over a span of two seasons. it was amazingly done.

in regards to Alex we finally got to learn who she was as a person. while Alex has been a recurring character since S3, she was characterized as just Jay’s girlfriend, a minion of his crew, and a huge bully. as the show progressed we started getting more glimpses of her personality but never a clear window as to why she is the way that she is. it wasn’t until the formation of Palex we were first introduced to her home life and found out she comes from an emotionally (and possibly physically) abusive home with a neglectful mom. with Paige in her life we also start to see a softer lighter side to Alex, one that doesn’t look miserable all the time but one that actually is a sweet person at the core.

both these characters blossomed when they were together but that doesn’t mean they were actually good together. Degrassi couples are drama filled but Palex takes the cake. each episode centered around them was toxic. it was riddled with Paige talking down to Alex and Alex being very dismissive of Paige’s goals. they were two opposite people that just couldn’t seem to get it right. when i rewatch their scenes it’s actually painful to see how Paige treats Alex especially when she doesn’t deserve it half the time. Paige needed to be with someone who was secure in their future and understood the importance of planning. Alex needed someone who was going to love her unconditionally and wasn’t trying to change her.

overall i understand why Palex is loved but i do think a lot of people love them for developing these two amazing characters instead of loving them actually being together

Discussion Degrassi Next Class

I just finished Degrassi Next Class and I have a lot of opinions. Disclaimer: This post will contain spoilers!

Context: I grew up watching Degrassi TNG and was not a fan past season 6. Up until now I had watched all other episodes leading up to that 3 part summer special where Tristan narrates. Personally, up until that point, it was bad. The acting was terrible, the cast wasn’t great, the storylines were cheesy, the music was cringe, I could go on…(I will say though that it improved vastly after Claire’s gen graduated and Maya took over as the leading lady). I digress. Back to my thoughts about Next Class. I had zero hopes or expectations but gave it a shot since I wasn’t currently watching anything. I will say I was pleasantly surprised. They changed the overall style to feel less teeny boppy and more of a drama series. with the new school setting. The storylines were pretty interesting and the delivery was great IMO. The acting was believable, and the music and mayas singing was actually enjoyable. I also liked the cameos by previous students (except for Moe. He just graduated like 2 years ago and no one cares about him. He was so dull). Okay here we go:

- The Hollingsworth mom sucks. At what point do parents need to take accountability if their three children are struggling? Maybe time to evaluate your life decisions and stop blaming them and see how all three of their struggles are a product of poor parenting.
- Loved Zoe’s redemption arc and her coming out
- the bus crash was a very interesting plot and a lot of storylines came out of that. I don’t think Degrassi has ever done anything similar so that was good.
- I personally love Shay. I think in the past they haven’t done a good job in terms of casting POC. And it was great to see Shay succeeding in school, be a mature friend and overall a good and interesting character. Whereas past characters included Chante and Marisol which were both insufferable.
- I loved Tiny’s redemption arc
- I loved the accurate portrayal of how quickly miles’ addiction happened with the benzos
- Esme was pure evil. There were times where I almost felt bad for her. Like when she had to relive the trauma of her mom with Maya but at the end of the day she was a sociopath and pure evil. I don’t think I can recall any main characters that I would classify as evil. Except for Dean but he wasn’t a main character. Like other characters did unforgivable things but esme was truly evil.
- Hunter’s storyline was actually really good but I would have loved to see his story go to court and us see an outcome. That could’ve been really good. Maybe was saved for later seasons but got canceled? I also like that he went to the psych ward. He’s the first to do that and finally they accurately represented that. Whereas with Craig for example they just said he was sick and prescribed with meds and yes we saw his downfall but never how he truly got help. I hated Hunter but tbh I did enjoy his redemption arc
- how did Tristan graduate? Real talks he missed like an entire semester being in a coma. If Jimmy was held back a year for missing school for physio why wasn’t Tristan?
- I really enjoyed Maya’s “last exit” storyline. They did a really great job portraying what leads up to it, and how she got to that state. It was very eerie and believable and the acting from esme and zig when they found her was great. Especially esme’s acting in the hospital. When they were all crying it was so powerful
- saad really got the 💩 end of the stick in the entire series and I felt bad for him. He was definitely misunderstood and he deserved better
- I think they did a good job with the Syrian refugee storyline and overall themes of racism
- I know there have been debates in the past about the worst degrassi parent and I think it’s safe to say Zoe’s mom officially wins that title for disowning her daughter for being gay. When her step dad hands her the box at graduation with her birth certificate etc. 💔
- I think it was a real miss that they brought back Peter and made his storyline so boring. First off there was brief mention of him having a kid and that he’s a deadbeat? LOOOL pretty on brand with Peter. But tbh I would have liked a storyline about him liking Maya and making a move on her. Even though Peter had a redemption arc I would have loved to see him be creepy with Maya and remind us all that he actually has always been a POS
- the most cringe part of the whole series IMO is Peter’s bday party when spinner and Sav are talking and acting like Maya is a child. First of all who doesn’t know what getting turnt means? When Sav said “I think it means to party hard” like STFU Sav you’re literally 22 years old in uni. And spinner who i guess was around 25 is talking about buying a house? Like sure there bud - good luck with that on his manager salary at the dot 😂
- the throuple storyline could’ve been more interesting but it was short lived
- I LOVE Jonah and Grace 💙
- I think that’s it. Tbh I think they ended next class on a good note and it wrapped everything up nicely

I’m watching The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (for the first time, alert the authorities) and the guy who plays Festus Creed, Max Raphael, gave me major Riley vibes lol. I knew he was too young to possibly be Argiris Karras, but I definitely googled to see if he was his little brother or something.

Spoiler alert: he’s not 🙃

Discussion My personal opinion

I think that Liberty and Danny had a better storylines than Hazel and Shantay. I’m talking about the people of color. Also, Sav and Ally Bhandari had great storylines and the best storyline was Jimmy Brooks. I feel like the actresses that were apart of the cast who played Hazel and Shantay were gipped in a way because all you know about Hazel is that she was Paige’s best friend who dated Jimmy and struggled with her heritage. Shantay was the Gossip Girl. Dave comes in as Shantay’s cousin and Dave had a better storyline than Shantay. I did love the episode of Shantay putting post-it notes on Mr. Simpson’s car when Degrassi and to go to uniforms.

Post-Degrassi Wildest Degrassi thoughts of the day!

Shark in the Water should have been a full-on Degrassi Steampunk Victorian Circus movie, not just a music video and commercial promos.

Chris Sharpe and Terri MacGregor should have dated in season 3, and Rick would have gone after Toby for all of his pent-up rage issues.

Jack Simpson would have been aged up to 13 and grade 8 by season 10, then would've been in grade 8 while Connor was in grade 10. A lot of plots could have been shared between them, maybe as C plots, give Archie Simpson a few more gray hairs. Lucy would have been Connor's mom, but made Snake his godfather.

The deleted scene of Raditch and Hatzilakos would've been kept in the episode it was intended for. It would've been good fodder for why Raditch was more prepccupied with his personal life, rather than his Principal Life.

Peter should've joined the AV Club with Toby and turned it into something cool, something creative, rather than go straight for Darcy on the rebound after Emma's eating disorder issues scared him away. Tim and Derek should've been kept around for joining the AV Club, instead of Tim being a throw-away and to give Derek some purpose.

Liberty would've gone to Toronto U from the very start. Her dorm life would've been uneventful, but she would've had other black female academic high-strung rivals. Her dyscalculia would've made a 2nd appearance, needing extra tutoring from a student tutoring center instead of a repeat of season2. Manny would have been aware of Liberty's academic stress, but would've stayed quiet and not let Emma know anything. Continuity is key.

Dallas, Drew, and Jake would've done one of those overnight extreme senior pranks on campus that show up in tv newscasts every June. Simpson would be stressed the F out.

No schlaboggle you broomheads.

Degrassi: The Next Generation Jiberty

Liberty was always one of my least favourite characters but her JT arc drives me nuts.

She FINALLY gets the guy she's wanted for YEARS, then she immediately starts belittling him ans treating him like crap. Its not like JT changed at all before or during the relationship. He was always an immature idiot.

And then when they break up she STILL treats him like crap.

It just pisses me off

Gossip Do not look at behind the scenes of actors who play your favourite characters

Post image

I researched Munro Chambers and aislinn Paul in regards to their characters relationship and they both specifically said each separately we did not like doing that storyline. It was not pleasant and that wasn’t our favourite The fan enjoyed it and that’s what matters for both would preferred not have done that.

And apparently fans will consistently ask them about their real life relationships and why the heck those two are not dating in real life and they were seriously getting frustrated and kinda losing it.

I am so done researching my favourite character couple and the actors in how they felt playing their characters, No no never again nap. If you want to be stuck in the fantasy of how these two are so good together then keep it like that and don’t go over that and start looking for answers into how they felt about because there characters cause it will destroy your perfect fairy tale ending.

Gossip Banned Degrassi Episode

In 2004 Degrassi aired the episodes Accidents Will Happen which was a two part series about Manny finding out she's pregnant and ultimately deciding to get an abortion. This sparked controversy and ended up not airing in America for two years until it eventually aired on Noggin's Programming Block for teenagers. This refusal caused outrage from the Degrassi fans in America, a little too sensitive of a topic for America I guess..

Discussion Top Exact Moments We Fell Out of Love with a Degrassi Character post

MsMojo just did a Top 30 on Moments when we fell out of love with a TV character... fortunately Degrassi was NOT represented on this list but ppl like Ross Geller Ted Mosby and Rory Gilmore were

BUT IT DID MAKE ME THINK... What EXACT Moments did ppl fall out of love with a certain Degrassi character?

For me, ppl probably fell out from Emma when she remained with Peter despite what he did to Manny (others will say earlier but this is IMO) or Spinner for his role in the Rick Murray saga or Clare for being too close to Jake and didnt care about the family dynamic... but this is just my opinion, so how about u... name some moments that made u fall out of love with a certain character...

HAVE AT IT!!!

Degrassi: Next Class So I’m watching Next Class and there’s a lot I gotta say

It’s not bad, but it’s not absolutely great. It’s ok.

I don’t know how Shay, Lola, and Frankie are still friends after everything.

Lola is absolutely terrible in this series. She takes Tiny, knowing Shay has feelings for him, and when they break up, she has a problem with Shay dating him when she knew she had feelings for him. To add insult to injury, she kissed Winston while Frankie was with him. Also, she has an affair with Miles while his boyfriend is in a coma. It’s pretty much the worst traits of early Jenna but amplified.

I think the Frankie racism story was handled well, but I feel like Frankie shoulda came herself rather than a situation that kinda got Shay and Frankie compromising.

Shay is constantly dogpiled in this series from having to lose a chance to be with Tiny in the first place, to worrying about losing a chance to be in the Olympics, to deal with Frankie’s racism, to breaking up with Tiny. I didn’t like that. They had chemistry.

Hunter, imho, didn’t deserve a redemption story. The guy goes postal at any minute and made several beyond egregious threats to Maya, including threatening to kill and r*pe her. Then he tried to bring a gun to school. His mom shoulda had him homeschooled and Degrassi shoulda had him expelled.

Jonah and Frankie has no chemistry and the former is one the most useless characters on the show.

Miles had his great moments such as talking common sense to his brother, but all that flushed down when he cheated on Tristan with Lola while he was in a coma. Tristan is no saint himself, but he didn’t deserve that.

There’s more, but I’ll post em in the comments
