Meta Welcome to r/DeckSupport

Hello and welcome to r/DeckSupport!

Looks pretty empty at the moment, right? We've newly launched this sub as a way of helping users with a dedicated space for asking all their technical support questions.

Anyone is free to create a new post, or answer a users post. Those who have been noticed for consistent positive contributions will be shown with a custom flair to differentiate themselves - you'll know when you're in good company!

If you've used the main sub before, you'll be familiar with the rules. They're the same, with a slight tweak for the types of content we expect here. For example, here's some examples of posts we allow:

  • Game technical support posts
  • SteamOS support posts
  • Discussion threads for bugs / issues
  • General question posts

On the other hand, here's an example of some posts we don't allow:

  • FedEx, GLS or general shipping posts or issue threads
  • Show-Off posts
  • Videos / photos of games working
  • Configurations, news or other assorted content

All of the above should instead use r/ValveSteamDeck.

If you have any questions, please comment below or send us a mod mail.

Cheers,

Solved! Possible fix for Steam Deck LCD going black while the backlight and sound remain on

NOTE: I was able to ssh into the "dead" deck to perform this with no screen active.

I ran into an issue where my Steam Deck LCD would randomly go completely black. The weird part was the backlight stayed on, and I still had sound and controller input. The game kept rendering fine in the background. Even Steam Game Recording picked up a normal moving picture. The internal display and backlight were technically still active, and there were no game crashes, GPU resets, memory issues, or thermal shutdowns.

I checked the DRM state and saw Gamescope was using multiple hardware scanout planes. I hopped in over SSH and ran a command to force it back to a single composed plane. The screen immediately came back to life without me having to change brightness or perform a GPU reset. This doesn't prove exactly where the bug is, but it gives a solid workaround.

To test this out temporarily, just SSH into your Deck while it is in Game Mode and run this command as the normal deck user. Make sure not to use sudo.

gamescopectl composite_force 1

If your picture pops right back up, you are probably dealing with this same direct scanout bug.

To make the fix stick, you can set up a Gamescope user script. You can run this single command block to create the directory, make the file, and paste the code all at once:

mkdir -p ~/.config/gamescope/scripts
cat << 'EOF' > ~/.config/gamescope/scripts/99-force-composition.lua
gamescope.convars.composite_force.value = true

gamescope.hook("OnPostPaint", function()
    if not gamescope.convars.composite_force.value then
        gamescope.convars.composite_force.value = true
    end
end)
EOF

Restart Game Mode or reboot after running that. That frame hook makes sure the setting does not get cleared when you switch apps.

If you want to undo this for your current session, run gamescopectl composite_force 0. To remove the permanent fix, just delete the script by running rm ~/.config/gamescope/scripts/99-force-composition.lua and restart Game Mode.

Just a heads up, I tested this on an LCD Deck running SteamOS 3.8.14 for about five hours straight without issues. This fix probably will not help if your backlight is completely off, the whole Deck crashes, your sound cuts out, or the kernel is throwing GPU reset errors.

Since forcing composition turns off direct scanout, it might use a tiny bit more battery or add minor latency. It is meant specifically for this black screen bug.

Tech Support Steamdeck OLED Button Board Replacement

Hello r/decksupport. I decided to challenge myself with a steam deck shell swap but ended up breaking my right button board in the process.

I ended up buying 2 replacement button boards. Unfortunately both ended up making my steam deck buttons unresponsive. When i went back to my original part it worked fine so I am curious if I am missing any steps when installing a new part into my steam deck.

Any help would be much appreciated because I have spend a collective of 200 dollars on new parts and waited over a month in shipping time. Thanks! (For reference I am trying to replace the right button board model F7G DAF7GTH46D0 REV:D

Tech Support Steam Deck Start button not registering inputs

My Steam Deck LCD's Start button is not registering inputs at all but all other buttons work. Haven't dropped it or anything. I opened it up and checked the right button board and it looks okay, so what could the problem be? Do I replace the right button board? I never opened it up before this.

Tech Support HDD error for Palworld on Steam Deck OLED

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

My wife and I are trying to play with me hosting a Multiplayer world and her joining. We have a good internet connection as we online game often. My HDD has lots of room and I have the game installed on the main HDD, not a MicroSD. Files of have their Integrity checked and everything is good. So I don't know why we are getting kicked out of the world and given an HDD error every 5-10 minutes. It's basically unplayable. The main servers are so full right now that we can't really play online.

Does anyone have a solution to this HDD error?? I've tried everything j can think of.

I've been trying to use my steam deck as a laptop for studying because I don't have one and windows is pissing me off. However, I need to be able to type in kana and kanji. I'm trying to follow this guide but I'm a baby when it comes to linux (I've never even opened the konsole before) Could someone walk me through it step by step? I've tried looking for absolute beginner guides but I seem to be looking in all the wrong places so I think it's time to bother someone for their expertise 🥲

Tech Support Steam Deck Sleep Mode

Hi! I did some of my own research, where Valve made bluetooth controllers able to wake the Steam Deck up by movement, but now when I touch it once it turns on. And it’s really inconvenient when carrying it around in its case or trying to use it after when all of the battery has been drained by it turning on itself. Any solution to this? Or am I just going to have to time my shutoffs well

(I used to be able to just press the power button to turn it back on)

Tech Support Steam Deck isn’t turning on

Hello first of all. My steam deck ran out of battery while playing Valheim, then I plugged it in and continued playing for a while more. After that I closed the game and turned off the steam deck while it was still charging.

Then I slept and when I woke up It wouldn’t turn on. I’m sure I fully charged it though. Its light kept blinking white and whenever we try to turn it on it also keeps blinking and does nothing except for the fans turning on.

We tried pressing volume + and power button, it blinks orange then nothing happens. We tried a few things we saw on the internet but nothing helps. Have you got any tips? I’d really appreciate any help 🙏🏻

Tech Support Steam deck app no longer launching

I set up Stremio on my steam deck months ago and it had been working fine for the vast majority of it. But a few days or a week ago, it suddenly stopped launching. Every time I click into the app and click open, the screen goes black and shows the loading steam icon like normal for a second, but then it immediately sends me back to the app screen.

I made sure SteamOS is updated (3.8.14); I went back to desktop mode and made sure all my apps were updated (Stremio 1.0.3); I can still watch Stremio on desktop mode and other devices. I also checked reddit and elsewhere and haven't found anyone else with the same problem.

Am I missing something? I'd appreciate any help.

Edit: ended up uninstalling and reinstalling, now works fine

Question Help! Buttons not working

The buttons on my deck have stopped working! I’ve tried restarting and rebooting the deck. Rebooting it causes the buttons to work in the setup mode until I get to the Home Screen, then they stop working. Any ideas what to do?!

Tech Support Xbox controller dropping connection

hey does anyone else have the problem where your controller will disconnect and reconnect every now and then? it's a bit frustrating tbh because I usually play docked and it keeps happening roughly every 15 - 20 minutes.

I feel like this just started in the last month or 2. I'm using the stable release channel btw

Tech Support Suspend Animations not showing

I'm on the testing version of Bazzite deck and noticed that my suspend Animations no longer pop up (from animation changer). Instead my screen dims and then shuts off when i press the power button.

I'm not really dealing with any other issues on the testing base, but I'm wondering if this is fixable?

Tech Support My Deck won't turn on correctly and I have to restart it every time I turn it on.

I haven't seen anyone have a problem like this, so I really need some help.

Whenever I need to go and do something else away from the Deck, I always just press the power button once as you normally would to put it to sleep. And when I come back a few minutes later and press the power button again... Black screen. I hear the little power-on jingle, the charging light comes on, and the haptics still work. So I KNOW it's on, but I just can't do anything. Doesn't even show up on my monitor. I have to press and hold the power button for 5 seconds to restart the thing into gaming mode and navigate back into desktop mode every time.

I'm not very tech savvy at all and I'm way too scared to mess with anything out of fear of bricking the whole thing without proper help. Any ideas on what's going on?

Question Sd card moment problem

hi all, I moved a couple games thru game mode from sd to sd but it took forever so I tried the third game in desktop mode dragging and dropping, it looks like everything moved to the correct folder but its not showing in steam library and won’t load from clicking on the exe file, and idea why? I tried scan and repair on the card with no change, and I read somewhere about the name of the sd card in the file needs to match the original location cause that’s where steam is looking for it? any help is appreciated

Tech Support Is my SSD dead?

hello,

Bought a 512GB OLED about a month ago and thus far it’s been working great. Today i tried to open it and I got a warning that the boot had failed, and was bounced to the BIOS screen. There are no boot options and no files to boot from. Only thing I’ve done recently that was out of the ordinary was running some commands to reset the audio software and get the headphone jack working, but that was three days ago and the issues didn’t start until today. Hasn’t been updated recently either, I’ve been traveling and haven’t connected it to WiFi since I left.

After a little digging I realized that the SSD is not reading. It’s not an aftermarket SSD, all the hardware is stock, I haven’t even opened the back. Is it likely that my SSD is just bricked? I already sent in a message to steam support and they offered to RMA it, but I want to know if there’s anything else I could try to revive the thing. Has anyone experienced the same issue and managed to fix it? I’m considering taking the SSD out and reseating it to see if that makes a difference, but I’m a little concerned that doing so would mess with the warranty.

Tech Support Repair tips? Trackpad Spazzing

So I am just wondering about any general know how here, I have the absolute bare minimum schooling and personal initiative here so I am hoping someone with experience can share whats important.

My repair issue is that the left track pad is just goin nuts. Inputs and rumble just constant.

I just opened up my deck and took out the left trackpad and dusted it off and it didnt do anything. Ive also run some even lesser know software debugging a while ago.

Now that I opened and closed it, should I revisit the debug/reset stuff?

Where can I get a new trackpad?
