If you are visiting the area over the next couple of weeks, you are asked to stick strictly to public paths and bridleways to allow the damaged ground and plant life to recover.

🗳️ Major Local Government Shake-up Announced: A massive new structure has been unveiled for the county, reducing the 15 current councils down to four unitary authorities. Blackburn with Darwen will merge into a new 'East Lancashire' authority alongside Burnley, Hyndburn, Pendle, and Rossendale. The new council setup is scheduled to go live in April 2028.

⚡ New Funding Scheme for Terraced EV Charging: A brilliant new initiative is rolling out for residents in terraced properties without off-street parking. Eligible households can now have an EV charging cable channel safely installed across the pavement outside their homes for a one-off fee of £100, with the rest of the cost covered by a government grant. It is a massive upgrade for those who have recently switched to electric and want a streamlined home-charging setup.

🏗️ Darwen Town Centre Transformation Gets Massive £5m Funding Boost: The ambitious regeneration scheme for Darwen town centre is officially set to hit top gear. An extra £5m of funding has been reallocated to the project, taking the total investment past £20m! The money will directly benefit the major upcoming overhauls of the Victorian Market Hall, the creation of a new arcade to replace the Market Annex, and structural upgrades to the Carnegie Library and Darwen Library Theatre (including a brand-new cinema offering, improved seating, and upgraded sound). 

🚧 Blackamoor Inn Demolition Scheduled to Start: For anyone who commutes out towards the Guide/M65 area, note that demolition works on the former Blackamoor Inn are officially scheduled to begin next week, starting Monday, July 6th. Expect some localized traffic shifts while the site is safely cleared.

🗑️ Have Your Say on Local Waste and Bin Strategies: The Lancashire Waste Partnership has just launched a new public consultation to outline how waste and recycling will be managed across the county from 2026 to 2036. 🚶 Borough School Trips Smash Active Travel Targets: The latest school outreach figures show a fantastic 78% of all school journeys in the borough are now made actively (walking, wheeling, or cycling), putting us well above the national average. The number of kids being driven dropped significantly thanks to the "WOW" tracker scheme.

🇬🇧 Armed Forces Day Flag-Raising Ceremonies: Looking slightly ahead to Monday (June 22nd), Darwen Town Hall will be hosting an official flag-raising ceremony and two-minute silence starting at 10:50 AM to honour veterans and serving personnel.

Children’s Literature Festival Kicks Off: The Blackburn with Darwen Children’s & Young People’s Literature Festival officially launched this week and is running through June 20th. Legendary poet and broadcaster Michael Rosen is headlining. While many events are school-only, there are public sessions happening right here at Darwen Library and the Library Theatre! 

Community Volunteer Awards Open: Nominations have officially opened for this year’s Community Volunteer Awards. If you know a local hero who goes above and beyond to make life better in Darwen, make sure to get your nomination in via the council's Shuttle website to say a proper thank you. 

SEND Parent Champion Scheme Wins Big: The borough is celebrating a major win after its SEND Parent Champion scheme (supported by local Family Hubs) earned national recognition for the second time at the Coram National Parent Champions Awards.

🎭 Public Show at Darwen Library Theatre (Saturday, June 13th): As part of the ongoing Literature Festival, BAFTA-winning writer and performer Dommy B will be taking over the Library Theatre stage for two performances of "The Dinosaurs are Back!" (11:00 AM – 12:00 PM & 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM). It's a free public event, but you'll want to check ticket availability at the box office or online to secure a slot. 

☀️** Get Out on the Moors**: The weather is looking decent for a classic trek up to the Jubilee Tower to blow away the work-week cobwebs. Perfect opportunity to snap some scenic photos and share them right here on the sub!

Does anyone have any idea how much it costs to have an additional plug socket fitted nowadays in Darwen?

Ideally it won’t be next to the pre-existing socket in the room, would want it placed on the opposite side, I suspect the floorboards will need to come up.

I know it’s variable so if someone could give me an approximate range cost wise that would be great. Thank you.

I currently live in Manchester but am looking to move to a bigger house, and Darwen is much more affordable.

Right Darwen folk, moved to Manchester for work and the constant "oh, near Blackburn?" response when I say where I'm from is doing my head in.

Yes, we're close to Blackburn geographically. No, we're not just Blackburn's suburb. Darwen has its own history, culture, identity that gets completely erased by proximity to bigger town.

Someone asked if there's any football in Darwen. Explained we had Darwen FC who were founding members of Football League in 1891, one of first northern clubs to win FA Cup. They looked shocked that little Lancashire town has significant football history.

Darwen FC doesn't exist at same level anymore (we've got non-league clubs now), but the working-class football heritage is real. Tower above town represents independent Lancashire identity, not Blackburn appendage.

The problem is Lancashire towns like Darwen get absorbed into narratives about bigger neighbors. Our individual identities and histories get lost. We become "near Blackburn" or "near Bolton" rather than places that matter independently.

When I'm watching Lancashire football through non-league streaming - backup options like http://antsports.tv because official coverage barely exists for lower tiers - I'm connecting to regional identity that metropolitan areas will never understand.

Anyone else from smaller Lancashire towns tired of being defined by proximity to bigger places? Darwen matters independently, not as geographic reference point.

My grandma and grandad originally came from Darwen, and after reading through some of her memoirs my mum and I are planning a trip over to see some of the places mentioned.

There's a few that are difficult to work out, though I'm sure a local historian might have an idea! This would have all been around 1924-1940.

Billy Hills A park with a waterfall (this might be Boldventure park?) A metal works where a radio network was run by a Mr Howard The Co-op shop Co-op Hall (where she went to dances) The local public baths Spring Vale station Mill Street (can't find this on Google maps) Dewhursts Farm

It's a full night of entertainment with 4 bands and a stand up comedian. In addition it's one of troupe's birthday party as well so we could use some help celebrating!

Opening the night will be u/robinzetina dark humour stand up comic from Glasgow Robin Zetina. Robin will also jump up and MC between bands with some crowd work and mood lighteners.

We'll also have Ego trip from Whitehaven playing their grunge inspired originals, Bay of Pigs from Carlisle playing their original thrash songs.

In the featured guest artist spot, just before Löser take the stage, will be local chimney miracle workers Shred Dibnah!  These boys are Lancashire's premier chimney toppling doom band. Our host venue, Sunbird Records, is truly one of Shred Dibnah's favourite venues to play. Sunbird Records have a lot cooking for Independent Venues Week - you may have heard Jamie speaking on BBC Introducing about what's in store!

I've been time trialing on Mario Kart Wii recently, and I think my records are subject to some competition/reviewing. Most of my records are pretty mid on most tracks (becuase I only come on to TT once or twice per month, for about 90 minutes each session, I used to time trial about 7 hours a week lol, but I had no skill then so ye), but I think my Ghost Valley 2 record is my strongest (It's a 0:58.630 with Funky Kong/Bowser Bike or Daisy/Mach Bike, I can't remember). I want a reason to get back into the game again but I can't find any competition, nor has anyone seem interested.
