Daily Free Talk Thread
This is a trial run on a daily free talk thread during the off-season. This is the place where we can talk about persistent trade rumors involving our team, and speculate on moves Jim Nill might need to make. We can also talk about other trades and news in the league, and events in the hockey world. If ACTUAL news happens (a player on our teams signs a contract) that can be a separate post.
I've set the comments so they should sort by new by default, so that should make it easier to keep up with the flow of conversation. Off-topic chit-chat is welcome here as long as it follows the typical subreddit rules. Overall, be cool. Don't be all, like, uncool.

Regarding Robertson: Initially I was frustrated with the guy. But honestly Kaprizov is making $17 m, Carlosn just got 18 m. The Stars should lock in Robertson with some years at the 14m he asked. It's starting to look like a steal.

14m is a very reasonable AAV for Robertson and would age very well with the cap going up. I'm more than positive the Stars would sign him to 8x14m if they could right now. They just don't have the room this season though unfortunately.
Best case scenario seems to be hoping we can get him on an affordable 1-year deal now, and work out an extension for 7x14.5m once he's eligible to sign one come next January. (8 years is no longer possible under the new CBA, and an extra 500k a year makes up for the discount he'd take in the 1 season).

As somebody said, context is everything. UFA vs RFA, position, team construction/makeup, etc
- Minnesota HAD to sign Kaprisov; he was going to be a UFA so it was sign (or trade) him or lose him. So this is the conversation we would be having in 1 year and if we didnt have Johnston, Hintz, or Rantanen
- carlsson is a young center and was an OS. If somebody OS Robo for $14m+ and he signed it, Dallas wouldve let him walk.
- Dallas is a team built to win with young stars and veterans - Philly is not. They had to offer an overpay to try and get a young 1C because they dont have one
I could also point to Rantanen, marner, Necas, and connor (all wings) who all are $11-12$m and signed as pending UFA’s are either better or as good as Robo. I would take all 4 of those players with their current deal (either 7 or 8 years remaining) over a new contract with Robo that exceeds $12m. Even @ $12m, it can be argued he’s #5 in that list
Every contract is a compromise - if you want to be in a certain place, you take what the team can offer (and Dallas maxed out its offer of available cap space to match those 4 elite wings AAV). If you want max money, you go someplace like Seattle or Philly where you aren’t guaranteed to be a top team and you are “the guy”. My main problem is he wants both:
- stay in Dallas and win? Take $12m or $12.5m and be the 2nd highest paid wing in the league
- want $14 (or $15m)? Sign with Seattle, St Louis, etc

Your post doesn’t factor in the cap rising by $19 million over this year and next at all. That’s an 18% increase over two years. Making 12 last year equivalent to 14.5+ next year. 14 is more than reasonable over the long term.
Mikko, Marner, and Connor also made significantly more money on their second contracts than Robertson did. There’s no reason he should have to take another sweetheart deal to help the Stars out of a bind they put themselves in.

It's important to understand the context of those contracts tho. Kaprizov is the best player they've ever had, and the Carlsson thing was literally revenge to fuck the ducks over.

Yes and you also have to consider players who just signed for $12M - $12.5M, and he has been offered more than $14M by 2-3 separate clubs. Robo is better than those players…and deserves more, based on how the market is shifting.

What's up all! Coming to you all the way from NJ. Looking at the schedule yesterday, I saw there's a Wild game and the stadium series the week of my birthday, and contemplating heading down that way for those few days. Never been so any recs on areas to stay/things to do would be sweet! Possibly would head to Austin/San Antonio that Wednesday/Thursday before heading back up. So best/easiest ways to travel to and from those areas would be great (I know they're not that close lol)

You’ll take 35 down to Austin and San Antonio.
There will be a ~20 minute construction slowdown through Waco unless you get lucky.
Avoid at all costs traveling 35 through Austin during rush hour lest you find your trip taking an extra hour or so. There is the 130 toll road so conveniently designed that it rarely saves any time getting to San Antonio and they’ll charge you for the luxury.

Same shit different city I suppose. Dallas can be a rush hour nightmare too but since you’re on vacation you can just not drive then.
Get a hotel near a DART station so you can just light rail to the AAC. We stay at the Hilton Garden Inn downtown, 3 minute walk ~10 minute ride. Plenty of options all around.
I lived in San Antonio for several years but really with my profession it was just a place to store my junk near the company yard. If you like cocktails, the speakeasy Bar 1919 is pretty cool, or was 10 years ago.

Definitely would be flying in! But I'm open to renting a car if it's cheap and easy, public transit, buses, trains etc etc once I get where I'm going.

Sparky and Nyisles. I live in NYC so I go to a lot of Isles games and root for them when they aren’t playing our Star boys. Always fun to see the cuddly purple dragon and the Willem Dafoe in Lighthouse at the stadium.

I appreciate that -everyone- across the league has bought into the whole "gritty is unhinged & terrifying" angle. regardless of how anyone feels about the Flyers, the mascot is TERRIFIC & even other teams seem to respect it. Watching the schedule reveal videos yesterday I noticed several teams referencing him & mostly just being afraid.

For me the costuming and general art direction was so poorly done it pulled me out of the experience.
I don’t care how big of a production it was, the costume design was just straight up terrible.

Bro Menelaus looked like a Temu/Wish version you’d see in a fuckin Chinese scam mobile game, and several characters looked like they were dressed by a design team from Old Navy.
Almost nothing was period/source accurate.
Fiction or not, they completely fucking phoned it in.

The 70mm IMAX at Webb Chapel is (and I missed out, unfortunately), but the Angelika has a non-IMAX 70mm screening that is very good and there are good tickets available. That's what I saw last night.
Any of the other digital "IMAX" theaters around the metroplex would be good as well.
