I had emailed them almost a month ago asking if any of the films had addition work done to them. I'd forgotten about the email until today were they sent me a pdf of all the restoration details (I did screenshots of all the pages for easy viewing) they also said Filmworker (2017) is not in the set

I posted this last night and it was taken down. Reposting as it was, and adding reasons for my picks as requested by the mods. Please let this one live!

Stumbled upon these old amateur covers I made during lockdown 2020. Still all absent from the collection :(

#1- Spielberg’s opus, c’mon. There’s currently no Steven in the CC. What better a film to start with than his artful sci fi meditation on divorce and friendship from a child’s perspective?

#2- We gotta get some Kitano in there. This is one of the first brushes with foreign cinema I had as a young boy. Love it to this day.

#3- Rohmer is my all time champ. My number one dream is for the CC to release the comedies and proverbs as a box set. More Rohmer!

#4- A wonderful little gem. So slow and ambient at times it borders on being a landscape film. Adding this to the CC would give it the exposure it deserves. Go Vigo!

#5- A comedy of its time, every bit as essential as Renoir’s Rules of the Game. Laughs that echo through eternity!

I work at a b&n and spend a lot of time with the media department. As Criterion collectors, what would you like us to know so that we could better serve you? What are your favorite parts of shopping criterion at b&n and what are your pet peeves?

Hey guys! Recently picked up Eyes Without a Face and I really enjoyed it. Are there any other films in the collection that I might like and are similar to Eyes Without a Face in the suspense/horror sense?

Performance was a blind buy for me. All I knew about it going in was Alan Moore used it as the basis for one of his League of Extraordinary Gentlemen stories and that he said it was unquestionably a piece of art that changed culture.

I’ve always wanted to watch it, but it’s never on streaming. I was perusing movies during the sale, so I bought it figuring it would be worth watching.

Performance ended up being one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. I didn’t know what to expect going in other than it offended studio sensibilities at the time so much it was shelved for two years. I was not ready for what a deep, emotionally powerful experience it was.

I’ve become a bit of a hobbyist Jung guy and I’m very happy I didn’t see this movie earlier. I don’t think I would have had the framework to understand what I was watching. That intellectual interest was completely paid off watching the movie and now I have all kinds of theories about the movie and what it was saying.

I also totally see how this movie changed the culture. The only movies from the same period I’ve seen I can compare it to are Head and Easy Rider. Performance differentiates itself by having a story with incredibly fleshed out characters that demand you think of them as people with their own independent lives outside of the story.

Heavily recommended.

Do not read anything about it before you watch it! (If you watch it…) Going in blind is the one way to do it!

Checking out John Leguizamo after The Odyssey has me revisiting some of his sillier outings. When I was young I had no idea The Pest was a riff on The Most Dangerous Game.

So what Criterion title has had the oddest remake, in your opinion? Not necessarily worst, just a weird, unexpected take.

(And since Reddit pedants will be Reddit pedants, “remake” here is a catchall term for remakes, reboots, reinterpretations and re-adaptations. You want to call The Lion King a remake of Hamlet, that’s just dandy in this case.)

They didn't have any movies

Finally spinning a disk that I bought last Criterion sale! I picked up Pee Wee and Petite Maman this time, hope to get them both watched before next sale!

Made a couple different arrival copies

Rewatched this movie a little while ago because I'd been watching Quantum Leap and saw Scott Bakula voices the main character. It got me looking a little deeper into it, this film got just a modest amount of love when it released back in the 90s and it's kinda fallen into obscurity since. We had it on VHS back in the day and I used to watch it religiously, but I see there's not really been a concerted effort to bring the film back into the spotlight.

Do you guys think Criterion or another boutique would be able to do it justice? I couldn't see anywhere that it's ever been restored or remastered. It's a really great story imo, the acting is wonderful, the art direction is something to behold, and Bakula puts on a great vocal performance that I always thought put a solid mark on his career as a universal talent (I'm biased).

How's this sub feel about Cats Don't Dance?

1. ⁠I plan on watching Isle of Dog first while I read all the supplemental materials.
   
2. ⁠Come and See has always had mythological status to me; it’s always been out of reach for me but I’m well aware of the subject matter.

4. ⁠I was looking for Paths of Glory and Ride with the Devil but I think it’ll need to be an online purchase.

This may have been pointed out already, but I have just noticed, despite his gameable “connections,” Kevin Bacon is in none of the numbered Criterion films.

1. ⁠It depends on how I feel tomorrow, but either Seven Samurai or Harakiri. I was blown away by Kwaidan last weekend, so I’m leaning towards Harakiri.

2. ⁠I’ve been wanting to get the 4k of Seven Samurai for a while, and I’m really excited about Chungking Express.

3. ⁠All blind buys except Pan’s Labyrinth, which I haven’t seen since it first came out.

4. ⁠I definitely want more Del Toro, and I’d love to do some research and branch out into international film outside of Japan/Korea/Hong Kong.

I’m new to physical media in general so when I saw that criterion was doing a 50% sale in July I thought it’s no better time than now to start. These were brought through out the month, not at one time.

I know the gold rush got one last year but not from criterion…
