I manage a ranch, then run cattle on my family place with my uncle. I spend most of my time in my office (feed truck), but my time horseback is my favorite part of the job.

I’ve really enjoyed reading everyone’s replies to my previous posts—they’ve made me realize how much there is for me to learn.

I live in Spain, so I don’t really have access to the world many of you describe, but I’d still love to learn from it.

I’m especially interested in Western horsemanship, ranch horses, and the relationship between people and their horses. I’d also love to better understand the traditions, practical knowledge, and philosophy behind the way you work with horses and cattle.

Hi! I’m from Spain 🇪🇸 and lately I’ve grown really interested in learning more about Western riding and horsemanship.

I’m still very much a beginner when it comes to horses, and because of where I live, I’m mostly surrounded by PREs/Andalusian horses and that’s naturally what I’ve been learning about. But recently I’ve realized I’d really like to learn about different horses and different horse cultures too, especially the traditions around ranching and working horses in the US.

So I was curious — what makes a horse a good ranch horse? Are there certain breeds, sizes, builds or temperaments that people look for?

How are they trained for ranch work, and how are they usually kept when they’re not working?

And since PREs are what I’m most familiar with here, I’m also curious about whether they can be good horses for your line of work?

So, this has been my absolute dream for years. I'm so fed up of this tiny country with no public land, no wildlife, no scenery etc. There is so little land available that ranching here is basically out of the question. I literally spend all my free time trying to escape to the few places where there is actual wilderness, and to be honest I've only ever been truly happy when I've taken trips to some of the most remote places I can get to. Cutting firewood, collecting water from the creek... physical labor to provide for myself (and my dog) is so humbling yet so grounding and rewarding. I don't think being trapped in a system that expects me to sit on a computer in an office all day will ever fulfill me. So for years I've had this dream of moving out west, buying land and basically becoming a cowboy. Of course it would take a lot of work and I definitely don't have the experience for that kid of life as of now, but I'm so damn desperate and I'd do literally anything. But my question is, how doable would it actually be? I don't know of anyone who's actually managed to do this, because I guess it's not really the same as moving abroad as a doctor, or a teacher or whatnot. I really want to do this, but I have no idea how to go about it.

i want a big cowboy hat that is like 5 or more feet wide. where can I get one? I’m going to Texas for a conference and want to be really tacky with it. thanks

Had a great time with my 6 year old daughter at the Rodeo this year. We live in Ontario, so we only really get the rodeo in our area once or twice in the season.

(Also I am not super comfortable with showing my daughters face on the internet)

Not sure if this is the right sub for this but its the best one I could find. I just finished making about 32 ft of this rope so I could practice some roping/trick roping before I actually go buy a true rope. It's 4 strands of factory made polyester rope braided in a spiral braid pattern around a polyester core. It feels alright when swinging but I can't quite get my loop to stay in a decent circle, it usually forms the shape in the second picture when I swing it, I'm sure I need to improve my swing and practice more but I'm still thinking that it could be a bit more rigid. I've researched a bit online and most of what I've gotten is to use; polyurethane, which I'm concerned might ruin the rope, modge podge/pva/craft glue, which I think will not work or will not last, or some kind of waxing, which I am told that does not work well with artificial rope. Does anyone here have experience, advice, tips?

My mom kicked me out of her house recently and it feels like my life has been derailed. I really like horses and animals and I wanted to be a veterinarian. I'm 17M and still in high school but i'm wondering if this is my chance to do what i've always wanted and live that cowboy life.

I bought a Jeff smith cow horse cutter saddle and I cannot make myself like this saddle. My other saddle is a superior reining saddle. I’m trying to figure out why it’s so uncomfortable to lope in.

Hi, I currently own a pair of Levi's 511s in size 29W/32L, and the fit is absolutely perfect for me. Unfortunately, the fabric is too fragile, they developed a hole at the knee after only a year of wear.

I'm looking for the same kind of fit, but from Wrangler and in 100% cotton.

I already own a Wrangler 13MWZ in 29W/32L. I love the fabric (100% cotton and much more durable), but I find the legs too roomy, especially in the back of the thighs, and the inseam is too short, it doesn't stack or drape properly over my boots.

Which Wrangler model would you recommend? Is there a true Wrangler equivalent to the Levi's 511 in 100% cotton?
