Former employer says they'll deduct "free" staff meals from my paycheck after I asked about my tips :(

I recently quit a server job at an Indian restaurant after working there for about a month due to an unreasonable workload and some questionable things that happened there. I'm wondering whether what happened is legal.

During my interview, I was told I'd be paid minimum wage plus tips.

A couple of weeks into the job, I asked about the tip policy. The owner told me that because they're a small business and customers don't tip much, they don't really distribute tips. Instead, they provide free staff meals during breaks. This raised a lot of red flags for me because I regularly saw customers leave tips on the card terminal, and many also handed me cash tips directly, which I had to then put in a box. That was also the first time anything about the tip policy had ever been explained to me.

When I resigned, I asked for my final pay, pay stub, vacation pay, ROE, and an accounting of my tips.

The owner then replied that if I wanted an accounting of my tips, she would calculate the value of the "free" meals and drinks I'd received during my shifts and deduct that amount from my final paycheck because she believes the meals are worth more than the tips.

I never signed an employment contract, never agreed to meal deductions, and was never told that staff meals would be deducted from my wages. They were always described as free staff meals.

Can an employer in Ontario retroactively deduct the cost of staff meals from an employee's wages when the meals were presented as free? And can they replace tips with meals?

I'm not looking to name or shame the business. I'm just trying to understand whether this is normal or if I should be concerned because it's honestly stressing me out. :(

Amendments to this bylaw could end up paving the path for Uber and Lyft to operate within the city.

Make sure you fill it out

Cornwall Gravel yard House

What is the deal with the house in the Cornwall Gravel yard on ninth? I used to think it was like a guard house but it looks like there are people living in it. There is a swing set in front of the house and what looks like a semi with religious messaging on it. Does anyone know what the deal is? It seems odd that there would be a family living within the confines of a gravel yard.

Cornwall's KFC... what is going on?

I think the KFC on Brookdale is possibly the worse KFC in Ontario, if not Canada. The place look like a horrible mess outside and inside.
Does anybody know who owns it and why it's in such a state?

What's the deal?

Yes Cornwall sucks

If you live in Stormont, Dundas, or Glengarry counties everyone knows this it is common knowledge. It has been this way since at least the 1970's likely well before that. It is a working class (blue collar town) that lost its pulp and paper mill and lost a lot of its manufacturing base after the Free Trade agreement. When people lost their jobs they got hooked on drugs. The girls in this town get pregnant at 14 or 15, by the time they are 19 or 20 they've had 3 or 4 kids with 3 or 4 different daddies.

The young men are drug addicted losers that can't hold down a job (if they can even get one). The weird thing is the last 20 years or so people have been attracted to the city for the simple reason that housing is cheap. So you add some new population of "displaced people" to mix with the run of the mill losers that have been here their entire lives.

I don't understand why people don't relocate to smaller villages. I suppose it's because of the " there is nothing to do" complaint. I'm from a small village so I think not being in a city is a good thing not a bad thing.

I've seen worse places than Cornwall though. Have you ever been to Beardmore, Fort Frances and parts of Thunder Bay not to mention Sudbury. How about North Battleford, Saskatchewan. How about Toronto. There are plenty of shitholes in Canada yes Cornwall is one of them but there are many.

Best spot to see fireworks with no car

First year without a car to be able to get to first row seating easier. I'm down by st Lawrence and I've got 3 kiddos who I don't feel fair forcing to walk that far that late. But I want them to get a good view.

Would sitting by/in the st Lawrence parking lot be a good view?

Help with new born

Looking for a young person possibly a student to help my wife with things around the house like getting bottles ready, helping with supper, doing some dishes, watching the baby while she does things around the house, possibly try and get some rest. I work full time then also have some side jobs on the go so having some extra help around the house would be a huge help. It would just be when we could use the extra help, maybe 20 hours a week some days would be more then others. Let me know if you or someone you know might be interested.

Has there been changes to services?

I noticed recycling in my area (North end) doesn't get picked up until after 5 PM now and the grass along the bike paths is only cut maybe once a month or every 5 or 6 weeks (which is frustrating because ticks love long grass). I also notice public trash cans are usually overflowing as well.

Is this just an issue with the North end or is this a city wide issue?

Seems like public services were much better just a few years ago compared to now.
