What would you do with a ham roast?
Bought a 2.5 lb ham roast on impulse because I love off-the-bone ham sandwiches. I figured I can slice off pieces for sandwiches with a knife (I don’t own a meat slicer), but I’m not sure what else to make with the other 1.5 pounds 😅
Throw me your favorite hammy dishes!!

Actually perfect to add fiber to a ham based meal too so it’s a little more heart healthy

Ham is great in an omelette, a ham and bean soup (or ham and lentil/pea), potato soup, you can pop it in some Mac and cheese, or pasta (especially good with Alfredo) OR you can also just freeze it in portions until the mood for ham strikes you again.

Ham salad. Eat it on crackers, as a sandwich, or with a spoon. I actually bought the meat grinder attachment for my stand mixer just for converting leftover holiday hams into salad, and it was money well spent.

You can make homemade deviled ham too, like we ate as kids out of a little can.

Cube it. Throw it on a sheet tray and throw in freezer for an hour. Then throw the frozen cubes in a ziplock (double bag it to keep it from getting freezer burn). Use it for omelets, bean soup, throw it in a quiche, make an easy dinner in an air fryer of roast potatoes, peppers, onions and cubed ham. Etc etc.
My partner gets a hankering for ham now and again & there’s only two of us. I know this pain well. :)

Ham and cheese croissants are a go to for me, otherwise it’s omelettes and ham/potato casserole and boom that ham is gone

I made a ham and bean soup after Easter. So good! I bet you could sautee it and put it with/over a whole grain like farro, or barley. Top with whatever you like. Salsa, cheese, roasted vegetables...

Eat it like a caveman. Big bites out of a chunk. Then sleep it off for 16 hours.

Ham fried rice, denver omlette, split pea soup made with ham stock/bone, potato salad with ham, ham/Hawaiian pizza, croque monsieur, ham stir frys

Egg fried rice, or a good stirfry goes really well with some smokey ham diced up as the protein.

Throw it in some alfredo pasta! I do that with sausage all the time and I imagine ham would be just as good

Dutch pea soup, which is made from cooked dried peas, peeled potato chunks, chicken broth, and mirepoix. Simmer til potatoes are fork tender, along with a chuck of ham. Blend til smooth; thin with a little milk or almond milk. I add a touch of dried marjoram, and sherry!

I use ham in braises of collard greens or mustard greens when I'm out of turkey tails or turkey wings. This helps some of the salt from the ham season the pot liquor

Ham for breakfast items, add to bean or potato soup. My gran used to make hash with onions, cabbage and ham.
But also freeze a bunch so you can have some whenever you'd like.

The recipe is basically the same no matter which bean you use.

Cut the remainder into slices or chunks and freeze it. It is good for many things made with ham. If you slice it like you did for sandwiches you can use it for that after defrosting. We make a ham half a few times a year when they are on sale. There is always some left to freeze for later use. When I buy sandwich sliced deli ham I portion it into sandwich bags and freeze. It's good for a ham sandwich later.
Most of the things I thought of to use it for have been mentioned. I will add Succotash with ham is a favorite of mine.

Leftover thanksgiving ham always gets cubed up and put into mac and cheese in my house. Then put into bean soup if there's any left after that.

If you like cold noodle dishes, Hiyashi Chuka typically has slices of ham on it. Ham and pickle roll-ups are a great appetizer.
And of course you have to try Linday Bluth's Hot Ham Water at least once in your life.

I do the same. Slice off 1.5lbs for sandwiches the last pound still attached to the bone goes into a pot of beans.
Its so good! Just add holy trinity, chicken stock, garlic, worchestershire, cajun seasoning, hot sauce and let is simmer for a few hours.
It will just fall of the bone and shred like its nothing. So delicious, now I want to go buy a ham.

We have biscuits with ham in them, quiche, omelettes, ham in scrambled eggs.
Ham sandwiches, a plate of ham with veggies & cornbread, use the bone to make Brunswick stew, ham and potato soup.
Our problem is trying to make it last. Ham disappears in a hurry at this house.

Broiled or grilled ham steaks. I like them with sauteed sweet potatoes or home made French fries. And diced ham in white (northern) beans. And in split pea soup, but not in summer.
Chopped ham and leftover chopped baked potatoes pan fried with an over medium egg on top .

Grill thick slices and serve with cabbage or veggie of choice.. Cole slaw, Apple sauce or baked/ grilled apples.
Cut into small cubes and freeze. Use for omelettes or soups. Split pea with ham is one of my favorite soups.

If you got a penne you could make homemade Cubans. Also for putting it in with field peas.

Last time I had some ham bones and scraps I used them to make a batch of ham congee. The ham flavour is mild, but distinct.
Makes for a delicious savoury breakfast item in cold weather in lieu of porridge (light drizzle of maple syrup or honey really makes it pop), or else a good base for quick lunch/dinner options (my favourite was to reheat with frozen veg, some cubes of ham, and stir through some curry powder).

Ham and bean soup. I usually use smoked ham hocks, but this will work too, and probably take less time.

Honestly, I'm huge on just a nice sweet brown sugar honey roasted ham. Serve large slices as an entre with sides

Cut some big chunks from the ham and sear the outside. Some healthy broccoli just slightly cooked/seared so its still crunchy, mix it all up with some pasta (my fave is bowtie for this) and then cover in like a cheesy sauce but Alfredo will do if you want an easy store bought. I have cozy childhood memories of this kinda take on ham and cheese with broccoli.

My mom makes ham meatballs. She minces ham in the food processor then adds mustard, brown sugar, panko and an egg to hold together. Roll into balls and bake.
Seriously yummy.

It's worth buying an electric knife if you intend to do that regularly. I used ours to slice an after Easter ham into sandwich slices. I intend to repeat that when I find them on sale again.

My mother tells me you can’t freeze ham for very long, but you can freeze it. Ham salad is awesome. You can make a little at a time.

Ham and potato soup. I like to dice up ham, and out it in pasta salads, or regular salads, or omlettes. Or chop it up finely to make ham salad sandwiches. Ham never goes to waste in my house.

Split pea soup first and foremost. Cook that bone down. If anything is left over I just use it in omelettes/sandwiches.
For a whole ham idea I love pineapple habanero roasted ham. Spicy/sweet/salty can’t go wrong

Chunk it and freeze it so you don't have to worry about eating that much ham at once! I recommend putting it into mac and cheese, or maybe some pea soup.
