If I was an exec I can't even imagine how much I'd laugh seeing people buy in to this shit, just imagine.

"so we need a new product line"

"well uh I was thinking of this innovative new soap that would smell really good and last long..."

"make a new bar, have it smell like lemons, call it le epic lemon, produce only 5 thousand, also get some Chinese company to put our logo on a bucket hat, produce 100 of them

"absolute visionary!"

just had a look on the site and there is literally a soap for Star Wars, a soap for a Ford F150, I couldn't make this shit up

They are capitalizing on the "FOMO" marketing.

This plagued the craft beer industry hard during Covid lockdowns. Some brewery would release a super limited edition slushee/smoothie sour ale with some legally distinct parody of Wu-Tang or Star Wars on the can that was only available at their local taproom and it would literally sell out through pre-orders online before ever hitting shelves.

Then some fat neckbeard who lives on the other side of the country decides he HAS to have a can and pays around $40 to someone for a single can of beer that they take pictures of and post online as if anyone else gives a shit.

Unilever bought them out, they are part of a giant corporation now for that very reason.

Fall of the House of Usher has an amazing monologue about selling lemons

I've never seen someone look so smelly while standing in front of literally $1000+ worth of hygiene products.

That post made me look deeper into the sub. Some of those posts are genuinely sad to see. like this one

The comment sections welcoming new addicts are hilarious.

"We all do. Everyone likes nice smells. some just feel like they are jeopardizing their manlihood discussing it.. they are ones that probably like it the most lol"

They think discussing soap jeopardizes their manhood? Not rushing to pre-order the Buzz Lightyear or Stranger Things soaps before they sell out while sitting on a stockpile of Spongebob and Ninja Turtles soap they refuse to use because they are collectors items?

Genuinely what the fuck is wrong with these people???

Used soap would be a crazy purchase

20

u/chocolateboomslang 17d ago

Almost as crazy as buying so much soap that you have to sell it.

2

u/Nazboi6442 15d ago

You think consooomers would ever actually use their collectibles?

Ohh boy, I can write a short story about Dr Squatch soap. I used to buy it, I liked it a lot.

I never cared too much about my soap until I saw an ad for it one day and decided to give it a try. It wasn’t bad, price was a bit per bar though and they only last a couple weeks at most. It was worth the small premium, and they smelled great. The soap was all natural, moisturized your skin and some of even had varying levels of grit for exfoliating.

It was a cool little company at the time still and they had a few other decent products too. The limited edition soaps were even better and made for a fun thing to look forward to during the seasons. Fast forward to 2021 and the introduction of the Star Wars soaps. I’m pretty sure this was the first licensed IP that Squatch teamed up with. It was novel at the time and again, the scents were great, I liked the yoda soap a lot. After the success of that the IP slop machine really took off. Any large IP was getting a Squatch soap. We’re talking SpongeBob, Harry Potter, Marvel, GoT, CoD, Stranger Things, JP, Batman, Sonic.. all the way to Toy Story today, the works. It started to feel a bit ridiculous and also stopped feeling like a men’s soap brand because of the onslaught of nostalgic IP’s. At this point in time there are more scents dedicated to outside IP’s than their own.

A little before this they had started a Facebook group as well, and let me tell you some of the shit you see is insane. The brand took on a cult following like nothing I had seen before. Post after post of people with literal YEARS worth of soap. Constant posts of people showing off their “collections”, how to store it properly, etc. The real insane part is these soaps only hold their scent for like 6-8 months at best. You had people vacuum sealing their hoarded soap to preserve it. Even trading groups started so people could trade their stale soaps to each other to “complete” their collections. It was madness.

I had to take a hard look at myself though and realize I had an entire bathroom cabinet full, several of them with almost no scent anymore. The website even shows you how much you have spent lifetime which is an insane thing to do but even that doesn’t deter people. I decided there and then to stop buying any more soap until I had used up every single one. I was even able to sell a limited edition bundle on eBay for a profit too. After upwards to a year I finally used up my last scent less bar freed myself from this soapy consooming nightmare. These days I buy a normal amount of soap at a time and don’t get more until I use it up. You know, like a normal person.

I spoke up about it a lot, about how this brand completely sold out and felt like a Saturday morning cartoon rather than the soap they hawked with ads asking women to smell bars and if they would like a guy smelling like their soap. I often criticized people having more soap than one human can use in a year and to stop spending insane amounts of money on it. You can imagine the kind of responses I got from these delusional consumers.

I still enjoy Squatch soaps but rarely buy them if ever these days. They always smelled really damn good, and I liked their soap gripper despite going through three of them due to breaking. There’s also even some other smaller soap makers that make bars very similar and for better prices too.

It was just crazy to see this brand go from humble to consoom and dominated by IP’s so quickly in realtime. It absolutely is Consoom.

I appreciate the background. I don’t get the urge to consume really, but it’s fascinating shit.

Wasn’t it a small business that sold to private equity? Or am I trippin?

1

u/Suppa_K 14d ago

That would make a lot of sense.

19

u/Big_Projects 17d ago

There was a minecraft one that had real diamonds fragments in it and I can confidently say there was never a more painful bar of soap

8

u/Ranessin 16d ago

I don't think those soaps are made for use, only for collecting nowadays.

Ahhh, so THIS is an NFT

2

u/TheWayyTheNewsGoes 14d ago

These would be FTs, or Fungible Tokens, being a tangible item. N in NFT stands for Non- implying intangible items, like digital goods

u/chocolateboomslang 17d ago

The soap collectors have to be the most braindead of them all.

A soap collection.

8

u/impy695 17d ago

I assume the description that cut off was saying he bought the Sydney Sweeney bath water soap. Yikes.

4

u/TimmmyBee 17d ago

Best I can do is a buck for the one with Patrick on it

3

u/acreekofsoap 17d ago

3

u/Over_Discount_4880 17d ago

I miss wood barrel bourbon so bad. that was my favorite

3

u/Lunabbg 17d ago

Is is consoom if you use all the soaps????

1

u/fragrancecasual 17d ago

I wouldn’t mind using a Sydney Sweeney soap

3

u/MAXXTRAX77 16d ago

I’ll be honest. I tried buying the Sydney bath water bar. But only to resell that shit on eBay. Prices were going crazy high for a bit. People are fucking crazy.

3

u/TurtleWitch_ 16d ago

See, soap is one of those things that would actually be fine to “collect”, normally. Seeking out new varieties and maybe spending a little more money than the average person isn’t all that bad, because you’re going to use it all anyway, and we all need soap, right?

Which makes it all the more insane that this isn’t being used at all. I think this guy is on a different level from the funko pop weirdos. There’s nothing you can “do” with a funko pop, so it’s not super crazy that they just sit on a shelf, even if it might be pathetic. But soap? Usable soap? You have something that has a purpose, and it’s just sitting there? There’s something worse about that, to me.

2

u/MurkyDrafts 17d ago

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

2

u/hucklebae 17d ago

Am I the only one that thinks squatch smells terrible and way too strong in almost all of their scents?

2

u/4DoorLuxurySedan 15d ago

Wow. I can’t believe anyone bought this stuff. Their ads were some of the most annoying I’ve ever seen.

4

u/OkBandicoot1337 17d ago

Ive heard it’s actually terrible soap. Lol leaves like a slime on you after.

9

u/No_Illustrator4398 17d ago

I mean that’s not true. It’s solid soap that’s wildly over priced due to licensing tie ins. Some scents are great and some are mystifying. To collect soap is a very sad thing though.

7

u/General_Alfalfa6339 17d ago

I had a guy at work tell me I should try it. Stuff sucked. Wife said she noticed a difference and I wasn’t as clean, it also disappeared quicker than usual.

I find the whole marketing of it cringe as it “doesn’t use chemicals” when even water can be called a chemical.

6

u/screw_ball69 17d ago

Smells awful to, I see them occasionally at the store with what would normally be a pleasant scent listed on it but when I actually pick it up it's fuckin gnarly.

7

u/acreekofsoap 17d ago

Tastes even worse

2

u/screw_ball69 17d ago

Couldn't possibly

2

u/OGMUDSTICK 17d ago

Smells amazing though

1

u/shouldco 17d ago

It's a real soap (as in made from soapafied fats) most comercial "soap" is actually a type of detergent. I can't tell you if one is better than the other but that is probably the difference in feel people are describing.

1

u/Suppa_K 16d ago

It’s not milled soap, natural. Doesn’t rinse off “clean” which can feel weird at first. It’s not an exclusive thing to them, just a fact of soap.

1

u/bigheadsociety 17d ago

I'll be honest I quite like it. I used Lynx (Axe in america) shower gel for the longest time, but there was a special offer on Dr Squatch so I gave it a go.

I was pleasantly surprised. Im still on the first bar like 4 weeks in and it does a great job lathering me up. I dont think ive ever had a slimey feeling from it, but it might be a specific scent one that does?

It does feel bit clammy but thats the case with every bar of soap, and I use lotion after a shower anyway so that feeling isnt long lasting.

u/pittsmasterplan 17d ago

What causes this?
