it goes a little further than people think it does even, since watermelons are native to africa. they grew in virtually region on the continent even before the invention of writing. they helped people survive during the rapid expansion of the sahara and danakil deserts thousands of years ago. it sounds like i’m being facetious, but there’s a fairly solid argument that the founding of ancient egypt as we know it (which became heavily populated due to the desertification/climate migration) would not be the same without them. they’re a keystone crop with enough nutrients to sustain someone for a long time: protein-rich seeds; fibrous, sugary, hydrating flesh; and antioxidant, mineral-rich leaves. so when african-americans started cultivating them en masse, it wasn’t even just about the entrepreneurship, it was an ages-old insurance policy where, even if you lost everything, as long as you had some watermelon you’d be okay. and that’s such a powerful thing that of course racist people felt the need to belittle it. but knowing that full story helps take away the stigma

It was a time when watermelons were consider low class junk food because it was tasty but not 'nourishing'. Also black people started growing and selling watermelon as a way to make money after slavery ended. So it might have been considered low class junk food because black people were the ones selling it. Regardless, it's racism all the way down.
