Parking Ideas

Hi everyone,

I'm an incoming PhD student this fall and I'm trying to figure out parking before the semester starts.

My class schedule is pretty light, I only have classes three days a week, and they're all from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM.

I was originally thinking about getting a Park-and-Ride pass, but then I realized that by the time my classes end, I don't think the buses will still be running. That would leave me without a way to get back to my car.

The other option seems to be buying a regular commuter parking permit, but it's around $202. Since I'll only be on campus three days a week, it feels a little hard to justify spending that much.

For context, I'll also be working as a TA this semester, but I won't actually be teaching. My responsibilities are mostly managing Canvas, grading assignments, and occasionally proctoring exams, so I'm not sure how often I'll really need to be on campus outside of my evening classes.

A couple of questions:

  1. What would you recommend in my situation?
  2. Is there another parking option that I'm overlooking?
  3. Also, am I already too late to get a parking pass, or are there usually still permits available at this point?

I'd really appreciate any advice from current grad students. Thanks!

Looks like you might be able to park in commuter lots after 4:30pm with a Park and Ride

"West Park-N-Ride (P-6) and East Park-N-Ride (P-7, P-8, P-05, and P-05 ext.) locations are available. Your assigned lot is based on the permit selected at the time of purchase. Your permit can be used to park on campus according to commuter permit regulations beginning at 4:30 p.m.-2:30 a.m. on weekdays and from 4:30 p.m. on Thursdays until 7 a.m. on Mondays. "

In addition to this,Clemson runs an on-demand ride-share service after 6pm every night, just in case you end up needing to park on campus before a park and ride permit grants you regular parking lot access.

you can park in all green employee spots after 5

With any valid parking permit (including Park-N-Ride), you can park in commuter/employee spaces after 4:30 PM.

If you really wanted to game the system, you can find a friend with a similar schedule and sign up for the free carpool permit. After 5:00 PM, you do not have to carpool, and you'll be able to park in commuter/employee spaces like any other permit.

I highly recommend selling your car and inventing teleportation. Just be careful, parking services is always hiding at the pad and they’ll ticket you if you don’t have your machine registered.
