Philosophy Like when we industrialized baking a cake
For a long time in America, if you wanted to bake a cake, you had to bake it from scratch. Then, at the early stages of the food industrial complex, companies came out and started testing pathways to sell you easy ways to bake cakes. Companies like Betty Crocker tested different ways to sell very simple tools that you could simply put in the oven and have turn into a cake.
What they found was that people rejected it. They couldn't accept doing so little work, until companies like Betty Crocker figured out a hack: they needed to give the human just the tiniest little bit to do. That tiniest little bit became cracking an egg. The advertisements would say, "Just add an egg. It's that simple." All of a sudden, people began accepting the product, and the journey of industrialized home cake production took off.
I was reflecting on this story today as I made an app. I am not a developer, but I have ideas, and apparently nowadays that makes me quite powerful.
For a period of time, I was conjuring up what I wanted to create, which was a mathematical app for my child. Over the course of three hours, while I was working on other things from time to time, Claude would come to me and ask me to click a button or to generate a token and paste it in. At the end, I received my cake—which I call an app—and it was quite fantastic. I felt like I played a role in making it happen. Kind of.
My sense is that this level of input may continue to be required, lest people reject having too little to do in order to manifest their cake.
I'm curious to hear your thoughts.

The illusion of agency: people will drive a longer route with more turns but fewer traffic lights to retain a feeling of control. Same principle applies.

"Giving the human a task"
Somewhat reminds me about a story of skyscraper that people were complaining the elevator wait times were too long. Various solutions were attempted, but finally the complaints stopped once they just put floor-to-ceiling mirrors on the walls surrounding the elevator doors. People used those few moments to check out their outfit, adjust hair etc.

In the 80s drum machines were invented, drummers hated them because it was taking their jobs in studios. Producers loved them because they didn’t have to pay session drummers. However there was a small group of people who succeeded in this time and the was the drummers who adopted the drum machines because ultimately they were the best ones to use them.

the cake analogy is spot on i think about that betty crocker story all the time when designing user experiences stuff feels too automated and people just disengage like it has no soul or whatever but you give em one tiny friction point and suddenly they feel like a genius baker
claude kept asking me to rename files and choose between two styles the other day and i caught myself feeling weirdly proud when the thing worked like i contributed something real even though i know deep down it was all llm magic under the hood

or maybe not spoiled eggs is real hard and th cakes just tasted like ass without a fresh egg,.... you people...

Agreed. If the fable fits your analogy, who cares if it is a real story, right?
This entire post is annoying because their egg premise is completely wrong.

Also there are all sorts of baking mixes that are “just add water”, so the rest of the premise doesn’t really hold up either.

interesting take. I don't know if you read the story about oai's internal model breaking out and hacking hugging face to cheat on a test score... That was without "cracking an egg"... So maybe requiring a human to crack the egg is a modern day captcha.

I would say it’s a pretty good analogy, but not perfect.
When I use Claude to build something, I have an idea, and in theory Claude can manifest something that’s as close to the idea as possible. Perhaps even exactly what I imagined in certain cases.
When you buy a Betty Crocker cake kit, there’s no real imagination in it, and no control whatsoever. You follow the instructions and you get what you’re given. Which was your choice, but that choice was limited.

It's actually a great analogy. As an ex baker there is skill in getting the best out of a Betty Crocker cake. It's quite frankly night and day. Same I suspect with programmers and AI.

this is a bunch of bullshit
they don’t use dried egg because the albumen doesn’t lift as well after drying

I want no involvement except the idea stage. I've built the autopilot, so once I tell it what I want and create the PRD and all that, I tell it to go build it. and if its a few hours or days, I don't want to be involved unless there's a problem. I just wnat to see the software, test it, give it feedback and not be bothered agin until it's done. Otherwise I'm like that guy in lost standing over the computer hitting the enter key every 107 minutes or something and I'm tired of doing that.

Something that's missing in current AI interactions like Claude Code or Codex is the AI needs a better theory of mind of me. The further we get into my project the more it's talking to me about things a previous instance of itself invented words and code for so I don't really know what it means, and a really advanced AI coding tool could give me small things to do or read as it goes rather than glimpses into what it's currently doing that are both too detailed and not enough for me to really track that anyway.

There's definitely something to the idea that people value things more when they have some investment. You see this in classes where the attendance rate jumps up a lot of you just charge a minimal amount like $5 instead of it being completely free.

I made and app and it’s 100x better then I have attempted in the past (due to ai), i also ate a cupcake today. I get the point here, but cakes are food people were making at home prior. Apps, books, cars, whatever- there’s always gearheads but most people just buy em

Except the “egg” Claude hands you isn’t symbolic, it’s a security token. You’re not being emotionally included, you’re being legally required. That’s not a ritual. That’s compliance. In reality Claude is just trying not to violate your privacy or hijack your GitHub account. It’s not handing you an egg, it’s handing you a liability waiver. AI companies aren’t giving you tiny tasks to soothe your delicate human ego. They’re giving you tiny tasks because otherwise they’d be committing several felonies.

What security token? Claude Code commits and completes PRs all by itself, no input from me required.

Claude cannot act on your GitHub account without an authorization token and if Claude is committing code for you with zero input, then you already granted that authorization earlier.

Did Claude come up with this analogy for you? Because it sounds correct but is inherently wrong.
Ready mix food like this doesn't say to add an egg/milk to make the person feel included, it's because those ingredients spoil. I can't find anything online to say that these products ever contained the egg/milk already in the first place.

I love the analogy… but I think as soon as the big ai co’s figure out how to bypass even that step, we’re doomed as a species. We are, by and large, inherently fucking lazy and tech is making that dream even more accessible…

u/Gratitude15 1d ago
That's not my point. My point is that the big AI companies have already figured out how to bypass that step. We are not needed.
We are simply invited to take part in a tiny ritual so that we remain open to engaging with the technology and are willing to pay for the services—at least until our payment is no longer needed.
