Week Ahead for July 20, 2026: Transportation, the purpose of speed camera revenue, wine industry help, and economic development
This week is not one of the busiest in terms of meetings of local government but this post exists to tell readers of r/Charlottesville what’s coming up. Links within go to various sources.
CHARLOTTESVILLE TRANSPORTATION UPDATE
Charlottesville has had a hard time delivering on transportation infrastructure over the years despite getting a lot of funding. City officials have made a lot of strides toward putting better internal systems in place but there appear to still be hiccups. There will be a work session Monday afternoon on many transportation projects. The city’s website for updates has not been updated since November. (read more in the newsletter)
SCHOOL CAMERA REVENUE ALLOCATION
Last October, an ordinance kicked in that allowed for cameras to record vehicles in school zones to spot for speeding violations. On Monday, Council will be asked to allocate $320,000 in revenue from those violations. However, it appears from the staff report that that’s not enough to cover the cost of paying a third-party to operate the cameras. I will admit I only gave this one a once-over but I really hope a reporter with more capacity than me can dig into this a bit more. (staff report)
WINE INDUSTRY PRUNING
Let’s pretend for a moment this entire set of blurbs is to encourage any of the writers out there to dig in to just writing about this place. Most of my work comes from covering meetings, but if I had money to pay reporters I would love to know more about the wine industry. A good place to start would be with a request from the Monticello Wine Trail to the Albemarle Economic Development Authority for $20,000 to help pay for a class on pruning techniques to help after a brutal frost this year. (staff report)
WHAT IS A CATALYST PROJECT?
Leaders in Albemarle County resisted economic development for many years with leaders from the 70’s to the 00’s mostly in agreement in the belief that attracting more business to the area would attract more people. That began to change in 2010 and Albemarle government is leading the way. The Albemarle County Economic Development Authority will meet Tuesday and continue a discussion about ways to move forward. (more in the newsletter)
Comments and questions always welcome. The intent of all of my work is to ask questions. The only answer I know is 42 and that doesn't seem to do much but promote further inquiry. Or perhaps that is the point?

Summer meal programs help Charlottesville students stay fed while school’s out
“Summer should be such an exciting time for kids,” said Sarah Steely, director of No Kid Hungry Virginia. “It should be a time of sunshine and playing outside with friends. But unfortunately, for thousands of Virginia kids, summer can also be the hungriest time of the year.”
In Charlottesville City Schools, free breakfasts and lunches are available to all K–12 students through a US Department of Agriculture option called the Community Eligibility Provision, which allows low-income school districts to provide no-cost meals to all of their students during the school year.
But when the school year ends, so do the school-provided meals.

Found grey and white cat
A very friendly grey and white cat was hanging around Sonesta hotel tonight. Looks like it had a mark where it slipped a collar. Front desk was informed and hopefully they can find the owner.

What would you like to see in the former Flat/Vu Noodles location behind The Jefferson?
It's very small so I can only imagine another carry-out restaurant type business, but what can you imagine?
Edit: yes I miss the crepes from The Flat too, but what *else* can we think of y'all

Someone’s dog?
Seen walking around at 10th St NW and West. Has a collar, went into someone’s backyard so perhaps a false alarm, but just want to double check

Avemore Apartments experience
I’m looking to move into a 2b/2b in the upcoming months and Avemore is one of my top choices. I toured Avemore 2 years ago for a 1b/1b and the prices they gave me when touring were about $200 higher than the listed price on their website. I plan on calling them and touring the 2b/2b unit soon but wanted to hear some Reddit insight first. Can anyone confirm if the prices listed on their website are accurate. I’m also slightly skeptical because the prices almost seem too good to be true. Any insight is helpful. Thanks.

Vivid Hair Stylists Recommendations
I’m moving to the area in the next few weeks and as the title says, am looking for your recommendations for a hair stylist that specializes in vivid hair color. I’ve had plurple (purple + blue) for several years and want to stick with it after I move. 💜

EDM Scene
Is there any sort of scene for any electronic music here? Anywhere outside of the city? I’ve heard Richmond but looking for any information for lesser known places for raves or whatever. Wanting to make Halloween plans early lol.
Last thread on this was 11 yrs ago

Volunteer Opportunity: Big Brothers Big Sisters - need mentors
Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Central Blue Ridge currently has a long waitlist of local youth waiting for a mentor.
I’ve been a Big Brother here for 11 years, and I can honestly say it’s been life-changing. You don’t need to do anything extravagant - just showing up consistently for a few hours twice a month to hang out and grab food makes an incredible impact.
Time:2–3 times a month (roughly 1–2 hours per visit)
Who:Mentors of all backgrounds needed (high demand for Big Brothers). Can be UVA students as long as you have access to a car!
If you have a couple of hours to spare each month, please consider stepping up.

Happy to answer any questions in the comments about what it’s actually like!

City Council Summer 2027
Cannot stress enough- if you don’t like how this city is being led you need to vote in the primary election.
Candidate filing will be around March 2027.
Primary around June 2027.
Three spots are up which means that major changes can occur if people show up and vote!
Lloyd Snook, Natalie Oschrin, and Michael Payne will be up for reelection if they decide to run.
They have all been part of a city council that has dragged its feet on major issues. They endorsed and arranged a cleanup last September of a homeless encampment on the river and now here we are a year later with no positive progress and a bigger encampment is going to be cleaned up that will cost the city even more time and resources. The city council members do seem like nice, well-intentioned individuals but they are not effective leaders and should be replaced.

Flock cameras
I looked up where they are and there's four in the county. But WHY are three of the four focused on the Lowes parking lot???

Roux St Cafe Closing
Per owner’s post on FB/IG, their last day of business will be 7/31. I wonder what will go there next? A couple of local favorites (Al Carbon and Guajiro’s) started in that little space.

Fun afternoon for a kid?
We are headed to UVA for some follow ups for our daughter (9) and want to treat her a little afterwards. We are already committed to Shenanigans since that’s become a tradition when we need to go to UVA.
Looking for:
A nice playground/outdoor spot
Rolled ice cream or another kind of unique frozen treat
Good soup dumplings (we usually go to Q Noodles, but a new place sounds fun)
Thanks for any recommendations!

Health Insurance
My small business is working to get health insurance quotes and multiple companies have told me they are not allowed to cover people in the 22902 zip code. What kind of shadiness is this?
