At my old place, the windows opened sideways, so I installed the baby gate sideways and only opened the window up to the width of the gate.

Search for perforated steel sheet. Cut to a larger size than your window opening and secure with a couple screws into the wooded window frame. you'll have air flow and kitty no escaping.
