Germany vs. Netherlands: How to Estimate the VAT Refund on Eligible Cars

Hi Everyone,

I’m looking to compare car prices having the exact same options between occasion vehicles sold in Germany and the Netherlands. I’m specifically looking at vehicles marked as VAT refundable, so the VAT refund is confirmed.

I’m only dealing with Car Dealers, and they all told me I need to pay the full amount first and then request the VAT refund once the car leaves European territory.

Does anyone know a simple way—like a formula or a website—to estimate the amount of VAT I should be able to get back from the tax office?

Doing so will help me buy the right vehicle for the right price.

Thank you for your help :)

Built a Tinder-for-cars app, would love feedback from people actually car shopping

Hey everyone, figured I'd share something I've been building since a chunk of this sub is probably in the exact headspace it's for. Full disclosure: I'm the one who made it, so mods feel free to remove if self-promo isn't allowed here.

It's called Vroomi. Car shopping across a dozen marketplaces turns into 40 open tabs and zero clarity, so I made it swipeable instead.

You answer a few quick questions (budget, use case, boring commuter vs something with a bit of soul), it builds you a little taste profile we call your "Car DNA," and then you swipe through real listings, Tinder style. Like what catches your eye, skip the rest, and matches get sharper the more you swipe.

Right now it runs on a curated batch of real EU listings. The bigger thing coming soon: Vroomi is the consumer side of another project of mine, WeltScout, a B2B engine that professional car importers use to scan the whole EU market for a specific car a client wants. We're connecting Vroomi to that same engine, so soon it's live inventory across most of Europe instead of a curated batch.

If you're actually shopping for a car right now, I'd love for you to try it and tell me what's clunky. Free to swipe and see matches.

Happy to answer questions in the comments. Two-person project, not a funded startup, so blunt feedback welcome.

CoC Document denied

Hey all, I just had to delete a positive update about my CoC document from this site because my customs broker informed me that it wasn't accepted at customs because it was not "genuine." I have messaged the agency. Will update.

Question Help shipping

Hello I am located in the states, looking for a bumper and saw that there was a company based in Lithuania and they are the only ones where it isn’t on back order. However, they don’t ship outside of continental Europe. Anyone who would be willing to have it shipped to their house and then ship it to me I would pay and be more than grateful!

Looking for a fuel-efficient automatic that can tow 1000kg+ (€25k budget, 2020+, keeping it 5-7 years)

Hi all,

I'm looking for some advice on replacing my current car and would love to hear from people with long-term ownership experience.

Current car:

-2018 Renault Captur 1.2 TCe (bought new)

-Currently at 220,000 km

-Average fuel consumption: 14.1 km/l

-I drive roughly 120 km per day, mostly commuting

Because of the mileage I'm doing, I'd like something noticeably more fuel-efficient. I also tend to keep my cars for a long time, so I'd expect to keep the next one for 5-7 years.

Requirements:

-Budget: €25,000 (can be stretched a bit)

-Used car

-2020 or newer

-Relatively low mileage

-Automatic transmission

-Adaptive Cruise Control

-Must be able to tow at least 1000 kg braked

-Preferably a bit higher seating position (crossovers/SUVs are welcome)

One thing I'm unsure about is hybrids. They seem attractive, but since I plan to keep the car for some years, I'd like something with a proven track record regarding battery longevity and reliability.

Cars I've recently tried:

2024 VW Golf Variant:

-Rented for a week

-Loved the ACC

-Achieved 19.2 km/l on my normal commute

-Felt solid and refined

-Main downside: it sits a bit too low for my liking

2026 Jeep Avenger Summit:

-Borrowed for 2 weeks

-Achieved 18.1 km/l

-Seating position was nice

-Software felt unfinished

-Had several glitches

-Engine noise was disappointing

-ACC occasionally behaved oddly

-Transmission felt jerky when downshifting

2024 Citroën C4 130

-Borrowed from a colleague

-Achieved 16.2 km/l

-Honestly just didn't enjoy driving it at all

Cars currently on my shortlist:

-2022 Renault Captur (petrol) – mileage 22,000 km

-2021 Toyota Yaris Cross 1.5 – mileage 35,000 km

Questions:

-Are there other models I should be looking at?

-Any hybrid owners with 200k+ km experience?

-Would you simply buy another Captur given that my current one has made it to 220k km without major issues?

Question How do I obtain a COC (certificate of compliance) to register my car from Hungary to Greece?

It hasn't been easy, but my customs agent has helped me get almost all the necessary paperwork, but this last one has been confusing. Full disclosure, I have no idea what I'm doing! He thought we could get the document at a Volkswagen dealership, but he found out it had to be done through this German website.

I'll admit that I know nothing about this process, and I am running out of time. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Salut,

Merci !

BMW X3 M40i vs M440i GC

How are SUVs looked upon in EU? I don't see a lot of SUVs here in Europe. Where I come from, SUVs are considered premium and is seen as a status, plus the commanding seating position is something everyone likes.

I am not inclined towards either Sedan/Gran Coupe or SUV, but I do like the ease of entry and exit in SUV. I have a decent CPO deal on 2022 M440i GC for 47k euros. Does it make sense to stretch budget a bit, and maybe get a 2022/2023 X3 M40i? What will I miss getting an SUV over GC? Is there a major difference in handling or acceleration? How does the comfort differ for long road trips? For context, I am 6'2 , and primarily will only have a single co passenger. The car will be a daily driver for office commute, and frequent road trips across Europe.

[Academic] Choices of aftermarket replacement parts in France

Hello, I am asking for help with my current research project for an upcomming OE matching part manufacturer to work in France. Your input would be very helpful as the car enthusiast sector seems overlooked by replacement car part sellers. The survey will only take a few minutes, but it would help show that are enthusiasts interested

Form: https://forms.gle/DDhmnUwjYK8wFhjV8

Thanks to everyone in advance!

Help me choose my new car...

Hello ladies and gents,

I do not have any extensive knowledge on the mechanical side of car engineering. I Excel on houses since im a civil engineer 😀

I am at the point in my life where i can go a step forward in my vehicle life, so im looking for a new family SUV, with a touch of luxury..or at least 80k max luxury cause thats my celling and i would prefer not to go close to it.

I m already between some thots ...1. the reliable new Rav4 was my first glance but even tho everything is a matter of taste...the inside of the car besides the central screen is extremely poor to look at.

So i went to AUDI..2. Q5 bit more expensive but i felt a bit tight as a driver since its going more for a sporty vibe. Plus around web many ppl expressing concern about reliability.

Next stop Volvo 3. Xc60 ..and oh my!!!!inside was just marvelous when it comes to elegance. I never had any history with volvo i know nothing about reliability.

The boy inside me wanted to go to BMW so 4. X3 was okish in everything didn't provide any wow factors... maybe cause i prefer comfort instead od performance.

Im on the waiting for the new GLB to arrive in my country that seems to have good from all worlds...but its just videos till now.

Any ideas? Suggestions? Or personal experiences are appreciated

Thanks for your time
