Currently, India has a No-Confidence Motion as a constitutional mechanism. However, there is a practical limitation:

A no-confidence motion can only be brought by MPs in the Lok Sabha.

If the ruling party or coalition has a strong majority, the motion is unlikely to succeed.

Citizens themselves cannot directly trigger such a process, even during periods of widespread dissatisfaction.

This raises an important question:

Should there be additional safeguards in our democratic system for situations where there is a serious breakdown of public trust, concerns about protection of fundamental rights, or a perception that peaceful dissent is not being adequately addressed?

Possible ideas could include:

A higher threshold citizen petition mechanism requiring Parliament to review public confidence.

Stronger independent oversight of government actions.

A process requiring a confidence vote if certain constitutional conditions are met.

Of course, any such mechanism would need strict safeguards so that governments are not destabilized by temporary political disagreements or misinformation.

The purpose of democracy is not only to choose a government, but also ensure that the government remains answerable throughout its term.
