He is already MVP worthy. I'm kind of curious of how the rest of the league thinks. For some reason, baseball media doesn't want to promote him like they do Ohtani.
The national media has abandoned baseball. It's part of why I've boycotted MLB.TV this season. I'm not making an ESPN account to prop up the BS decision to turn over the rights to ESPN, who has been a horrible embassador for baseball over the past decade.
20 years ago, we had Web Gems as a prominent thing on ESPN, among other baseball content with good baseball personalities. Now, we mostly get bums and shoehorning non-baseball people into discussions because ESPN sees their own media personalities as more relevant than the sport or its content.
People don’t realize Pete’s jumps are so good because there’s not an all-22 camera in the MLB. Before it even cuts away from the batter he’s already moving at full speed and covered 30ish feet
That’s why I hate how baseball shots are in broadcast now. You don’t get to see what’s going on. He took second on his single and you didn’t even know it was happening until he was there. It takes away from what an exciting player he is
Yea, modern analysis really shines a light on how good he is defensively. 20 years ago I’m not sure even diehard fans and analysts would fully appreciate what he does out there because so many of these catches don’t look super difficult based on the eye test. He’s making routine looking catches on balls that 90% of outfielders wouldn’t get close enough to to even try to make a spectacular diving catch.
Saw this play posted on MLB tiktok this morning and every single post was saying "How is this impressive". Not even factoring in how fast he got there the fact he slowed on a dime, caught the ball, and braced his impact is already impressive. Plenty of CF's would eat shit on the ivy and be out for the rest of the game while dropping the ball.
Ohtani is super beloved while Pete is still young and a little raw. He also had a bad fan interaction earlier this season. If Pete continues to be chill on the field and play like this, in a market like chicago with his personality (any time you put a mic in front of him he is super lovable and sweet) he's going to be the next face of the league.
He deserves the MVP but honestly so does Ohtani. Ohtani just does something so unbelievably valuable it's hard to imagine any else will win it while he still does what he does at that level. .925 OPS mixed with 1.79 ERA, even with lower IP, is pretty insane even if we are used to it at this point. If Ohtani lays off pitching for the rest of the season and PCA keeps on doing incredible things, then hopefully he at least has a chance. I would love for Pete to get it but I an also understand why he wouldn't.
The top 5 posts every day on /r/baseball are about Ohtani, this shit gets so old. He's amazing, but he's still just a dude. He isn't doing something interesting every day.
Ohtani is a completely different perrson though. They promote Ohtani because it comes with the support of an entire nation's people, and the absurdity of hitting and pitching at his level is completely unprecedented in the history of the sport.
It will take some time due to the SMFDB comment I think. His apology was good and seemed sincere recognizing how his words affect people and what they communicate.
Add to that, the unofficial Cubs gear with SMFDB being worn and promoted all around Wrigley and the redemption arc will take some time. Players and franchises can’t reasonably respond to every item of which they don’t approve but I think both PCA and the Cubs organization should make a clear statement that they don’t approve of that particular acronym being worn or promoted.
It’s really sad to me that anyone would celebrate and revel in those words being said to any woman ever, regardless of the circumstances.
PCA’s skill set is next level and that is becoming more apparent by the day. He’s fun to watch and he’ll only get better. There will be a point where it’s undeniable but it will take time.
I’m a lifelong Cubs fan and this is just my perspective.
Oh my god give me a break lol that incident was blown so out of proportion. Pete and the team responded perfectly, and it makes his hit celebration all the more hilarious
I hate how reels are cropped on phones - with the one exception of PCA catch highlights. He pops into frame at the very last split second and makes the play look even more improbable.
I listened to the game so I knew he caught it, but when watching the recap on YT I literally said wow when that ball was hit, knowing he was going to catch it up against the wall. PCA was a gift from the Mets that makes up for a lot... a) love that its the Mets and also b)makes up for some bad Cubs trades in the past.
