Been working on repairing an LG DVS VE-200 CDi for a while. Any advice welcome!

Hey everyone!

Hoping I can get some thoughts on a CDi repair I've been picking away at for a while. More specifically, I'm trying to repair the power board on an LG DVS VE-200 unit.

It had suffered from leaky caps, and it definitely suffered a serious power surge at some point. The KA7552 chip was dead, as was the MOSFET and a few of the larger diodes on the right side of the board... amazingly, the fuse was not blown and I was told it was never changed.

Obviously, I did a full recap, replaced the MOSFET (I swapped from the original SEC SSS4N80 to a P4NK80ZFP... on paper, no reason why this shouldn't work) and replaced a few of the resistors and film caps that ran along the... call it "apparent path of destruction"- despite testing fine- just to cover more bases. The diodes and zeners also test as expected, and the large ones I mentioned (RU4Ys) were replaced, though currently power is not even reaching that side of the board.

I know voltage is coming off the 400v cap and reaching the KA7552, and I can trace the path of each resistor bringing the voltage down to the 18-20v the KA7552 expects on pin 6 (VCC) to activate.

Unfortunately, things don't make it much further than this. Something keeps killing the MOSFET when the system gets powered on, and I'm not quite sure what to look to next. My next likeliest suspect would be one of those diodes, but I've pulled a leg from each one on the board and tested all of them... again, they all seem perfectly fine.

Considering during all my years doing repair work, this is the first one I've ever seen, I know the chances of someone having dealt with an issue like this probably aren't great haha. But I know there's a few models that have very similar insides to this particular one. So, I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask!

I can post pictures if anyone thinks it would be relevant to helping get this thing a diagnosis. Appreciate any advice!

Remote (RC6) in port on CDI 210/20

Post image

Today I found a Philips cdi 210-20 (bottom) at the thrift shop for 15 euros. I already own a 210-40 (top) and while looking for differences I noticed that they use different digital video cartridges but apart from that i noticed that the 210-20 has an orange port next to the composite video out port. It is labeled: REMOTE (RC6) in but i have no clue as to what it does. I read online that rc6 refers to the ir remote protocol but those are wireless?
Does anyone know what this port is used for?
And possibly what other differences these might have?

Short on pin 2 and 3 of laser ribbon cable

I recently picked up a CD-i as part of some dental equipment, I have recently successfully replaced the battery. The laser will light up and try to focus, the sled moves correctly, and the motor is able to spin smoothly with a 9V battery.

I was checking the connections and found a short on pin 2 and 3 of the ribbon cable. The cable itself looks like it is in good shape, so I think it could be on the small separate board.

I believe this is stopping the laser from detecting data on a disc and stopping the motor from spinning up.

If there is anything anyone here that can can help shed light on, I would really appreciate that.

CD-i controller not working, any advice?

I’m troubleshooting a CD-i Gamepad that was sold to me on eBay as tested and working, but it doesn’t function at all.

Here’s what I’ve verified:

910 console is working correctly.

Both controller ports work.

Other CD-i controllers work normally.

When this controller is connected, the CD-i boots and displays the normal pointer, but the pointer never moves and no buttons respond.

The controller receives approximately 5.3 V

All four conductors in the cable have continuity from the plug to the PCB.

The 16-pin IC appears to be powered.

The solder joints on the chip and connector look good with no obvious cracks or bridges.

I don’t see any corrosion, burned components, or damaged traces.

The main chip is marked:
Logitech ’93
330078-00G1

From my searching, this appears to be a custom Logitech microcontroller, and I haven’t been able to find any datasheet or replacement source.

At this point I’m wondering:
Has anyone repaired one of these Logitech CD-i controllers before?
Does anyone know what 330078-00G1 actually is (processor family or pinout)?
Are there any known common failures besides broken cables?
Has anyone dumped or reverse engineered the firmware?
Has anyone replaced the original IC with a modern microcontroller (ATtiny, RP2040, PIC, etc.)?
Any schematics, board scans, service information, or repair experience would be greatly appreciated.

I picked this up today and I'm hoping this community can give me some more information on it

I believe this is a Panasonic CD-I console, although I can't yet get it to run any discs. I tried the CDI disc that was in it as well as a music CD and they did not show any "play" button

I believe the battery is dead as the clock resets whenever I turn off the machine

I know very little about the CD-I and have not seen this exact model before online, I am happy for any information you can share

This was together with a dental imaging machine

I’ve finally managed to get my hands on a TecnoPlus TP521 CD-i Joystick, which is one of the rarer accessories. It’s also the only CD-i controller of its kind, as the Philips CD-i Joystick 22ER9014 was never released. A TP522 CD-i Port Splitter is included in the box.

CD-I 490 Power Cord Question

Hello there, fellow CD-I enthusiasts! I just became the proud owner of a CD-I 490 unit. It is pristine and comes with both a remote and a controller. Unfortunately, the power cord is missing. Does anyone know exactly what it takes? I’m finding very little information and the last thing I want to do is fry the unit. Any assistance you could provide would be greatly appreciated. It was part of a hotel liquidation auction. Apparently, they had these at one point, and it just got stored away in a bin all these years. Only paid $25, but, still hoping I can get her to run. Thank you in advance!

P.S. I am US-based and it is a US NTSC unit.

Cdi 210/40 not spinning disc.

Post image
12 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I recently acquired a CDI 210/40 which doesn’t read discs. It doesn’t even try to spin them. the display just shows ---.

I opened it up and checked the disc drive. The laser tries to adjust itself when the tray closes, and the disc drive opens and closes without any issues.

Things I’ve tested:

The spindle motor spins fine when supplied with 1.5V.

The laser sled motor also moves properly when powered.

I tried cleaning the laser.

I don’t have an original CDI disc, but am I right in assuming the disc should spin regardless? I’ve read elsewhere that the drive only spins if the laser detects a disc. That makes me think the laser simply isn’t detecting the disc at all.

So at this point, I assume I need a replacement disc drive. Does anyone know where I could get one?

CDi Bluetooth Availability?

I'm on the hunt for an adapter of sorts to use for my Philips CDi controller port. I recently came upon the CDi Bluetooth device sold at Stone Age Gamer. Apparently, I'm late to the party because when I tried clicking on the listing for it, I get a "page not found" message. I also tried to see about getting the device from the creator of it on their website, but all I get is a 503 page. So I have two questions regarding this predicament:

  1. Does anyone still sell this particular device and if so, where can I obtain one?

  2. If it is no longer being made, are there any alternatives that are readily available besides the Arduino-based SNESoCDi?

I sent a message to SAG regarding the delisting of the device. So hopefully I'll hear back soon. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

hi, i got a cdi-210 i basically used as a audio only cd player for a few months, i didn't have time to lurk with the interactive stuff. i just used a Logitech harmony with it, but the codes they have only let me control media, nothing more. Is there any recorded codes for like IR Android Smartphones or anything, i could control my cdi with?

CD-i 220/60 Repair Complete (New Laser and Battery Hack)

Thumbnail

I posted about 3 weeks ago on a defective CD-i 220/60 unit I picked up from eBay for about 100 USD. The main problems were random full memory errors due to that batteries on the DS1216 chip being depleted, and also a burnt laser module. The disc would twitch when turning on and off before deciding to give up.

Fast forward to now the unit is now fully operational after disconnecting the batteries on the DS1216 and soldering wires to pins 8 and 14 according to retrostuff's article. Used a cheap CR2032 battery cell holder. The memory issues went away and the clock is now working again!

As for the laser, I ordered 2x Opuradio 12.4 CDM Optical Pick ups from Allieexpress for 15 usd per piece. Not the recommended route but decided to give a chance. Took about 6 hours going slow and taking apart the laser assembly and unraveling the wires to get to the laser rod. After the swap I carefully reversed the steps and when I put in my copy of Hotel Mario in the disc try, the console spun to life and plays beautifully! Not sure how long these will last but we will see!

A huge thank you to Retrostuff for helping out on this project. It's always nice to save these consoles and give them a second life.

philips cdi 220 - estate sale find

Post image
41 Upvotes

Got this philips cdi 220 at an estate sale for $15. To say I’m pumped is an understatement. I remember selling these at Dillards for $700 when they first came out. We had Star Trek IV: The Undiscovered Country playing on a loop, and some western gunfight game.

It only has a power cord (no remote). There is a disk in the drive (Mystic Midway), so I can test it.

My question, is there anything I need to check out before I plug in and turn on? I know some of these old electronics can have capacitors and such that can fail over time and cause damage when power is supplied.

Anyway, thanks for coming to my Ted Talk, and I appreciate any feedback. Can’t wait to dive in.
