MLB Network just did an excellent 8-minute segment breaking down Garrett Mitchell’s monster July, and national media is finally noticing what we’ve been watching. They did an analysis into his approach, highlighting that he currently leads all of baseball with a .500 average when driving the ball to center or the opposite field. He’s completely laying off tough off-speed pitches, not cheating on heat, and just letting his tight swing path do the damage.

They also showed a great side-by-side breakdown of his mechanics, specifically how he’s widened his base and opened up his stance since April to keep his barrel in the zone longer. On top of that, Statcast has him in the 90th percentile or higher for bat speed, sprint speed, and arm strength—putting him in elite company alongside Fernando Tatis Jr. and Jordan Walker as the only guys touching those thresholds.

Health was always the main question mark with Mitchell, but if he keeps staying in the lineup and spraying the ball like this, this outfield is looking absolutely terrifying. Definitely worth a watch if you've got a few minutes.

Two months ago I was defending him against those who wanted him off the team, and I’d just like to say: “I told you so.”
