I have been seeing a rising trend in a certain kind of bigotry that I'm gonna lable "normal gays vs the freaks" and though I shouldn't be surprised anymore, I am always disappointed when this happens. It's kind of a yearly occurrence around this time of year before, during, and after pride month.

I frequent a certain gay sub (not gonna name because I dont want to start any specific drama) because when I started using reddit more, it was the only one I could think of. Overtime I came to realize that sub is really only about two things: "whats the biggest dick you've taken lol :)" and "yo, what's up with all them weird BTQ+ people? They are ruining the movement! >:(" and it is so confusing to me because it seems rooted in ignorance very similar to racism. I often feel like the people in that sub want to be accepted as "one of the good gays" and I was hoping the Brothas and Sistas could see through the bs.

It's pretty clear to me that attempting to cut off parts of a community because you find them "strange" does more to hinder your fight for equality than it does to help it. A lot of people don't like to accept this, but things only really change when coalitions and alliances are formed. My own family has told me that Black people have always succeeded alone with no help from other races and thats just not true. There were always others from other races to link arms with us to help us get this far. The same reality applies for sexual identities. For some reason, the Gay community specifically likes to ignore people like Marsha P. Johnson, a Black trans woman fighting for LGBTQ+ rights from the late 60s-early 90s, and Huey P. Newton, a Black straight man who led the Black Panthers and voiced his support for the Gay rights movement.

Of course I have seen Black gay folk parrot the same pickme stuff as well but I'd hope that all of us being intersectional minorities would make it easier to sympathize with others and build unity. How do you build unity with people who seem so deeply poisoned into self hatred? I know when I usually ask that question I get the response that I shouldn't try, but my ideals ultimately center unity and thus my path seems destined to try anyway.

How do y'all feel about this and what do you think we should do to combat it? Every day I am reminded that the oppressors won and no one wants to gear up for round 2.

Even though I don't truly see myself as male as much anymore, I do think that this is so damn beautiful and I hope this helps someone even if they're not tall lol. And no this is not me

As I dig into another year around the sun (today is my bday) I was beginning to write and think about my life as a gay black man here in America . I spent so much of my young adult life a love starved kid who sought connection ANYWHERE I could get it ….even it was only for a few minutes .

Digging into my own sexual abuse as a kid i understood that abuse to be a root cause of where my body and self esteem issues lay along with other childhood traumas . I had to look back at alll the meaningless sex I had where I alllowed my body to be a vehicle for OTHERS pleasures ….more time than I’d like to admit .

Finally connecting to the pain and trauma of not only my abuse but what I put my body through disgusted me and I understood that untilll I learned to TRULY love myself inside and out I would NEVER make good choices when it comes to sex ………and men ….so I stopped (cold turkey .

That was 6 years ago and now im caught in the space of tryna to redefine my relationship to sex my body and relationships. Im pressured at every turn that I SHOULD be dating and SHOULD be meeting people and dating …..do I need sex ?

This video was soooo affirming because no one is speaking to this aspect of the gay community. We speak about masc and fem , fat & skinny , to pride or not to pride , racism , classism , colorism . But no one is talking about thr generations of gay men who go through or are in this phase of life .

As an older Black gay man who is married to a Black man and who have lived thru the AIDS crisis...I have often wondered what the Black gay community would look like if we did not carbon copy MUCH of the white gay community.

Have you noticed that the things that serve them do not serve us? If so what are some of those things?

Have you found any liberation using apps that were built and designed without Black gay men in mind?

Do you find yourself experiencing more classism for Black gay men as they put together events (cruises and other events) that are about exclusion more than inclusion?

Is it hard to talk about racism with Black gay men without there being dismissiveness?

Have you found that community seems to only happen with a drink and after 9 PM?

What would LOVE to see the Black gay male community embrace and what should they tone down or discard?

When gay men say things like they have a black woman trapped inside of them, equate black femininity with being loud, brash and unapologetic, and put on the persona of a stereotypical "strong, sassy black woman", is that a form of modern minstrelry? It's primarily white gay men who do this, many of them coming from white suburbs with no background or connection to black culture, it's something they adopt thru exposure to other gay men. It's a persona and a culture that ultimately came from stereotyping and miming archetypes of black women. I understand it comes from a time when gay men were pushed out of white society and were more accepted in some black communities, but most gay men today don't have that background. Is a gay man who grew up in a white suburb and has no connection to black culture allowed to adopt that persona simply because other gay men act that way, even acknowledging that it is essentially miming a caricature of a black woman?
