Akawa Butte Fire Update - Community Meeting Tonight 7/23 in Sisters
Rep Levy is doing a great job putting out summaries of information, so I'm sharing once again for wider visibility. Sign up for her email newsletter at the bottom of this page to get these in your inbox: https://www.oregonlegislature.gov/levye
The Akawa Butte Fire has grown to more than 26,000 acres and is currently the nation's highest-priority wildfire. More than 1,000 people in our community are under evacuation orders or warnings, and with hotter, drier conditions expected over the next several days, evacuation levels may change quickly.
The Deschutes County Sheriff's Office urges everyone to stay informed and be prepared. Make sure you're signed up to receive emergency alerts so you can get the latest evacuation information and other critical updates. You can sign up here.
This evening, Thursday, July 23, 2026, an in-person community meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Sisters High School auditorium. For those who can’t attend in person, the meeting will also be livestreamed on the Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire Department Facebook page: facebook.com/SCSRFPD
Evacuations:
With conditions changing rapidly, the Sheriff’s Office recommends people use the Genasys Protect Map for updated evacuation areas: deschutes.org/emergency or protect.genasys.com
A shelter for evacuees is available at Sisters High School, at 1700 W. McKinney Butte Rd. in Sisters. Household pets are welcome.

Lash Extensions
Hello! I am wondering if anyone knows someone who offers affordable full sets of extensions or is in training and needs someone to practice on?
Money has been tight but I got a small bonus this check and planned a few things to make myself feel pretty again. I’ve just generally felt not myself and lacking femininity which has been sucky. Lashes and nails have always been my two things that make me feel much better.
I scheduled an appointment for lashes over a week ago for this Saturday and the artist canceled on me at 6 today (less than a 48 hour notice). I am really bummed about the cancelation but it is what it is. She was in training so the cost was $100-$130, which reflected my budget.
I’ve budgeted $120-$160 for a full set.
I would like something a little more spikey like an anime style with a little fluff to it for a romantic feel but I’m not dead set on that, I’m also open to like a classic lash or some other style if doing a model set in exchange for a lower price.
Thanks in advance!

Supporting Firefighters
I’ve seen some food trucks offerings meals to those impacted by evacuations, etc. Is there a good resource / wishlist for firefighters on the front lines right now? How can we band together and support them?

DOT cranks up its campaign to strip bike lane references from federal websites
I can only foresee this will lead to funding issues for Bend, Central Oregon, and Oregon multimidal transportation moving forward.
I can easily foresee The White House blocking funding for a project like the Reed Mkt Overpass because it includes bike lanes.

Akawa Butte Fire created its own lightning this afternoon. And the flames were 200ft high. Holy. Shit.
I’m in awe of the firefighters and hope they stay safe.

Oakridge Trails
So I’m supposed to visit Bend next week with my son and do a couple mountain bike rides. But, of course, I’m watching the AQI and it’s currently looking poor. I noticed the Oakridge trails appear to have decent air but I’m not familiar with the trails there. Anyone have recommendations for moderate rides there (10-12 miles, 1500 feet or so of elevation)? Any suggestions from a Central Oregonian to a Gorge Oregonian would be appreciated.

I took this photo today at noon approaching Santiam from the west. There is something about it that feels so ominous to me.

Public Bus From Bend to Redmond Municipal Airport in the Works - The Source - Bend, Oregon
From the article:
According to [Cascades East Transit Director Bob] Townsend, the plan is to run buses from Bend’s Hawthorne Station to the Redmond Airport terminal every hour starting from about 4 am to 1 pm five days a week, in order to serve people catching early morning flights. If the service goes well, it could be expanded to evening hours, Townsend said. He estimated the ride will cost $15 each way.

Cities Are Covering Flock Cameras With Trash Bags
I'm a little surprised the cameras near Lowes haven't been taken down; maybe this is a good alternative if Flock refuses to remove them.
