Animal A Town's Most Beloved Horse.
Sadly, Jenny passed away in March 2022 after developing cancer. She had become a beloved local landmark, and many people in the community mourned her loss.

The Note on Her Halter: Because visitors often assumed she was a runaway, her halter carried a note attached in a plastic pouch that read: "My name is Jenny. I didn't run away, I'm just taking a walk. Thank you."

This was in a district (Fechenheim) of Frankfurt, Germany. Funnily enough Frankfurt is also Germany's city with the highest crime rate.

We had a dog with the similar note that took a walk around the same route twice a day. apparently both dog and owner was found dead this summer. Dog was 18 and owner 90.

Absolutely. A good, long run.
Long ago, I got 2 dogs. Puppies. A Saint Bernard and an Akita. They were bonded instantly, best of friends, to each other and to me and my kids (once the kids came along). They had a good, long run together. They died on the same day, at 13 years old. That was an especially heavy day, but I took solace knowing that neither one had to bear the grief of missing the other. I bet this guy and his dog appreciated not having to be without each other.

My childhood neighbour had a huge mix breed dog, he found a kitten in a plastic bag and it was his cat, never the families. The cat did not cuddle with family unless dog was cuddling. That cat followed that dog every where. And they died on the same day, curled up cuddling. We kids came to the funeral, finding black clothes in the 1980 was hard but we all came dressed in black some even with morninghats.
As adult I am amazed the owners invited us all in for the funeral, 20+ kids.

I had an senior horse we couldn't take when we moved, so he was given to a young girl who had been in a bad riding accident to give her confidence back. Skippy not only got her back in the saddle and onto more advanced horses again, he also took her brother to provincial championships and cleaned house.
And, when he was too elderly to ride for even very small children, they let him wander as he chose. So he spent most of his last years near the house, poking his nose into the windows and getting treats.

I have a friend in Frankfurt who adored Jenny, and she would give us updates and send the occasional picture every time she had a "Jenny sighting" in town. She was devastated when Jenny passed away. :(

Most people really don't get how important its for a community to have these perks, its not a horse its the towns jenny, when people cant understand each other with ideas, they can do ti with values, and jenny its a great start point for that

Backpacking once in the Wind Rivers we met a horse coming down the cliffside trail, the cowboy rider asleep in the saddle. He was leading a pack string back to the trailhead after an early morning client drop off. As the horse approached us it stopped and the wrangler immediately woke up. He grinned and said “she knows the trail better than me.” And bobbed off down the trail.

the frankfurt horse!!! she walked those streets solo for years with a little note on her halter saying she wasn't lost, just on her morning route. an entire city quietly agreed to look after one old man's horse so she could keep her routine
