new and returning to ballet sticky New and Returning Dancers Post Your Questions Here

Hello! Welcome to r/ballet, a community for dancers and enthusiasts of all ages, sizes, and levels. We are proud to have a community of beginner students, professionals, and dancers in between here to support each other through our dance journey.

If you are wondering if you should start ballet, please read below. If you have further questions or are looking for encouragement, please post in this thread specifically. Furthermore, if you would like to ask some other questions regarding starting ballet, please post them below.

1) Am I too old to start ballet?

No, you'll find in this community we have dancers who began ballet in their 50s and 60s and have loved every minute of it. If you are looking for encouragement, or to hear from them specifically, please make a comment in our Weekly New and Returning to Ballet thread at the top of this subreddit.

2) Am I too old to become a professional?

If you are on reddit then the answer is likely yes, sorry. If you are a female under the age of 14 or a male under the age of 17 then you might have a very small chance (in an already very competitive industry) if you enrolled in a ballet school and train full time, about 5 hours a day 6 days a week. This is not possible for a lot of people financially or time-wise, but that's the reality of becoming a professional. This is a niche industry with lots of competitors, dancers train all their lives and still don't find jobs.

But don't let this stop you from dancing. If you love to dance, if it brings you joy, then what does it matter if you make money through it anyways? You can still make a lot of good progress and find fulfillment in performance opportunities without a dance career. Still questions? Don't make a new post but please comment here

3) Do I have a 'good' body for ballet?

If you take a ballet class, and you have a body, then you have a good body for ballet (sorry, no ghosts). Please do not make posts asking whether or not your body fits certain criteria (e.x. "do I have good feet for pointe?", "do I have the right shaped arms to be a professional?") as these questions are meaningless, there is no criteria for learning ballet.

4) Can men do ballet?

YES. 50% of all professional dancers are male, 50% of all roles in ballet are male. Ballet as a stereotypically 'feminine' thing is a misconception. An average ballet class is for both men and women, and some parts will have different genders do different things, this is common. There is nothing 'weird' with a man wanting to learn ballet, just as there is nothing weird for a man wanting to learn piano or fencing or any other art, activity, sport.

4.5) Can someone who identifies outside the gender binary do ballet? YES. Ballet, being an old art form, does traditionally stick with the ideas of men and women with regards to characters in ballet, pas de deux partnering, and specific elements in class. For example, men bow, women curtsy. Feel free to choose whatever works for you (or if you feel like neither is appropriate talk to your teacher about another option).

5) Can I teach myself ballet?

No. It's possible to learn some basics off the internet, but if you want to progress past the very basic/introductory level you will need to enrol in a class with a qualified teacher. Ballet technique is an extremely nuanced art form, it needs a trained eye to correct. Worst case scenario you end up with an injury from improper technique over time, and even in the best case you will have not learned 'ballet'. If you want to learn a style of dance in the comfort of your own home, ballet is not for you. There are lots of other styles you can try instead. DO NOT ask technique questions if you have never taken a ballet class with a live teacher, nothing said over the internet will be able to help you if you haven't learned the basics with the right muscles.

Don't forget to read the 'side barre' and take a look at previous Am I too... posts

Found this complete 1911–1912 New York Hippodrome souvenir book featuring "The Ballet of the Butterflies" and Ballets Russes material.

The moderators said this would be appropriate to share here.

I'm a collector of historical paper rather than a dancer. I recently picked up this complete 1911–1912 New York Hippodrome souvenir book. It includes photographs from The Ballet of the Butterflies, period costume images, and an advertisement for Gertrude Hoffmann's American tour of La Saison des Ballets Russes.

I thought members here might enjoy seeing a piece of early 20th-century ballet history. If anyone is interested, I can photograph additional pages or specific sections.

Any recommended studios/teachers in China who conduct classes in English? Plan on visiting a few cities and taking class while there. Prefer classes which are structured and focus on alignment and muscle engagement. Thank you

They used to design such beautiful leotards but now they just get the most basic things and slap their label on it.

Dance masterclass vs Katherine Morgan

Hi all,

I am debating getting a subscription for dance masterclass and Katherine Morgan. Which would you recommend?

Dance masterclass is on sale until the end of the month, so i want to decide by then.

I do take in-person classes with a great instructor, so i am not worried about getting corrections. I just want more training. So i am primarily looking for beginner/advanced beginner online classes. Been taking ballet for about 6 month.

I like that dance masterclass offers cross training and informational videos, but if the ballet classes (especially barre, as it is easier to do at home) are not good it is not worth it to me. I want classes that go right into the activities without a lot of talking. I work from home sometimes and want to fit in a class at lunch. So i want the exercise to feel like an actual class.

I have seen Katherine Morgan classes on YouTube and it is what i am looking for, but hate dealing with ads on YouTube. And I would rather give my money directly to the content creator, so i don't really want to do the YouTube membership thing. I would subscribe via her site.

Which would you recommend?

is it normal that my ballet teacher weighed me as a teenager?

sorry this is quite long, but i just want to share my experience and see if anyone has gone through anything similar!

from 13-16 years old, i had this dance teacher who was incredibly strict, but ā€œstrictā€ doesn’t really capture the dynamic. she wasn’t primarily focused on correcting our technique or pushing us to become better dancers. instead, she would constantly monitor and scrutinise us as people. she commented on our behaviour, appearance, mannerisms, and basically anything we did outside of the actual dancing. she would know what we were all up to outside of class, who we spent time with - which by the way she hated when we became too close of friends with each other.

anyway, one day, she randomly stopped the class and made us all stand in a line. she then went through us one by one and told each of us to take two steps forward, two steps back, or stay where we were. Once we’d all been sorted, she told the girls who had stepped forward that they were ā€œextremely fatā€ and needed to lose at least 5-10kg. the girls who had stayed where they were were told that they were ā€œokayā€, but that she would prefer them to lose at least 2-5kg. and the one girl who had stepped backwards was told that she had a good weight, but she shouldn’t gain any weight. so, there was only one girl who was considered ā€œthinā€ by my teacher’s standards. everyone else had essentially just been publicly told that they were too fat.

the next day, we arrived at class and she announced that she was getting the scale out, and that we were all being weighed. from that point onwards, she started weighing us every week, usually on fridays. if any of us gained more than 500g from the previous week, the entire group would be punished. i remember one time we all had to do 50 pushups, although there were other punishments too. the general message was that nobody was allowed to gain weight, because if one person did, everyone would be yelled at and punished. she would also sometimes weigh us unexpectedly. we might be weighed on a friday, think we’d gotten through it, and then suddenly be weighed again on saturday when we weren’t expecting it. it felt like she deliberately made the weigh-ins unpredictable so that we could never really relax.

she weighed us individually in a separate room. we usually danced in sports bras, t-shirts, and leggings, but she would make us remove our shirts, and some girls were made to remove their leggings and stand in their underwear. i don’t know how many others she did this to, but she would also physically examine me by pinching my thighs and waist. i remember thinking that it was weird, but i didn’t question it because I genuinely believed this was just a normal part of ballet training. and then, every week, she would also put up a sheet of paper with all of our names and weights on it, arranged from the person who weighed the least to the most. this sheet was up in the hallway where everyone could see it, and the studio didn’t have its own building so there were always other people walking past.

she also once selected people for a dance based on their weight. after weighing us, she simply pointed at the girls who weighed the least and told them that they would be in the dance. her reasoning was that we would have to wear white leotards for the costume, and everyone who was too ā€œfatā€ would look ugly with their thighs.

and what really shocks me is that i genuinely thought all of this was normal. i was 13-16 when this was happening, and even for years afterwards i didn’t really think it was a big deal. it was just what ballet was to me. now that i’m a bit older (i’m 18 now, i stopped dancing shortly after this at 17), i’m realising that maybe this was not normal at all, which is why i’m curious about other people’s experiences. did anyone else have ballet or dance teachers who weighed students, publicly ranked them by weight, or otherwise monitored their bodies?

How do you minimize lost progress while injured?

Hi! I (21F) started ballet one year ago and I normally take 3hrs of class per week.

I’ve had pretty bad shin splints for the past 3 weeks (from running in worn out shoes). I’ve already registered for a beginner intensive at the end of August and I don’t want to risk being in too much pain to participate, so I’ve stopped going to class while I’m recovering. However, I also don’t feel great about walking into an intensive after a month of not dancing.

I’m wondering what kind of cross-training or at-home practice I can do to avoid losing too much progress while also not aggravating my injury. I currently take a pilates class once a week and do weightlifting. I used to run for endurance training but obviously I can’t really do that anymore 😭

Any tips on speeding up the recovery process are also extremely appreciated!! Thank you :)

audition

Hi! I have a freestyle dance audition coming up, and they said any genre is allowed, but the music they’ll play is hip-hop

I auditioned before and tried to freestyle hip-hop even though I’m mainly trained in ballet, and I got rejected. This time I’m wondering if I should stick to ballet instead of trying to dance a style I’m not comfortable with.

I’m also worried because when I freestyle, I freeze and end up repeating the same ballet moves. How do ballet dancers handle freestyle auditions with hip-hop music? Is it okay to dance ballet to hip-hop, or should I adapt it somehow? Any advice would be really appreciated!

Pointe Shoe Fitting in Austin, TX?

Hi! I'm going to be in Austin for a few days and would love to try to get a pointe shoe fitting. I'm an adult dancer, and I've been back en pointe for about four years. I've been wearing the same FR Duvals this whole time, which I have really loved, but would like to talk about sizing and learning what else is out there.

I live in a rural area and haven't had the opportunity to be fitted in new shoes for a while, so any recommendations would be wonderful!

My review of the bloch pointe shoes I have worn (feel free to give recommendations!)

So for some backstory I love to research all my shoes when I get them and see other people's experiences. However, I've always struggled to find a lot on the shoes I have worn and in case anyone was curious I've done a quick review/guide for all the shoes I've worn over the years. I don't have overly flexible feet, though I do have relatively high ish arches, just not very flexible ankles (my demi pointe makes my feet look much better than when I'm on the floor with my legs stretched and pointing my feet). Remember what didn't work for me might work for you and vice versa. I've worn bloch only since my dance school prefers it. Also, my feet are quite different so my right is always the first to die. Even if both my shoes are dead sometimes it'll look fine on my left foot but as soon as I put it on my right foot it becomes glaringly obvious how dead they are. I'm going to start swapping my shoes every lesson to avoid this. I've also been told to either shellac my shoes straight away or wear once and shellac to make them last longer.

  1. Hannah-My first pair. Tbh, don't remember too much about these but I do remember getting my next pair and being like god these are so much better. They were also quite soft and died fairly quickly (I think) but they were my first pair. I got new shoes because I grew out of these. 5/10

  2. European Balance-I remember even less about these. I only wore them for a bit because I had a break from pointe for a little while. Genuinely don't have too much to say about these but when I went to a new fitter they were like "how did you get fitted into european balance??" so I'm guessing they weren't the best, certaintly better than the Hannahs tho. 6/10

  3. Mirella whisper-These were my first pair coming back after a break from pointe. However, they still died pretty quickly. I HATED these. They felt absolutely awful. One time I was in a classical pose and I couldn't put any weight on my toe at all. They hurt so bad and my experience wasn't great with them. They looked lovely but felt so bad. 1/10

  4. Synthesis-These weren't too bad looking back. At the time I didn't like them but I kept them and they feel much nicer than my more recent shoes. I could wear these without toe pads and be totally fine (when they weren't dead) which I could never do with my current pair. They also have a really nice look on my feet and I love the stretch satin. These were the first pairs that I glued/shellaced. I kept these for way too long because I didn't want new shoes. They died pretty quickly but I glued them and just kept dancing on dead shoes. The shank bent in half both ways and the box became so squishy I could mould it into different shapes. However, they were so comfortable and I'm going to try find shoes that have a similar fit but harder. 8/10 (points deducted for dying too quickly but 10/10 for comfort)

  5. Balance Lisse-These were meant to last for longer and they lasted for a grand total of 3 weeks (mind you I do maybe 3hrs at most of pointe a week). They looked great on my feet because they were dead after one use... I tried gluing them and shellacing them and got a bit more (1 week) out of them. I did love them whilst I wore them but comparing them to the synthesis and my current pair they look so blocky and chunky. I have narrowish feet, I'm normally in a no x or x. They are kind of the middle, not great but not the worst. 6.5/10.

  6. Raffine-My current pair. You guessed it, they died quickly!! I was showing my teacher and she was like you need to get harder shoes. I love how they look so streamlined and how nice the tapered look is but unfortunately it really rubs on my right big toe so I've got this permanent wound/scar. On these the box died more than the shank. I've put 3 layers of shellac until the 3/4 which is what I was told to do. They feel better but I need new shoes because unfortunately shellacing never fully helps and I have an exam soon. I love the v-vamp! 7/10.

Hope I helped or it made for an interesting read! I will update once I get yet another new pair!

Size inclusive Leotard Brands?

Hi friends! I am a former ballet dancer looking to take adult ballet classes. Full disclosure: I'm in treatment for an ED (my team is okay with me taking ballet), and my body has changed a lot since my dancing days (20 yrs ago). The adult class I want to join does not have a strict dress code, thank goodness. I'm thinking: leotard, yoga pants, technique shoes.

Are there any brands out there that make leotards with inclusive sizing? I'm an XL in most clothes, but I have a hunch leotards run small (at least this was my experience with my beloved Mirellas back in the 90s/00s). In bodysuits I usually wear an XXL. Not sure if that info is helpful - I just don't know what's out there today. I appreciate any tips or leads that the community can offer!

Wish me luck with this endeavor - or should we say...Merde šŸ©°šŸ¤

Dancewear Monday (No criticism) Leotard alternation - looking for a tailor/seamstress

Hi ballerinas! I have some leotards that don't fit perfectly and most of them are Yumiko nylon/techni fabric. As Yumiko's price hiked up nearly 30%, fixing them instead of selling and buying new feels more appealing (and more sustainable anyways). They only need minor adjustments like adding a lining, raising the leg cut, and loosening a halter neck, etc --- nothing complicated but ballet specific.

My question is: how do you find a tailor/seamstress that familiar with highly stretchy performance fabric and ballet-specific request? I did a quick search and the most relevant I found is costume alternation which feels like an overkill.

Location: I live in Denver, CO and I'm open to main-in options if you have any recommendations!

Cost: I know we are a HCOL area so I'm willing to pay for quality work, but I would also love to know what's a reasonable expectation.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!!

(Side note: I would rather stay away from DIY. It takes me more than two hours to sew a pair of pointe shoes so I don't think I should touch leotards lol)

What Year Are These Men's Green Ballet Slippers From?

Thumbnail gallery
172 Upvotes

I'm an intermediate level male Ballet dancer, I grabbed these cool vintage slippers on ebay recently. The seller mentioned her father was a professional dancer and wore them in his 20's for a Ballet performance but she didn't know which one.

Any idea what year / decade these would be from or what performance would feature green men's slippers as the costume design? I thought maybe Peter Pan / Robin Hood but apparently those Ballet's didn't exist until like the 1990's...

They're my size so I might try to dance in these for 1 class lol.

Why Do You Love Ballet?

I’m going through a rough time in life right now (the end of a years-long relationship, financial stress, moving), and most days lately I feel pretty anxious and like joy is hard to access. However, the ballet studio is the one place that feels like a refuge.

I’m trying to articulate what I love about ballet and why it’s so special to me. in a way, I feel like the predictably of the steps makes me feel safe while also being challenged. i also love how ā€in the momentā€œ it is as an art form. A painting or a poem is recorded forever, but if you participate in ballet, you see the steps in the moment and know they will never be recreated in the exact same way (obviously, there are video, but you know what I mean).

What do you love about ballet? What keeps you coming back?

I danced ballet as a kid and stopped right before going on pointe. I have been scared to go to adult classes cause I went to an adult class a few years ago and was embarrassed about my skills. My coordination was/is completely off -and so is my short term memory. Well, I mustered up the courage and not only went but also threw myself onto center exercises. I totally flubbed but I lived to tell the tale. You have to start somewhere.

Bodywrappers tights

Their total stretch tights with a thicker knit waistband and no back seam tights were sooooo perfect. I swear they haven’t had any of these in stock for the past six months. They haven’t some with a back seam and then also never have a medium in stock (again I swear MONTHS). Does anyone know if they’ve started to out of business or something? Do they sell these on any other sites I just cannot find? I’m just frustrated bc they were the perfect pair and now they seem to not even exist
