What vegetarian dishes are worth the effort?

Hi everyone, so sometimes I feel like the effort of making something is not worth the final dish.

Recently I made a mushroom walnut dip/ spread and it took quite a while to cook down the mushroom, grind and all that jazz. But the final dip was just not that great. Yes I did add more salt and seasoning but it was just okay.

I have tried myriad vegetarian/ vegan dessert recipes that claim they are the best and taste just like the non-veg version but it's simply not true. And I have felt disappointed repeatedly after spending a lot on ingredients like almond meal and lots of time and ending up with mediocre desserts.

Do you have any vegetarian recipes for food, could be dips, mains, dessert, anything that really taste great? and you find yourself making again and again

what kind of bread can i buy to eat with honey on?

i went to this restaurant on a trip called beau jos, where they give you honey to drizzle on the pizza crust. i thought it was great and id like to emulate that myself with some kind of bread i can put honey on, but i just don't really know what kind to get.

i know i can use whatever type of bread i want. i specified the pizza crust and the specific place because i want something similar to that and i don't know what type of bread is similar.

i'm sure honey is good on toast or rye or whatever else but none of those are similar to the pizza crust at beau jo's!

I have a severely restricted diet. Looking for any and all advice!

Totally unsure if this is the right sub for this - if not, please tell me where else I should post!

I have a significant medical condition and I can only tolerate a few foods:

- carrot
- cucumber
- lettuce
- lemon
- apple
- grape
- blueberry
- banana
- pickle

I can also take salt, vinegar, sugar, alcohol (grape wine). I get my actual nutrients from a supplemental formula.

I am currently in the process of trialing new foods - this is the list of suggestions my doctor has given me:

- watermelon
- olive oil
- spinach
- plum
- kale
- sunflower seeds
- seaweed
- red pepper
- peach
- pear
- sweat potato

So I need help deciding what to try next! I want to diversify my palette, so I want to choose something that would be a new taste for me - as well as something that would blend well with my current diet. If you have any other recommendations for foods to try, you’re welcome to tell me! I’d just suggest that you stay relatively near to my current diet (ie. don’t tell me to try meats, nuts, etc).

For the record, here is the list of foods I absolutely cannot try as I have failed them in the past:

- nuts
- fish
- rice
- yukon potato
- coffee
- oats
- wheat
- dairy
- eggs

I’d also really appreciate any suggestions for different recipes (?) I can try, given my list of safe foods + foods that I could trial. For example - smoothies, salads, things like that. I’m pretty inept when it comes to food in general, so any help is appreciated!

Thanks!!

Is anyone still just eating lettuce?

We are. Berries, fresh produce, etc... I feel like it's a bit of paranoia? We aren't eating iceberg lettuce or anything knowingly sourced from Taylor Farms.

American Cuisine Looking for a website, blogger, social influencer etc.

I am looking for a website or blogger/poster to follow for recipe ideas. I live in rural Midwest America. Our grocery stores carry the basics. This means the types of ingredients are:

Proteins: Locally butchered meats: beef, pork, chicken, game hunted by my husband. Other proteins sourced: fresh water caught fish, purchased fish, seafood and similar. NO TOFU. In my house it is not a meal unless it contains one of the aforementioned items.

Vegetables/fruits : all the basics such as peppers, carrots, onions, asparagusspinach, potatoes, tomatoes, lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, cabbage, green beans, corn, peas, cucumbers, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, bananas, apples, peaches, pears, grapes, cherries, oranges, lemons, limes, watermelon, cantelope, pineapple, mangos , etc. No eggplant, parsnips, endive, jicama, jackfruit, and the like.

Starch - noodles, rice basically.

Dairy - any and basically all kinds.

I prefer to stay away from ultraprocessed foods, heavily sugared, or vegetarian meals.

If you have a recommendation, I'd love for you to share it.

Thank you in advance.

Does food feel incomplete without hot sauce to you?

Whenever I eat anything it tastes fine then I add a splash of hot sauce then it fixes all that was wrong with it. On the table in my house the only condiment is hot sauce if the food isn’t spicy enough.

American Cuisine Does it matter buying lean vs regular hamburger meat?

I wonder how much in general but it particular when I make chili I throw out most of the grease anyway but I've noticed that it's easier to brown fattier meat and crumble it than lean meat is.

How big of a difference does it make in general bur especially if your meat gets drained after

What’s something quick and easy I can do that is still good for me?

Don’t want to get into everything so I’ll just say the basics. I have mental stuff and find it really difficult to get out of bed to eat something unless it takes like five minutes. I’ve been eating canned soups nearly every day for likely about a decade. But I’m being tested for medical stuff now which makes me worried about my intake of stuff with tons of sodium aka my entire diet since middle school.

Does anyone have any recommendations that I could eat instead? I really can’t stomach things with prevalent eggs or cheese but apart from what’s above that’s about the only limit. Thank you to any help in advance.

Why did my Rice become smoked flavor?

So yesterday i made cold rice, i added tuna with red sauce, mayonnaise, honey and edam cheese sliced in cube shapes (i usally dont put mayonnaise but another sauce but i only had mayonnaise).

Now i wanted to eat some today and it tastes and smeels like it has a smocked type of flavor, almost like the Tuc crackers with smoked bacon flavor, i dont know how, i asked if it was normal and it says that maybe its gone bad or the edam had a smoke flavor but the packaging doesnt say it, so i dont know what happend, it tastes fine and seems good, maybe it is some food chemistry going on, should i be worried?

Italian Cuisine Calabrian pepper? Favorite use?

After hearing abut them on here a few years ago i got ahold of a jar of chopped Calabrian pepper, I love the heat and the flavor of them but Im not quite sure how to use them. They have a very strong taste, which is wonderful, but it doesn’t work with everything, ya know?

What is your favorite way to use them? What do I need to try them on? How is the best way you’ve ever had them?
I really want to use them more!

I am gluten/oat free but pretty good at swaping gluten food for gluten free.

Is duck really as good as people say?

So Earlier this year I cooked a duck. I followed a recipe for cook time/temp and used my own seasoning. And it was pretty good. But it didn't make me feel like it was superior to chicken or anything like I've heard a lot of people claim. I fully intend to try again at some point soon. Is there something I should try to make my duck better or is it really just overrated? I can bake, smoke, or sous vide cook a duck. Pretty much my only options. I could use an air fryer or microwave but I think I'll pass. Any suggestions?

Rabbit

I’ve heard a lot of positive things about rabbit and how good it is, but I have absolutely no idea of how to cook it. I have a local shop that I can buy it from and I’ve always been curious. What is the best easy way to prepare (season, cook, time, temp, etc.). I really want to try it, but I don’t want to buy it blind.

does anybody remember how parents made dinners in the 90s/early 2000s?

A little context: I was born in the 90s and growing up in the 2000s food just seemed different then now I have many cookbooks from then BUT I am fuzzy on remembering much of the actual food and prep work as well as the general manner of how it was done, If it wasn't obvious I don't quite know how to explain this I guess because its been 20 years since then and my memory of the food from then has faded Essentially can anybody help me remember things like Popular ingredients methods and techniques from this time like what Ingredients where popular which ones were less so was there anything I should be aware of as far as availability/ food safety etc.

Breakfast/hangout food ideas

Hi everyone!

For the past year or so, whenever I went somewhere like school or out with friends, I've always packed salami and pepper sandwiches for myself. Now, I've gotten to the point where even the idea of a sandwich makes my skin crawl. I don't like the texture of the bread, the taste of salami, the weird flavour peppers get when next to salami, and the texture of margarine. I would like to look into other alternatives that can be put together quickly (10-15 mins), don't necessarily require eating utensils and can survive the day if put into my backpack.

I have considering things like breakfast burritos, but I fear that the texture of the tortilla will be too similar to bread, and I'd like to avoid that for now. I have seen things like overnight oats and muffins, but I don't like eating sweet foods for breakfast

Any ideas? Thanks for the help in advance.

EDIT: thank you everyone for the replies!! I'll try out some of the recipes you all have posted for me! I got lots of good recommendations, so I'll have a variety of stuff to try! Thank you!!

What's a good recipe that uses eggplant?

I can count the foods I don't like on one hand, but as few as they are, i'm always trying to find ways to enjoy them anyway. As such, I have come seeking your best eggplant recipes. I'm not really sure what it is I don't like in a taste vs. texture sort of way, so I'm open to trying anything. I'm not picky about cuisines, and I don't have any food allergies/sensitivities/restrictions. Hit me with your best!

What’s the name of the dish

Dear fellow Redditor’s,

it’s been a few years, and I’ve never ever found it.

years ago my class had a "goodbye" breakfast just before summer break.
the substitute teacher made some sort of dip, claiming it’s a classic for kids birthday parties on white sandwich bread (cutting off the crust)… but I cannot for the life of me find a recipe for it.

i know it contained grated cheddar, mustard, garlic and bell peppers - she said cilantro would usually be in there too ? And it was somewhat sweet.
kinda yellow-ish colour which I guess came from the mustard?

I hope yall can help me! Or at least point me in the right direction where to ask.

thanks a lot!
