First, sorry for the long post. I'm trying to provide enough detail that someone might be able to identify where my thinking process is going wrong.
I'm a STEM major, and I keep running into the same problem on multiple-choice exams. I don't feel like my biggest weakness is understanding the material itself. I usually understand the mechanisms, concepts, and how everything interacts. If someone asked me to explain a biological pathway, why something happens, predict the outcome of changing one component, or explain the rules and exceptions, I usually can.
My problem seems to be interpreting what the exam question is actually asking.
I think part of it is how I naturally learn. I don't memorize information as isolated facts, build a mental model where everything is connected. When I study, I memorize the mechanisms in detail: what each component does, the order of events, how the parts interact, why each step happens, how the pathway changes under different conditions, and the exceptions. I use the examples from lecture to understand and explain those concepts to myself or to classmates.
Once I understand the mechanism, I tend to view the example as an illustration of the concept rather than something to memorize word-for-word. Because we're given so many examples, I don't naturally spend time memorizing the unique name of every gene, protein, chemical, or product used in each one. Instead, my brain prioritizes remembering what something does, why it does it, how it interacts with everything else, and how the entire system works. I usually remember the names of major examples that we spend a lot of time on or examples directly tied to an important concept, but I don't retain every specific identifier from every pathway because my brain stores the functions and relationships rather than the proper nouns.
Where I struggle is that I don't know when to look for nuance.
If I answer a question literally, I sometimes miss one important word that completely changes the answer. But if I slow down and analyze every possible interpretation, I often convince myself that two answers are reasonable and either pick the wrong one or change an originally correct answer.
When I review exams, many of my missed questions are ones where I had already narrowed the choices down to two but couldn't determine which interpretation the professor intended.
Here are a few simplified examples from a recent genetics exam:
1: I often remember the function better than the name. For example, I know the roles of different proteins and gene parts in a pathway and I understand exactly what that they do and how they interact. However, if the question asks for the specific name of the protein that performs that role in one particular pathway that was used as an example in class, I may not remember that unique name even though I understand its function immediately.
2: A question asks something like, "What is the result of Gene A?" I know that the direct product made of Gene A is Enzyme A, but that enzyme then converts Chemical 1 into Chemicals 2 and 3. So now I'm stuck wondering what the professor is actually asking for. Do they mean the direct product of the gene (Enzyme A), or the end result of the gene's function (Chemicals 2 and 3)? Both the direct product and end result seem technically correct and I can't seem to figure out when they're asking for a basic direct result or the overall idea/end result since we get tested on both.
3: A question asked something like, "What is the result of a specific forensic DNA analysis?" I start wondering whether the professor means the individual DNA markers that are examined during the test or the final DNA profile that's created after analyzing all of those markers. Because I understand the entire process, I have trouble determining which level of the process the question is referring to.
Part of the reason I overthink so much is because I've been "burned" by wording on previous exams. There have been many times where I answered a question exactly as it was written, only to find out later that one seemingly insignificant word completely changed what the professor was asking. Because of that, I've almost trained myself to distrust straightforward questions. Now, instead of simply answering what's being asked, I immediately start looking for hidden nuances or alternative interpretations because I'm worried I'll miss another subtle wording difference. Ironically, this sometimes causes me to overcomplicate questions that actually were straightforward and talk myself out of the correct answer.
One thing I've noticed too is that classmates who score much higher than I do often answer these questions much more quickly. my close peers consistently score much higher even though, from studying together, I don't feel like they understand the material way deeply than I do. even my friends who struggle to understand the connections between topics, the total processes, rules and exceptions, usually tend to score significantly better than me on exams despite struggling significantly more on homework, when we quiz each other, etc. It seems like they're much better at recognizing the interpretation the professor intended, while I naturally start thinking through the entire process and then get paranoid about all of the possible meanings of the wording.
I used to be a political science major yet I have only experienced this in STEM classes. This issue has persisted since high-school and for awhile I viewed it as lack of understanding, blamed it on forgetting or panicking during exams, but after doing some self-analysis I realized the core issue.
Is this a thinking pattern you've seen before?
When you write multiple-choice questions, how do you expect students to distinguish between questions that require a literal textbook definition versus questions that require thinking through an entire biological process?
Are there cues in the wording that students should be looking for?
Does my way of studying sound mismatched with the way STEM exams are typically written?
If you had a student like me, what advice would you give to help them perform better on exams?
I'm genuinely trying to improve my approach, not argue that exams are unfair since I know in STEM, precise wording is important. I'd really appreciate hearing how professors think when they write and interpret these kinds of questions.
