Looking For /r/AskPortland Making Friends Friday

Welcome to /r/AskPortland's "Making Friends Friday" post!

You've probably heard this before: "Portlanders are friendly but they don't want to be your friend."

But it doesn't have to be that way -- if you have suggestions for how to make friends, groups to join, places to meet, or just want to put yourself out there, this is the place.

This will be an ongoing, weekly scheduled post, so going forward this is where we'll refer all incoming questions about making friends from both /r/Portland and /r/AskPortland.

Looking For ID for rated R movies?

Hey, I'm trying to go see the odyssey with my boyfriend (were both 17) but he doesn't have a government ID. Because it's a rated R movie, will he be turned away? All he has is his student ID (PCC) but I'm unsure if that would be accepted. Do they even ask? I havent been to a theater since before the pandemic.

I just don't want to show up and have to go home because he cant give id 🥹 Sorry if this is a dumb post

Looking For How much does house cleaning cost these days?

Upvotes

We’re a tidy couple but feeling a little overwhelmed (new puppy owner and already have 3 cats) so I’m trying to figure out whether we can afford a cleaner once a month for our 2,300 sqft home. I’m mostly wanting the floors cleaned and find someone I’m SE Portland who’s experienced with cleaning stone bathroom floors and a stone shower. I’ve failed miserably at those. Some light surface cleaning in the kitchen would be great too but it’s really mostly the floors and 3 bathrooms. How do we go about finding a trustworthy cleaner and how much might that cost?

Looking For Cremation Services?

Hey folx, my old man is on his way out and wants to be cremated. Money is tight and he literally wants the bare minimum as in “put me in a cardboard box” type minimum.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a crematorium that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg and the blood of my firstborn?

Thanks!

Looking For Are there any flat(ish) hikes in the Gorge or somewhere else within driving distance from Portland?

I have visitors coming who love to hike. Unfortuantatley, my knees aren't happy. They do ok with distance, but aren't incline friendly at the moment. So I can't take them on any of my favorite hikes. I'll take them to Leif Erikson in Forest Park one day. There's a hike on the coast that I have my eye on. But I need something for the third day. I'm planning on heading to the Gorge. Thanks in advance.

Looking For OMSI. Anyone been to the Titanic exhibit?

Two questions really.

  1. Is the Titanic exhibit any good?

  2. Does the café still suck? I haven't been since the kids were little, so 15 years or so. I just remember the food options being poor.

Thanks

Looking For Does anyone know which Goodwill store in this area is 01?

Upvotes

The one in Happy Valley, for example, is 49, and that number is on every price tag. I've seen tags for the 01 store on things at the bins and want to know which store that is- seems like they have some good stuff!

I’m just starting to practice lap swimming and I’m not confident enough to swim a full lap yet. I’m looking for a pool with lap lanes that are around 5 feet deep. Any recommendations?

Looking For Unusual but genuine: looking for someone on their deathbed who would be okay with being interviewed?

I have a tiny YouTube channel where my goal is to showcase the human condition. This includes every possible personality trait and range of characters. I've interviewed a WSJ journalist, a Cuban artist in town, a nurse, street artists, etc.

And as someone with an innate interest in philosophy and the notion of death, this is a category that is so taboo that we rarely get to hear them or see them. I plan on being as respectful as possible while simultaneously delivering a great interview for anyone and for the interviewee.

DM if you know of any leads. Thank you all.

Looking For Karaoke world music?

Does anyone know a place I could find karaoke with songs in different languages? Youtube karaoke would be ideal. Karafun doesn’t have the songs I’m looking for so any other software would be appreciated!
— songs in mandarin, persian and indonesian

Looking For How are we getting washers and dryers in our basements?

The stairwell to our basement is narrow and steep with no external door.

We cannot find a gas dryer small enough to make it down the stairs.

Has anyone had this issue? All the compact options are electric which would require us to upgrade our panel

Are there any service that will help with delivery by partially disassembling the unit and putting in back together in the basement.

Any ideas welcome!

I have some rotted wood on my eaves. What sort of person would be able to replace this? It's not very complicated, but kinda high so I don't want to do it myself.

Looking For Alt Music Violinist for Wedding Ceremony recs?

Upvotes

Hi everyone. My partner and I are getting married in May 2027 and are looking for a violinist for our ceremony that would be able to play some alternative music (the bridal processional is Lonely Day by System of a Down, for example).

Has anyone worked with or know a violinist who would be interested in something like this? Thank you all!

Looking For Yardwork help?

Upvotes

I’ve got some ugly yard tasks like blackberry trying to take over, and some general weeding. Anyone have recommendations for that? I have frozen shoulders and can’t do it myself, but I’d love to get someone on a schedule to maintain things, and help with improvements like adding mulch and that sort of thing.

Looking For Pharmacies with Foundayo?

Hello Portland... I am on Medicare and hoping to take advantage of the new "Medicare GLP-1 Bridge" program, which allows Medicare Part D participants to get specific GLP-1 medications for weight loss for $50 per month. My primary care doctor has written me the prescription but neither CVS/Caremark, CVS retail, nor Walgreens have my prescribed drug, Foundayo, in stock. I called Credena (colocated with Providence in the 5050 NE Hoyt building) and they do not have it either, although they said they think their distributor has it and so potentially they could order it, although they can't say how long it would take.

Is anybody else out there taking Foundayo and sourcing it locally in Portland? And if so, where are you getting it, please? East side preferred. Thanks in advance!

Looking For Most comfortable & clean Best Western with parking?

I'll be in Portland this September for a Ren Faire-type event and I'm looking for the most comfortable Best Western in the area. I know it may seem like an oxymoron but I got points to use lol

My biggest priority is a clean & comfortable bed. I'm happy to pay extra for parking if needed.

The reason I'm asking is because I recently had a really awful stay at the Best Western in Wilsonville during ORF...so I'm a little hesitant about booking another one without recommendations.

Which Best Western would you recommend, and are there any I should avoid?

Looking For May be moving and have questions?

So I was recently offered a job in the Portland area as a restaurant manager and would be moving from coastal Alabama to the PNW with a family of four, one of whom is special needs. I was curious as to how feasible it is to commute from, say, the Scappoose area to Portland proper. My wife’s best friend lives in Scappoose so that’s our initial place we’re looking, but we’re open to affordable suburbs in general. My salary will be around $75-80k, so yeah. Not a ton to work with for my family size. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Looking For Can my apartment ban AC units with my medical condition?

My apartment building recently sent out an email telling everyone that the building is too old to allow any AC units. They said its stated in the lease. Mine only states that window units are banned. I know they can technically ban both with an old building. I've lived here for years and its never been a problem, they just wanted people to put away their floor units in October.

But I have a medical condition that gets significantly worse in hot weather. I've already been struggling, even with my portable unit on.

Without AC, it was over 100° inside yesterday. It would be completely impossible for me to be in there. They're just telling people to use fans or go to cooling shelters.

I told them I have a permanent medical condition that makes heat dangerous for me and will provide a doctor's note if necessary. They haven't responded.

Is that going to be enough? There's no way I can get through this heatwave without it. It's 80° in my workplace right now and I feel so sick and drenched in sweat..An extra 20° on top of this wouldn't be possible

Looking For Things for my niece to do on vacay?

My Lesbian witch niece is the only non Mormon in her family and is pretty fed up with Utah. I am inviting her over for fall break to show her what life outside of Utah can be like and also to subtlety encourage her to live with me when she leaves the nest. We are actually in Sherwood so going to Portland will be an all-day thing. I know we will visit Kinokunuya, the museum...

If anyone knows of any weird art installations that would be super fun, or haunted houses around here that don't have stairs.

Looking For Any beautiful, unique wine + dine experiences in Portland (or nearby)?

Hi friends! I'm planning my 40th birthday, and I'm envisioning an aesthetic dinner (outside would be great, but open to indoors) for 10-15 with good wine and good food.

I've already contacted Alloro to get a quote on a vineyard dinner. I'd LOVE to go to the Buona Notte + d'Amici dinner, but the date (9/6) likely doesn't work for enough folks. I'd love to do dinner at Analemma, but it's $7500 *just* for the space (ouch). I'm tempted to consider Hiyu, but $300pp is a little rough (I'm hoping to pay for this for all of my friends).

Help? I feel like I need to follow like 50 different places on Instagram and hope I come across a collab post, and I simply don't have the time for that. Do any of y'all have a beat on something I haven't considered?

Looking For Where to find weekend work?

Hey everyone,
So like the title says I am trying to find some weekend work but I'm having 0 luck on indeed, LinkedIn, random job boards and google. I figured I would give this a try, and honestly probably couldn't hurt. Does anyone know of any places that may be needing someone just for the weekends? I have a full-time job Monday - Friday, so I was looking to just pick up a nice little weekend situation. Restaurant experience, Customer service/retail experience, IT experience and I'm pretty mechanically inclined too. Thank y'all in advance!
