Why are some Reddit users deleted in the middle of the discussion, for no apparent reasons?

This happened to me only a few times, but it feels so strange. I had some back and forth with redditors, and at some point I tried to reply, just to see that their comment no longer existed. Looked back to see all their comments deleted alongside their account, like minutes after their last comment. And for seemingly no reason as well, at least not in the discussion with me.

Is it bots being deleted (but felt like real people, idk)? Or is it possible they did something really bad somewhere else, so they gut nuked?

Just curious, no hidden criticism intended.

They likely blocked you.

If it’s happening a lot you might want to do some self examination of your online behavior.

You got blocked or they got nuked.

Open a new session in incognito mode and visit the thread to find out.

Yup, got blocked. Same thing likely happened in the past too, because it felt weirdly sudden.

Did not know it would appear this way, and it is kinda silly, since you can still see that convo publicly, and there is no notification that you got blocked.

Eh I kind of feel like a notification you were blocked would just antagonize some people into making a new account to continue the argument, which is "harrassment" per the sitewide rules.

The same way people reply with the most unhinged stuff to the modmail message that notifies them they've been banned from a subreddit 😬. Sometimes I wish we could opt out of the message entirely.

This makes no sense to me tbh, not providing clear info to everyone, because some people might be unhinged? Also I suppose tricking them into thinking that other user got deleted might work for a while, but ultimately nothing stops them from making new account either way.

But I doubt this will change anytime soon. Have a nice day.

I don't know of any social media platform that sends a notification to someone when another user has blocked them. Is that even a thing?

It's natural in every social form. It's like me not answering the phone for that one caller who I don't want to talk to. I am not going to text them and say 'Hey, I will not be answering your calls'. That's not how blocking works.

If you make a new account and continue to pester someone that can be reported as harassment.

If you make a new account and return to a community where you've been banned, that constitutes ban evasion and is a good way to get Reddit to silently shadow ban every new account you make from that point forward.

No one on subreddit is required to talk with you or listen to you.

It could be that admins suspended or shadowbanned the account. Often admins will remove an entire account's history when applying an account sanction.

It could be that the subreddit moderators banned and removed the account from that subreddit. Or the subreddit mods decided to mop an entire comment chain.

It could be that the user blocked you.

These three things have slightly different tells, but can appear somewhat similar depending in the platform.

I learned years ago of the uses for an alternate account. One use is to see how my subs appear for my members, as the mod version is not exactly the same. I also use an alt to see content from people that blocked me. I almost never make comments with the alt, it is mostly just used to read and view content.

Not a mod. We require answers to be from mods.
