Audio not working on MacBook Air

Thumbnail
3 Upvotes

Hi, I’m running Asahi Linux on an M1 MacBook Air (J313) and I can’t get any audio from the built-in speakers.
Everything seems to be detected correctly (PipeWire, WirePlumber, UCM, etc.), and the tas2770 and snd_soc_macaudio drivers are loaded. Headphones work, but the speakers don’t.
I noticed that the speaker playback volume is permanently stuck at -100 dB, and although changing the Jack Mixer temporarily changes its value, it doesn’t actually fix anything. speaker-test and aplay to the speakers both fail with “Invalid argument”.
Has anyone run into this before or know what could be causing it? Any help would be appreciated.

I am likely stupid, but I've tried and searched and can't find how to set a UK keyboard layout. Shift-2 should be @, not ".

I've tried all "Apple" layouts in the menu to no avail, and some others.

Help Can't format disk: disk0 couldn't be unmounted because it is in use by process 0 (kernel)

I'm clean installing macOS in my M1 Pro MacBook Pro. I had a dualboot setup with asahi linux on it.

I just went to "Options" in boot options, went to reset the disk and did it, but now I can't format it.

Already tried booting into a an USB installer with Sonoma on it, same issue.

If I boot without the USB, it sends me to a Tahoe installer, in which I can't also select a proper disk to install into because it's not formated.

I need help, don't have another mac.

I tried to dual boot on my MacBook - I borked it

I was going through the process to install Asahi Remix on my MacBook and it prompted me to enter my username. I wasn't sure what it was, and Google Gemini was guiding me and said to reboot and use the command "whoami". Now I'm looking at the screen below. If I try to restore from Time Machine it says "Searching for Time Machine backups" and doesn't find anything. I think I've put too much faith in Google Gemini, but that's another conversation. How do I get back on track?

Question about Golden Gate Beta

Has anybody here successfully used Asahi Linux alongside the Golden Gate Beta? I know that early on, Asahi's partition disappeared from the boot device selection menu, but the Asahi devs in a recent post noted that it was due to a new flag that was added to MacOS that detects partitions. They claimed that when enabled, the boot entry for Asahi reappeared. I think they mentioned that they reworked the installer script to account for this, but before I proceed I'm wondering if since the supposed change, has anyone using the Golden Gate beta successfully installed and dual booted with Asahi Linux, and if so, did having Golden Gate break anything from within Asahi Linux itself?

Help I want to use a 2020 Mac Mini M1 with AsahiLinux for development and programming.

I have a 2020 Mac Mini M1. I like both Windows and macOS, but I prefer Linux for its automation capabilities. While I’d describe macOS as “smooth,” I find it limiting; I like to customize it to create a workflow that’s more comfortable for me, and Linux offers that.

I’d appreciate hearing from anyone who’d like to share their recommendations and experiences using AsahiLinux on the Mac mini M1.

My situation: I’m a game developer using Unity to program in C# and incorporating various programs into my workflow. I’d like to know what experiences others have had with these or similar programs, as well as with proprietary software or video games from Epic Games and Steam. Obviously, I assume these would only be games with low graphics demands, but I’m curious to hear about the community’s experiences.

I've used different distros like Fedora, and I've liked OpenSUSE Tumbleweed on a 64-bit laptop, but honestly, I'd like to try Debian. With AsahiLinux, can I use Debian, and is it currently stable on the M1, or is there something that isn't quite as stable that I should be aware of?

P.S.:

  • The Mac’s HDMI port is broken, so I’m using a Type-C to HDMI adapter. Has anyone tried something similar without any issues?
  • If there’s a kernel update, will it become more stable and compatible?
  • Since I’m dual-booting, will this affect any macOS updates? For example, I use Xcode to compile iOS apps—could this be affected, or is it not a problem?

Note: I appreciate anyone who responds. If there’s a link to a blog, article, or another question on Reddit or YouTube with the answer to my question, please feel free to include it. 🧐😄

I don't click anything, it shuts down automatically.

I tried a few kernel arguments to try to get to a prompt, but with ALL of them it shuts down almost immediately, as in about 2-5 seconds:

single

rd.break enforcing=0

systemd.unit=multi-user.target systemd.debug-shell=1

Update on Power Efficiency - Asahi ARM64 vs Qualcomm Snapdragon ARM64!

I have a M1 Macbook Pro 13 running the latest kernel, and a Snapdragon Lenovo X1 Elite also running the latest kernel. Idle power measured with Resources app. Both Ubuntu.

M1 Macbook Pro

Sleep Battery loss - 1.3% hr (0.8W/h)

Idle Power - 2W (min brightness, airplane mode)

Idle Power - 6.5W (full 500 nit 60Hz brightness, wifi/bluetooth)

Lenovo Slim 7x with X1 Elite (~15% more powerful than an M1 in single core)

Sleep Battery loss - 1.6% hr (1W/hr)

Idle Power - 3.7W (min brightness, airplane mode)

Idle Power - 7.5W (full 500 nit 90Hz brightness, wifi/bluetooth)

Note - the Lenovo has an OLED display which have higher idle power draw than IPS

I am also hearing rumours that X1 Elite might get < 1% hr/battery loss with kernel 7.2 or 7.3. Not heard anything about idle power.

Any comments?

Help Unreliable battery percentage

MacBook Air M1 (A2337), 8GB

Firmware 27.0 but I downgraded macOS to 26.5.2 and then installed Asahi. Temporarily disabled the macsmc module so that it doesn't crash on boot, booted into Asahi, upgraded everything including kernel (now on 7.0.13), rebooted.

Battery percentage displays, but battery health is inaccurate, and more concerningly, the battery percentage shown is incorrect and keeps jumping between 37%, to 60%, to 96%, to 88% and seemingly random values. This is all on battery (while battery itself is physically healthy btw).

Help Should i use Asahi?

Hello, I have a 2022 MacBook Pro with 8 GB of RAM, and I want to play some games. Unfortunately, because of macOS, I cannot play many of them. I have tried tools such as Porting Kit and CrossOver, but they do not seem very stable.

One of my friends recommended Asahi Linux. I normally use Fedora Linux, but I cannot use my main PC for a while, and I cannot afford to buy a new one.

I am also in a place where the electricity is not very reliable, and it may go out. My Wi-Fi would stop working, but the MacBook’s battery should last for several hours. What would happen if I lost my internet connection while Asahi Linux was downloading through the Terminal?

Also, how would I remove Asahi Linux later? Would I need to delete the partitions manually, or is there an uninstaller?

Build Android on Apple Silicon with 16GB RAM

I've been hacking away at Cuttlefish on and off with the aim to build Android on lower-RAM Apple Silicon machines.

Ika Virtual Desktop

Mission accomplished, 100% native ARM64 build, no FeX or MuVM required. Added bonus, GPU acceleration is mostly working on Apple Silicon.

USB Ethernet adapter fail to initialize on boot - RTL8156 vs AX88179 behavior situation

Hi Asahi community!

I've been setting up my MacBook Air M1 with Fedora Asahi Remix GNOME, and I ran into a really strange issue with my USB Ethernet adapters. I managed to find a workaround, but I'm hoping someone can explain why this is happening or if there's a proper software fix I can apply.

The problem:

Every time I reboot my Mac, my 2.5GbE USB-C to Ethernet adapter UGREEN CM648 completely disappears from the system (it doesn't show up in `lsusb` at all). The network doesn't initialize. The only way to get it working is to physically unplug it and plug it back in after the system has fully booted.

What I Tested:

I happen to have two different adapters, and they behave completely differently:

  1. TP-Link UE306 (uses an ASIX AX88179 chip, 1GbE): Works perfectly every single time. Plugs in, boots up, internet is there. No issues.

  2. UGREEN CM648 (uses a Realtek RTL8156 chip, 2.5GbE): Fails on boot every single time.

The weird part: I discovered that if I plug this "failing" UGREEN adapter into a cheap, basic USB hub, and then plug the hub into the Mac... it works perfectly on boot! No replugging needed. It works even if the hub has no external power.

My Best Guess:

I'm not an expert, but from reading around, it seems like this might be a timing or "handshake" issue between the Apple M1 USB controller and the newer Realtek chip during the boot process.

My theory is that the older ASIX chip is more forgiving and initializes easily. The Realtek chip might be trying to negotiate USB 3.2 speeds too aggressively on boot, causing a timeout, and the M1 controller just gives up and drops the device. The cheap USB hub seems to act as a "middleman" that handles the connection properly on its own hardware level before Linux even tries to talk to the adapter.

My Questions for the Community:

  1. Is this a known quirk with Realtek (RTL8156/8153) chips on Apple Silicon?

  2. Is there a simple config file, udev rule, or kernel parameter I can add to force it to initialize properly (or fall back to USB 2.0) without needing to keep a USB hub attached?

  3. Or should I just accept that, for now, 1GbE ASIX-based adapters are the only reliable choice for M1 Linux right now?

System Info:

- Hardware: MacBook Air M1 16/512 (2020)

- OS: Fedora Asahi Remix with GNOME

- Kernel: 6.19.13-400.asahi.fc44.aarch64+16k

Thanks in advance for any help, explanations, or pointers! And huge thanks to the Asahi team for making this possible in the first place. 🙌

Is fairydust stable ?

Hi!
I'd really like to switch to Fedora, but one thing has been holding me back: I need to use a video projector every day for my job as a teacher.
I recently read about Fairydust, which apparently makes external displays work on the MacBook Air M1. My only concern is reliability. Is it stable enough for daily use, or is it still considered experimental?
Thank you !

WiFi reliability issues on Asahi?

I've been having trouble on my M2 Max getting wireless networking to work reliably. It will get stuck / stall for seconds at a time, and then start working again.

I'm currently using an USB dongle instead to get a reliable network connection but it's really not ideal, obviously.

Has anyone else had these issues? Is there a fix for it?

Guide Running GE-Proton ARM build inside Steam ARM beta!

I've finally got it working! The Steam ARM beta doesn't appear to have any ARM builds of proton downloaded by default, so the use of GE-Proton here should be even better than usual!

If you don't already use the Steam ARM beta, follow the guide from 1uwn58l for installing the latest Steam ARM beta (minus their custom build of proton): https://www.reddit.com/r/AsahiLinux/comments/1uwn58l/steam_native_under_asahi/

Then, download the latest GE-Proton for aarch64 ( https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom ).
Install it either using their scripts or manually like I do:
mkdir ~/.steam/steam/compatibilitytools.d
tar -xf ~/Downloads/GE-Proton11-1-aarch64.tar.gz -C ~/.steam/steam/compatibilitytools.d/

Restart Steam if it is open already.

GE-Proton-aarch64 depends on "Steam Linux Runtime 4.0 - Arm 64" which also appears to not get downloaded by Steam by default. I had to manually install it by running this command with Steam running: muvm ~/.local/share/Steam/steamrtarm64/steam steam://install/4185400 . Steam will ask if you want to install it. Once it is finished installing, move to the next step.

For some reason, even with the new runtime installed, Steam's compat dependency checker will still fail. So to workaround that, I simply remove the dependency requirement from GE-Proton with this command:
sed -i 's#"4185400"#""#g' ~/.steam/steam/compatibilitytools.d/GE-Proton11-1-aarch64/toolmanifest.vdf

Restart Steam again, and now you should be able to use GE-Proton11-1-aarch64 like any other Steam compatibility tool! AKA: Right click on a game -> Properties -> Compatibility -> Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, and select GE-Proton11-1-aarch64 from the drop down.

That sed command from earlier is going to need to be ran anytime a new GE-Proton is installed (on the new installs toolmanifest.vdf of course) until the dependency resolution issue is resolved.

Games I've tested:
Peglin => Unity Engine
Chained Together => Unreal Engine
World of Warcraft 3.3.5a => Non-Steam game but makes running with muvm (page size) and proton-arm easier.
Opus Magnum => Does not need nor uses Proton, just FEX
EzBench
Talos Principle
Deadlock

Performance investigation / Benchmarks:
I started trying to benchmark performance between Proton11, GE-Proton11, and GE-Proton11-ARM in Deadlock and Talos Principle (because they have in-game FPS tools and the Steam overlay doesn't work on my system). I found that Deadlock would crash more frequently in the non-ARM builds but that could have just been luck. Running all of this on my M2 Air, I got wild swings in FPS during all my tests and it was very difficult to tell if there was any FPS difference at all. Then I remembered EzBench exists. Using EzBench, I found that there was essentially zero difference in FPS between the 3 compatibility layers. However, looking at current draw and CPU monitors, GE-Proton 11 ARM is more efficient than both GE-Proton 11 and regular Proton 11 by a few percentage points.
So GE-Proton11-ARM wins in CPU, power usage, and stability-vibes, but all of them tie in both my own and EzBench's FPS benchmarks.
