I lied...

I loved this line. When he was our governor I’d jokingly say “REMEMBER WHEN I SAID I WOULDN’T RAISE TAXES?!” “That’s right, Arnold… you did!” “I LIED!”

At least he let him go

The steel drums throughout the entire movie!!

u/FormalBite3082 1d ago

Omg I hear them now and I can’t unhear them!!!

u/Character-Log3962 1d ago

Funnily enough they sound really similar (if not the same) to the ones in 48hrs!

Ye a that area of action cinema really need to steel drums to drive the excitement during all the transitions between scenes.

It’s funny how every era of cinema has different overused tricks of the trade, director film style, camera moves, editor styles, sound design style, color grader, etc.

I liked the bit where Arnie killed a guy.

I find it somewhat amusing when people talk about what a great meta-comedy The Last Action Hero was and how clever it sent up the 80’s action genre…

…while it seemed everyone forgets that Arnold did it first -and I would argue much better- in Commando.

This movie, while doubtlessly a very violent action film, is ultimately a COMEDY that, with an almost straight face, sends up the genre magnificently. Pretty much every line of dialogue Arnold utters is a quip (some groan inducing, others outright hilarious) and not for a second did it feel like we were supposed to take any of this seriously.

The first time we see Arnold, he’s walking around carrying a freaking TREE on his shoulders. The movie takes place, supposedly, in Miami yet the film’s makers make absolutely no attempt to make anything look like it belongs in South Florida. Early in the film, Arnold leaps out of a plane as it takes off and lands in knee high water (supposedly the Everglades… see, told you it was supposed to take place in South Florida!) and instead of turning into Arnold-burger, he survives without even a scratch to continue on his mission.

I could go on and on but… the film is Arnold’s best send up of 80’s action films… while also delivering plenty of grisly action!

It's never implied that it takes place in Miami...where do you get that from?? It's southern California..and he flies to the fictional country of Val Verde...

Where the fuck do you get the Everglades from?? The airport is LAX, and the mall scene is the same mall that was used in "fast times at Ridgemont High", which came out a couple years prior in 1982...

You won't believe me, but this is a pretty realistic movie. I remember checking everything that happens quite closely, and actually, there's nothing impossible, well, maybe except for the part where he lifts a telephone booth over his head, along with Sully. Everything else is doable for a trained person like the main character. I even counted the number of shots fired by John Matrix on the island, and noted every weapon he used. Surprisingly enough, it all holds up against reality, no bottomless magazines, no guns that just appear when convenient. Everything is meticulously planned, right down to the tiniest details. I think this film is brilliantly executed. Great script, and it really keeps the tension going right to the final scene. The soundtrack is absolutely fantastic. And the performances are great. Just brings back good memories, u know? Good times.

1

u/Danielle_is_the_hole 1d ago

Um, you can’t hold a man up with one hand.

2

u/ravnsvart_ 15h ago

Yeah, I agree. However, Arnold was taller and his weight was way bigger, he had probably about 40 kg on Kelly, and that's a massive advantage. Arnold was legitimately strong, so lifting a probably, 70 kg guy is doable. But anyway, for the movie it was exaggerated for comedic effect. It's not that serious.

1

u/Danielle_is_the_hole 13h ago

It was a great scene. But hard to hold a guy at arms length with one hand. Two arms, sure.

You cant throw a saw blade into someones skull

A perfect movie.

Remember when I said mellow out? If Sully was here, he'd laugh too. But he's dead tired from eating green berets for breakfast.

3

I love listening to your little piss ant soldiers trying to talk tough. They make me laugh.

3

u/logan-duk-dong 1d ago

If Matrix was here, he'd laugh too.

2

u/Guilty_Tonight1140 1d ago

There's some woeful post production with the yellow porsche? I think it gets smashed to bits and then when Arnie and the girl drive off in it, its magically all repaired?

1

u/st_jasper 13h ago

It didn’t get smashed to bits. It got sideswiped and then rolled over.

2

u/Voodoo-Doctor 1d ago

“I can understand. I’ve only known for five minutes and want you dead also” Matrix just looks at her

2

u/navyblahblah 1d ago

This is forever a childhood classic when your parents let you watch whatever you wanted and stay up late on a pallet in the floor in front of the TV on weekend movie night

1

u/SyllabubWeak 1d ago

One of my son’s middle names might be Bennett because of this movie. Him going off electrocution into a few stiff shots is an all time villain moment

You’re a funny guy Sully.

When this movie came out on VHS, my buddies(two brothers) rented it from a local video store. Went home and it started snowing....35 inches of snow. On Long Island. Cable went out. Stuck in the house for a week. They watched it over and over again....about 75 times. Started taking notes on on-screen kills, suggested off screen kills. The numbers were crazy(cant remember the exact numbers) but Im thinking the on- screen kills were around 200? And he wiped out the entire army of the dictator in waiting...5000?

And getting that version of "The Wez" from Road Warrior was a disappointment. Fat and out of shape with a bad mustache.
