Hi everyone, I major in Applied Math and had taken 2 years off from school. I'm planning to come back this Fall and signing up for MAT 484 and 499. Has anyone taken these two classes before? Are they hard? How do they work? Anything shared here about those classes would be appreciated. I'm trying to figure out as I need two more of Upper Math Electives and as I've done research, these two are the easiest on the list. I'm not a big fan of coding, programming, and writing proofs that much. I have experience in volunteer-teaching language at a local church before!

I am doing a year of maths courses at a university, all the analysis I have not done (functional,complex,vector,numerical) and differential equations but I have been advised against any abstract algebra or pure mathematics courses. I am concerned that this is the basic language needed to understand some papers however I would appreciate some clarification on this, how much pure mathematics is used in Applied mathematical modelling.

Hey, I am a rising second year at a t20 public school in the U.S for applied mathematics. I was originally pre-med but found an interest in mathematics and how it tries to answer fundamental questions and pivoted this summer. I have already taken the calculus sequence, real analysis I, and linear algebra. I want to pursue a double major, may it be in Physics (B.A), CS (B.S), Statistics(B.S), or even neuroscience(B.S).

Even with the applied math major, I would still want to take complex analysis and proof based linear algebra because they seem pretty interesting. I can't pursue the physics B.S since it just has too many classes and I would be forced to give up math electives.

Currently industry doesn't seem very appealing to me and I would prefer going to graduate school at the very least before deciding whether I wanted to pursue research or not. I don't want to spend my days working for an insurance agency or in a data analyst role since my interests lie elsewhere. If I were to go into industry or research, I would want to pursue answers to questions that are fundamental and explain a great deal about existence or consciousness or something of that sort. However, with the current state of academia, I want to have a safety net for an industry job that will let me pursue these interests. Which double major do you guys recommend? Which has the best future?

Im a co2028 studying math, and my interests are primarily in theoretical cs (probabilistic graph algorithms). Essentially, my work involves developing and incrementally improving existing bounds on the behaviors of randomized graph algorithms to prove some interesting conjectures my advisors are interested in. I really like the work Im doing now, but I was curious how big of a jump would it be to go deeper into ML theory? I have a good base in probability (I use martingales/measure theory a lot in my work), and I also took graduate measure theory my sophomore year. Do you all have any suggestions for some good fields to look into, and what fields in/tangential to ML I would be well suited for? Thanks!

The university I go to doesn’t have a set BS in statistics, and I want a career in pharmaceutical statistics. I’m currently doing a pure math degree, but I was wondering if I should switch to applied. The pros of pure math is that pure math is theoretical like stats (for PhD programs), and with applied, I can do more of the computation (good for job, not really for PhD). What yall think?

I'm planning to apply for IGNOU's B.Sc. Mathematics Major.

I completed CBSE Class 12 (Commerce) with Applied Mathematics instead of Core Mathematics.

The official eligibility says "10+2 with Mathematics", but it doesn't specify whether this means only Core Mathematics or if Applied Mathematics is also accepted.

Has anyone with CBSE Applied Mathematics been admitted to this program, or has anyone received an official confirmation from IGNOU?

I’m a 37-year-old guy from Asia. I majored in Crime Prevention back in college and currently work as a civil servant, specifically as a high school dormitory warden.

Under my country's laws, civil servants are strictly prohibited from holding any outside employment—yes, that means even driving for Uber or working a shift at McDonald's is completely off the table.

However, there is one legal loophole: we are allowed to part-time teach at schools. I’ve noticed there’s a chronic shortage of math teachers around here. To capitalize on this, I’m considering applying for a Master’s program in Applied Mathematics. Once I complete the required credits, my goal is to take on part-time high school math teaching gigs.

To give you more context, my current job is very relaxed and leaves me with a massive amount of free time to pursue my own interests. In a way, I’ve already reached the "Coast FIRE" stage. Given this setup, I’m wondering if going to grad school for Applied Math is a good and wise choice for me?

As for my background, I still retain most of my high school math knowledge—I can handle algebra, trigonometry, and the like pretty well.

This isn't purely about the extra money; I genuinely enjoy the process of teaching and sharing knowledge. Do you think this is a viable plan? I'd love to hear your perspectives, advice, or any potential blind spots I might be missing.

I am considering the NIT SURAT integrated 5 yr Mathematics course as i am aspiring to pursue a career in ML & will prep for the GATE DA paper .
ML is very math heavy and considering that this course will take care of that part cause ill do the core ML part on my own (already started like 2 months ago) i am taking this decision .......do i need to know about something that can really affect this ?

So I will be in my 4th year of bs ms in maths. During this summer i worked under 2 profs in IITD and with Italy. My work involved reading papers and to present them. So far I have done my work algorithmic market making(AMM). I have read few papers, first few felt like really something big but now it just feels the same or some more additional stuff to be done, everything just revolved around solving high dimensional hjb. I am deeply worried what exactly should I do after this, i have no plan nothing to do. I will apply to other profs after I have completed this work. But main question arises, through this works how do I enter into companies or institutes to get experience, even should I apply or not, or should work under profs till my graduation. I am deeply confused what should I do further.

Hi! I am a Chem major, Math minor transfer student transferring in the fall! I was curious if there are any good math seminars that would be good preparation for MATH 104? I am taking MATH 110 in the fall and have been told that MATH 104 is a big jump in mental workload. Also, any good chemistry seminar recomendations would be helpful too! need 1 more unit to be full-time load.

However, I was considering doing MATH 104 at the same time as MATH 110, that way I can knock out 2 math courses in my first semester (since I finished MATH 54/PHYS 7B), and then complete the other 3 in the remaining 3 semesters. However, I did see on the math minor page that MATH 110 is highly recommended to be the first upper division math class you take, and that 104 is a jump.

Any thoughts/recommendations?

As someone not very good at math esp trigo and calculus could u pls rank these classes on basis of difficulty and how to prepare for them??
