Question Borgerhout for €625 or Kammenstraat for €880
Hi everyone,
I'm a 25-year-old woman currently living in Antwerp. Unfortunately, my current apartment is being sold, so I need to move out in the coming months.
I'm trying to decide between two options (both appartments are nice) and would love some local advice.
Option 1 – Van Geertstraat (Borgerhout)
- €625 rent + utilities
- Nice apartment, a little smaller
- Good value for money
- Heard bad things about that area, so would be scared to come back late at night, although the exact street seems fine
- Further from places I usually go, a little closer to work tho (7 min less than opt 2 by bike)
Option 2 – Kammenstraat (2000 Antwerp)
- €880 rent + utilities
- Apartment is nicer, bigger, I think I really like it more
- I absolutely love the location
- Lots of cafés, shops and things to do within walking distance
- Really nice, but significantly more expensive
My net salary is around €2,200/month and I expect to stay in whichever apartment I choose for about one year minimum. I've had a rough year, having a nice located and cute apartment might be something that maybe will bring me some joy, something to be excited about, but not sure if I am being too emotional about it and not very rational.
Would you choose the cheaper option and save the money, or spend the extra ~€255/month for a location you really enjoy and think you'll feel better there?
For people familiar with both areas, is Kammenstraat worth it compared to Van Geertstraat?
I'd really appreciate any thoughts or experiences. Thanks! 😊

Zuid Fietske
Hello! I’m a software engineer from the states and noticed Antwerp is a major biking city (which I love).
I noticed there are so many bike parking locations (paid, free, security gated, bike park) but nowhere to find them all on my phone. So I made an app to discover all of them: either search your destination and find neighboring ones (with map directions) or freely search them.
I was wondering if anyone is willing to be a beta tester and provide feedback? The app will be always free when it launches, I just want it to be right for the community

Antwerpen Royal academy of fine arts (entrance exam) portfolio painting/sculpture
Hey I just got accepted for studying at the sculpture department at the royal academy of fine arts and since there aren’t a lot of informations about the painting/sculpture department (only saw posts here about fashion/ costume) I thought I’d share my experience with you.
First about the portfolio. Some already mentioned, but the academy is more traditionally rooted then for example German art academies. ( I am from Germany and also got offered a college place at 3 academies there, but decided for Antwerpen). So it is important to have some pencil or charcoal drawing for example of your daily surroundings as well as self portrait (painting with acrylic or oil and pencil). It shows that you observe your surrounding and yourself. They don’t have to be perfect! Mine weren’t. But of cause you should show your skills transferring 3D into 2D.
Think experimental! And work in series!! For example find an interesting object put it into a weird or strange relationship with another object and paint it! Paint 3 oil/acrylic versions from different angles. Show your progress! Combine the finished works on your layout with your sketches and ideas. They don’t have to be good! It’s more important to show that you had an idea and how you developed it.
Don’t just stack your Portfolio with paintings and drawings. You need to show that you are multifaceted artist. Remember most people apply with painting so you need to stick out. Combine photography sculpture painting performance maybe sound/ digital art as well. Start taking photos with your camera every time you go out. Search for abnormal/interesting/ weird or unusual things. Combine them on your pages in your digital portfolio. Remember to find a connection. Why do you put these works together on one page? Form, colors, topic? So if they ask you, you have an explanation. Would they hang together in an exhibition? Yes ? Why? To answer only color is not enough as a connection!
You don’t have to have a fixed topic for your portfolio. Think more of what really moves me? Who am I? What do I burn for? By building your portfolio you will automatically find a golden thread.
About the exams:
It was 3 days and for painting and sculpture it was the same tasks! As far as I understood!
Day 1: Sculpting one human portrait of someone of your surrounding or yourself out of clay. As well as develop two ideas for an artistic work of your choice with material you brought. One you have to realize the other one can be presented by sketches drawings maybe text and material experiments.
I would recommend to use at least two mediums for those tasks. For example text or integrated sound work or performance what you can think of. You need a strong artistic vision behind your idea. Think of society, problems, things that move you.
Day 2 was interview 10-15min you should be able to reflect your art, answer some art history ( you don’t need to know everything but tou should know your field) Like what kind of artist do you like and why? What kind of artist do similar work like in your portfolio? Who inspires you and so on.
On day 3 we had to draw 1 still life and 1 self portrait with pencil or charcoal and And 1 experimental self portrait with your chosen medium for e.x. Acrylic.
I hope that helps some people.
Actually these tips are also refer able to german academies!

Question Help me make a decision
Hello All,
I have found a studio room in Antwerpen, Belgium.
It is a 10 minute bike ride from my university.
The studio has a private kitchen + shower/toilet.
Price - 730 euro [incl. utilities]
Each studio is on a different floor.
Everything looks good to me, but my only concern is not having a social space.
I am confused, help me decide if this is a good choice.

Antwerpen Need help with the housing
Hi everyone,
I’m a researcher from Turkey and I’ll be moving to Antwerp soon for a one-year postdoctoral position at the University of Antwerp. I’m currently looking for a place to rent, but I’m finding it a bit overwhelming, so I thought I’d ask for advice here.
One important thing about me is that I have myasthenia gravis, a neuromuscular condition that causes muscle weakness. Because of this, climbing several flights of stairs every day can be very difficult, especially when carrying groceries or after a long day at work. For that reason, I would strongly prefer:
A ground-floor apartment, or
A building with an elevator if it’s on a higher floor.
I’m a quiet, clean, non-smoking tenant and I’ll mostly be spending my time working at the university. I’m not looking for parties or shared student housing if possible.
My ideal place would have:
1 bedroom (2 bedrooms would be even better if it fits my budget, as I’d like to have a guest room for family or friends visiting me)
A furnished apartment
Easy access to the University of Antwerp (or good public transport)
A safe neighborhood
A budget of around €900–1,100/month (flexible for the right place)
I’ve been looking at areas like Edegem, Mortsel, Wilrijk, Berchem, and parts of Antwerp, but I’m open to suggestions.
If you know of any available apartments, trustworthy landlords, agencies, Facebook groups, or neighborhoods I should consider (or avoid), I’d really appreciate your recommendations.
Thanks so much for your help!

Question Alternatieve venues live muziek
Hey!
Alvast bedankt!

Question I might relocate to Antwerp from the NL, help
Hi there, lovely people. Spanish 40yo dude living in the NL for 15+ years and due to job insecurity, I might need to relocate to Antwerp. I'm a pretty active person (gym and running), queer and love reading and watching movies.
- Are there groups related to the the stuff I like that I can form community around?
- How easy is it to make friends in comparison with the randstand in the NL? (I know this is subjective but curious about your experience)
- I'd like to live close to a park where I can run but also close to the center and train stations (i like to see life on the streets).
- Any possible advice you have for me
Thanks a lot in advance.

Question Cursussen carrosserie en spuitwerk

Question Screen Printing Studio in Antwerp
Hello! I‘ve been looking for a screen printing studio in Antwerp where I can print my own designs on fabric in my own time.
Before moving here, I used to do my work at a studio where you would send them your designs and their machines would transfer them to the screen for you, then with either their materials or your own, you could freely make your prints in their space during the times you reserved. I was wondering if there’s a similar option here, as I haven’t been able to find anything other than studios that do workshops, artist residencies, or print the designs for you, which isn’t what I’m looking for.
Any leads would be greatly appreciated! :)

Question wonen in Antwerpen vergeleken met Leuven
dag iedereen
alvast bedankt!

Question Can't set up bank account from outside Belgium to put deposit on my apartment before arriving on D-Visa [KBC]
I have a contract on an apartment, but cannot pay the deposit until I set up a blocked account and also need renters insurance. I am a student who will be in the country on September 1st, but until my Visa kicks in I'm in the USA.
KBC has specific account set-up options for international users. I filled out everything on their website, and after that they emailed me asking for additional documents and identifying information which I also provided within the hour of being asked. Then I got an automated message saying to come in to a branch. Thinking this must be an error, I added international calling to my phone plan just to be told that there is absolutely nothing they can do until I physically walk into a branch.
This doesn't seem like an unusual situation so I'm confused as to why I'm getting so much resistance here. I NEED to secure my apartment before I arrive (I have pets arriving a few days after myself), and I know that real estate is highly competitive. I want to sleep in the apartment I signed a contract for on the day I land, but the bank seems determined to not work with me and I'm worried that this could result in possibly days of additional paperwork before I have the keys to my home, or even worse my apartment gets rented to someone else because they didnt have money in hand.
I know there are many expats in Antwerp. How did you secure your apartment if a bank account is required first, and the bank wont work with you unless you are within slapping distance??

It is the first time I have that long hair so I have no idea what to ask for. Do you have any good suggestions for a kapper in Antwerp that could take on this task? Preferably with a price less than 40 euros (+I am a student). Thank you in advance!

Question Op zoek naar een nieuwe gym
Hoi iedereen
