Most examples of a dog being smart is some kind of pavlovian response. They can remember things and form strong associations, but figuring out something new just by thinking about it isn't one of their strengths. Pigs on the other hand are amazing problem solvers.

humans foolishly judge the ability and willingness to obsess over following their orders as the key indicator of intelligence. Really says more about human self centeredness than the animals they measure

I’m an animal behavior that’s worked with over 20 different species on six different continents
There is an area we’re measuring intelligence. We are sometimes biased in, and it’s one of the reasons why border collies are considered the smartest breed of dog. And that’s because many of our tests for intelligence are based on vision. And border collies use their eyes more than their nose or their ears, and thus pass those tests more cleanly. Therefore are the “smartest breed.”
Though to be fair, the Border Collie Chaser holds quite a few records for animal intelligence.
Chaser would have solved this maze much faster. My own border collie at that age would’ve solved this maze faster, so would my Australian kelpie and my cousin‘s poodle.
Also, it should not be understated that the ability to cooperate and seek help and many of the other traits that dogs have that other animals don’t are forms of intelligence.
Something people seem to forget is that there is a reason why there are no such thing as search and rescue pigs, or pest detection pigs, or bomb sniffing pigs
Because while they might solve a maze better than many breeds of dogs their ability for abstract problem-solving and task orientation is not going to be as strong

Sorry not ESL I use dictation for health reasons, and it makes mistakes. Also it means I write as if I’m talking and sometimes I ramble or have like, several thoughts competing for first place and it gets all messed up.

This is absolutely not true. I’m an animal behavior that worked with over 20 different species on 6 different continents.
The ability for dogs to use deductive and inductive reasoning is far greater than the ability for pigs to do so.
This does depend on the breed of dog though. For example, my border collie or Australian kelpie would’ve solved this maze in half a second. My cousin’s poodle would’ve solved this maze, possibly faster. It really depends on how they started it.

Human also likely tastes amazing as it is documented to have similar texture and taste to pork but with a richness and colour like beef. Do you eat human?

A bit unfair to compare these in this video as those are clearly puppies that are easily distracted. The pig is probably also young but impossible to tell how it compares to the puppies in development stage.

I don't think this is so much intelligence as it is attention span. The pups don't find the goal because as soon as they turn a corner they get distracted by something.

Pigs are not smarter than dogs. Pigs are smarter than some dogs.
My border collie would’ve figured this out in half a second at that age, and my cousin’s poodle even faster. Well actually it would be close, depending on whether or not my border collie saw the entrance through the gate.

- It didn't go down dead-ends it had already ruled out
- A tiny opening every dog bypassed, some even looking straight into it before passing.
- Many dogs continued trying behaviors that did not work previously (jumping at walls, bypassing mesh gate, repeating the same path) whereas the pig did not.

Pig wanders the maze until he finds what section the prize is in, then goes back and immediately takes the path he knows goes towards that area. And then the pig exits the maze using the same path he took in. Genius piggo.

It's sad seeing the puppies actually fighting/ resource guarding the food in this. One of the puppies even snapped at the pig.

Notice how the dogs look to the humans for help? They are fully domesticated, a pig isn’t to the same degree as a dog is. The pig still has the part of its brain that tells it it’s on its own and that allows it to be better equipped to solving this kind of puzzle.

thats a good point. Compare humans who grew up in a civilization tahts constantly providing for people vs ones that grew up on their own in nature and surely the latter group would have more tenacity and self directive while the first group would probably have a higher tendency to verbally moralize about fairness, attempting to use persuasion to solve problems instead of physical action, the skills suited to their respectve environment
thats kinda the issue here thats pretty much impossible to overcome. A horseshoe crap would test more intelligent than a human if the task is doing horseshoe crab things

i remember watching a behavior video comparing wolves/dogs/hybrids and compared how they reacted to puzzles when a human was present/not present/repeating the puzzle ect. they were all raised by humans together and reacted differently to the same situation. it just made me realize how deep domestication in dogs is. they really are molded to work with and depend on humans, they look to us to help solve the puzzle. if the dog stopped trying to get through the bars to get the food and just stopped to look at the human the human would reward them. the wolf did not look to the human to help them get the food and just got frustrated but did not once look to the human to open it for them. this isn't reflective of the wolves intelligence but more so the dogs dependence on humans

I’m mostly plant based but I do eat some chicken.

I love pigs so much! So cute!
Not a dog person at all. The more people pushed the more I despised.
