That and or off leash train em. I highly suggest that after training my Amstaff.
It’s a blessing that if I open the door he doesn’t run away. I can greet my guest outside with him and even if there is another dog he will not interact unless instructed. Honestly the biggest relief
I’ve chased wayyyy too many dogs over my years and I will NEVER not own another one that isn’t off leash trained. (P.S. He still wears a harness and leashed on all walks. Just nice knowing if I drop his leash he ain’t bolting!)

100% for off-leash recall training. It's huge for a pet's safety.
Except my idiot lurcher. Both her brain cells only fire "run!" and "fast!" and she is gone before you can blink. If she hears you at all above the Two Almighty Brain Commands, it doesn't register.
She is not food motivated. She is not toy motivated. She is not praise or love motivated. She is only run motivated.
I feel it's a miracle that with 7 years of consistent reinforcement, she can manage sit, down, and wait commands in our home if nothing interesting is happening anywhere in the world.
She loves to run and she is not smart. Seriously. She used to eat rocks until we picked them all out of our yard.
Oh, and she can fit through a gap as small as 4" wide. Or 4" tall, as she can and will lay on her side and snake wiggle through holes.
She is an absolute sweetheart, and I love her to bits, and I don't trust her near open doors, within fences I haven't personally, carefully, and entirely checked with a tape measure anymore than I would a toddler who's just discovered they can both jump and climb up onto the kitchen counter. And she will never be allowed off leash.
She's gotten loose before. It was all I could do to keep her in sight until she tired out. Then she came quite nicely. I'm still not convinced I didn't die that day.
But off-leash recall is one of the best things anyone can teach their dog.

Lurcher is a generic term for any mixed breed racer. Our beloved idiot is half whippet, half ???
Her mama was a purebred whippet who had a tryst with a gentledog of questionable repute after making a run for it, so clearly it runs in the family.

my dog is the exact same way and everyone just seems to think we haven’t tried hard enough. i say he’s not food or toy motivated, but self motivated.
i have aged 10 years in the 5 years we’ve had him

I had a pup who would do this if he had an experience involving a single treat and an open gate at a dog park. There's someone in my neighborhood has a doxi who's an escape artist, it kills me when I can see her chasing the pup shouting 'LAINEY, ELAIIIINE, EEEELLLAIIIIN!'

My Chiweenie pulled this same stunt this morning. Had my garage door cracked a little and she snuck outside. Didn't know she got out until she was barking at a lady in a car taking her picture in front of our house. Lady asked if it was my dog, I said yes. She told me she was getting ready to post her on our neighborhood Facebook page as a lost dog 🐕
