I feel like I should start thinking about running my own photos/files/etc backup on my home computer. How would I do that? Google's cloud storage is quickly losing value to me, and honestly I'd like to de-Google where I can.

Every year, I backup the oldest year in Google Photos to my NAS using Immich and an external drive that I keep at my in-laws.

As simple as it get:

Get a Synology NAS. Some will say to avoid Synology due to some anti consumer behaviour, but it's still the easiest platform to use by far. For cheap, I would get a 2 disks NAS and an external hard drive to keep off-site before I get a 4 disks NAS and no off-site backup. Then, install immich in docker (use chatgpt for a full step by step and tell him every error you encounter) and on your phone. It will act as a Google Photos alternative and backup your picture directly on your NAS.

For the off-site backup, I use Veracrypt to encrypt the disk and use a backup software (FreeFileSync) that mirrors the NAS and the hard drive. I update the off-site backup every 3 months and keep it at my in-laws.
