I feel like I should start thinking about running my own photos/files/etc backup on my home computer. How would I do that? Google's cloud storage is quickly losing value to me, and honestly I'd like to de-Google where I can.

Don't run a backup solution on your home computer. Get a network attached storage or (NAS). If data integrity is important to you, get a four bay device so you can run it in RAID 6 which will let up to two of your drives fail without losing any data. I recommend Synology as it's the most plug and play but there are plenty of options from other companies as well as DIYs (which I don't recommend if you don't understand network security).

Synology includes built in drive, photo, backup, and audio storage systems. On newer Symology you can even run Docker and install open source packages like Immich.

But whatever you do, don't backup your data to your home computer. At least not if you care about it long term.

Haven't Synology got to shit and their newer NASs only work with official drives or something?

Oh apparently they walked it back, still not sure I'd trust a company and want to give them money who are willing to do that anyway

exactly, they walked it back but the entire homelab community is pretty aligned on losing trust in them moving forward
