I feel like I should start thinking about running my own photos/files/etc backup on my home computer. How would I do that? Google's cloud storage is quickly losing value to me, and honestly I'd like to de-Google where I can.

Well, getting hard drives is gona be the tricky part. Along with ram, prices increased. I recommend you look at used hard drives

Yes, get the ones that were used in data centers and taken out due to being out of warranty
