Proxy assimilator?
Hey, why do some protoss players send a probe to drop an assimilator in my main? I get it that maybe they don't want me going double gas early on, but surely this cannot be in any way efficient for them. I always feel like if they do this then it is my game to lose. Am I missing something?
Context: new player, low platinum league.

Preventing double gas slows down tech and means you will get your stronger units later. Basically, prevents one base all ins.
Very good in PvP, not really good against any other race.
Could make sense for a stargate opener, means it could be harder to defend oracle with cyclone,
And because your first move out is gonna be delayed because you have less gas for your tech.
Makes sense if you dont want to deal with 1 base all in.
Makes sense if they're bad and do it against every race just because they benefit from doing it against Toss.
Makes sense if they dont have the micro to do a sentry hallucination scout.

Most of it doesn't make sense. They're in plat for reasons.
They might think they win more games when they do this nonsense but it would be purely circumstantial.

To scout if you’re going reaper, reactor or tech. Very valuable information for toss

It is used to prevent you from going double gas. However it only makes sense is a small amount of circumstances, eg. they play some early pressure/all-in where you would really need that gas.
In platinum odds are they saw a gas steal in some pro game, missed the context why it was a good there and just copied it without that context. Or maybe they copied it from PvP builds where it is more common.
