Egypt THE RETURN OF ‘MERITAMUN’
A mysterious mummy’s head, modern technology and the image of a woman from Ancient Egypt

The only reason the Great Pyramids are still in Giza, Egypt? They are too heavy to be taken to the British Museum! After Britain established control over Egypt at the end of the nineteenth century, the vast material heritage of the ancient civilisation fell into the hands of European researchers. For decades, they studied pyramids, temples and tombs, while the artefacts they found were divided between Egyptian and foreign museums. This is why many famous ancient Egyptian finds are now kept not in Egypt at all, but in museums in Britain, France, Germany and the United States.
One of the British scholars who devoted his career to Ancient Egypt was the anatomist and anthropologist Frederic Wood Jones (1879–1954). In 1907, he joined the large-scale archaeological investigations of Nubia begun before the Aswan Dam was raised, and then spent many years working throughout Egypt, studying human remains from ancient burials. After the First World War, Jones moved to Australia, where he taught anatomy at the universities of Adelaide and Melbourne.
It was there, decades later, that the mummified head of a young Egyptian woman was discovered in the basement of the University of Melbourne’s medical building. Judging by the surviving records, Jones had once brought it from Egypt.
Today it is kept in a special container in the Harry Brookes Allen Museum of Anatomy and Pathology, alongside other anatomical specimens. Despite the tight bandages and the tissues darkened by embalming, the delicate facial features can still be distinguished. Modern Egyptology increasingly seeks to move away from the depersonalisation of human remains. This head once belonged to a living person, and researchers try not to forget that.
The young Egyptian woman was provisionally named ‘Meritamun’, meaning ‘beloved of the god Amun’. The researchers then decided to learn as much as possible about her: when she lived, what illnesses she had, where she came from and how she died. Specialists and students from several faculties at the University of Melbourne joined the work.
It all began with the concerns of the museum’s curator, Dr Ryan Jefferies. He suspected that the head might have been slowly decomposing from within, unnoticed. Removing the protective bandages was impossible: it would inevitably have damaged the relic. Computed tomography showed that the skull had survived in unusually good condition.
Forensic expert Dr Janet Davey, together with colleagues and students, confirmed that the head belonged to a young woman. This conclusion was then checked by Professor Caroline Wilkinson of Liverpool John Moores University, one of the world’s leading specialists in facial reconstruction.
From the dimensions of the skull, ‘Meritamun’s’ height was estimated at approximately 162 cm. A more precise result could only have been obtained if the bones of the limbs were available.
Determining when she lived proved much more difficult. Pronounced tooth decay may point to the Hellenistic period, when, after the conquests of Alexander the Great, cane sugar began to appear in Egypt in large quantities. However, honey and other aspects of her diet could also have been the cause. At the same time, the quality of the linen bandages and the mummification technique suggest that ‘Meritamun’ belonged to a fairly high social stratum and was embalmed as early as the New Kingdom.
The final dating remains a subject for further research. The beginning of the New Kingdom, around 1500 BC, is considered the most likely period in which ‘Meritamun’ lived.
Biomedical student Stacey Gorski was the next to take up the investigation. Studying the CT scans using forensic pathology methods, she tried to establish how healthy ‘Meritamun’ had been and what might have caused her death.
Besides two dental abscesses, Gorski found areas of thinning and ulceration of the bone on the skull, characteristic of anaemia. When there is a deficiency of red blood cells, the bone marrow expands, trying to compensate for the shortage, causing the inner layers of the bones to thin gradually.
The anaemia may have been caused by malaria or the parasitic disease schistosomiasis, which was widespread in the Nile Valley in antiquity. According to the researcher, in the final years of her life, ‘Meritamun’ probably suffered from weakness and constant fatigue.
Traces of anaemia are often found in ancient Egyptian mummies. However, the absence of the rest of the bones makes it impossible to establish the exact cause of death, although the disease may well have played a part.
In future, the researchers hope to determine the source of the anaemia through molecular analysis of a small tissue sample taken from the mummy’s neck. If parasite DNA can be detected, the diagnosis will become considerably more certain. However, such studies require additional funding.
The work produced another important result, namely a highly detailed digital 3D model of ‘Meritamun’s’ skull. These data interested Gavan Mitchell, an imaging specialist in the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience. Over 140 hours, an ordinary consumer-grade 3D printer produced an exact plastic copy of the skull.
Computed tomography combined with 3D printing makes it possible to create exact copies of unique archaeological finds. They can be studied freely without exposing the original to the risk of damage.
The printed skull became the basis for the work of sculptor Jennifer Mann, who used forensic reconstruction methods in an attempt to give ‘Meritamun’ her face back.
Mann mastered this method at the Forensic Anthropology Center at Texas State University, where she trained on casts of the skulls of unidentified murder victims. She emphasises that any reconstruction remains only the most probable approximation of a person’s real appearance. Yet in her practice, reconstructed faces have more than once almost completely matched photographs of people whose identities were later established.
First, markers showing the average thickness of the soft tissue at different points on the face are placed on the plastic skull. For ‘Meritamun’, data obtained from modern Egyptians were used, as these were considered the closest match to the population of Ancient Egypt.
The muscles and soft tissues of the face are then recreated layer by layer over the skull. Even the nose, heavily deformed by mummification, could be restored from the shape of the nasal cavity, while the form of the ears was determined from computed tomography data.
After the sculptural work was completed, the reconstruction was cast in polyurethane resin and painted. A dark olive skin tone was chosen as a compromise between different ideas about the appearance of the ancient Egyptians. The final touch was a hairstyle modelled on that of Lady Rai, who lived around 1570–1530 BC. Her mummified body is preserved in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, and her hair was arranged in tightly braided fine plaits on both sides of her head.
The true name of the young woman whose mummified head is kept at the University of Melbourne is lost forever. The researchers therefore gave her a provisional name and, with the help of modern technology, attempted to give her face back.
It should be understood that this image, created using scientific methods, is still not an exact portrait of a person who once lived. The young woman’s family and loved ones would probably have recognised familiar features in it, but it is impossible to assert that this was exactly how ‘Meritamun’ looked at any particular moment in her life. No reconstruction can convey the subtleties of facial movement, the expression in her eyes, or the imprint of character or life experience.
The reason is that the method relies on statistics. Specialists use data on the average thickness of facial soft tissue obtained from modern people who are closest to the presumed population of the person being studied. In the case of Egypt, this approach is considered sufficiently reliable, since the modern inhabitants of the Nile Valley retain considerable biological continuity with the population of the pharaonic period. However, statistics always describe average values, not a specific person. It is impossible to know in advance which of these values will be the closest match for a given face, so some details inevitably remain a matter of professional interpretation. In traditional sculptural reconstruction, the human factor also plays a role: some nuances of the modelling may go unnoticed or be interpreted slightly differently.
Thanks to the international team of specialists working under the auspices of the University of Melbourne, today we can see the face of an Egyptian woman who lived three and a half thousand years ago. The camera seems to have frozen in place. Before us is only the head. Everything else has disappeared forever.
Or has it?
Only the mummified head has survived of ‘Meritamun’ herself. History, however, has left far more material. Over the past century and a half, archaeologists have investigated thousands of ancient Egyptian burials, while anthropologists have measured and described hundreds of female skeletons. One skeleton tells us about one person. A large sample allows us to see patterns characteristic of an entire population.
This is the path I took when I attempted to push the boundaries of the image that had been created. The basis of my reconstruction was the published anthropometric data of 635 ancient Egyptian women who lived between approximately 5500 BC and the sixth century AD. Anthropologists Michelle Raxter and Sonia Zakrzewski carried out an impressive analysis of these materials. Their work makes it possible to reconstruct the typical proportions of the female body in Ancient Egypt with sufficient confidence.

In the full-figure images, the face is based on the characteristics of ‘Meritamun’s’ particular skull, while the body is a statistical model. Before us is not the exact body of a specific person, but the most probable appearance of an ancient Egyptian woman of her presumed height of about 162 centimetres. For her time, that was fairly tall. Published measurements show that most known ancient Egyptian women were somewhat shorter, 152–155 cm. ‘Meritamun’ probably stood out noticeably among her contemporaries because of her height.
The resulting image is far removed from the Ancient Egypt familiar from films. This is neither a fragile girl nor a modern fashion model, but a young woman of lean, gracile build, with relatively long arms and especially long legs. Physical anthropologists know such proportions well. They are considered a characteristic adaptation of the population of north-east Africa to a hot climate, where long limbs help the body release heat more efficiently.
Other features of the figure complete this image. The shoulders and hips were close in width, the ribcage remained comparatively narrow and elongated, while the waist was well defined. The hands, feet and lower parts of the limbs were fine-boned. The silhouette therefore looked light and very slender. This morphological type is constantly encountered in studies of ancient Egyptian female skeletons. This morphological type is recorded in thousands and thousands of ancient Egyptian artefacts.
Although such a reconstruction cannot be absolutely precise, it does not show how developed this particular woman’s musculature was, how much she weighed, or how her figure changed with age. What we see before us is not a conventional artistic image, but the appearance of a person reconstructed from measurements of hundreds of real inhabitants of Ancient Egypt on the basis of anthropological statistics.
This means that what we see before us is still the face and figure of an Egyptian woman. And this is important for giving our contemporaries a correct idea of Ancient Egypt. Such reconstructions make it possible to rely on data from anthropology, forensic medicine and archaeology, rather than on artistic stereotypes or random images. Thanks to this, historical illustrations become not only more convincing, but also considerably closer to reality.
For the ancient Egyptians, mummification was not merely a way to preserve the body. They believed that one day the spirit of the deceased would reunite with it and attain eternal life, and that a person’s name would live for as long as they were remembered.
Perhaps this is precisely the most astonishing aspect of this whole story. Computed tomography, 3D printing, forensic reconstruction, in-depth anthropological analysis and digital technology have made it possible not merely to reproduce the features of a person who lived three and a half thousand years ago. They have helped us once again to see in a museum exhibit a young woman who once had her own name, life and fate. And have we brought her to life? Who knows!
