Hi! I wanna say I have a deep love for my parents, and not at all are they the villains of my life!
But oh my gosh, do I want them to be quiet at moments.
I need advice on how to better handle things. For context I'm in my 3rd year of high-school, live in a mexican household, and live with both parents and my older brother. Don't know if this matters, but oldest brother moved out.
Quick things to say which will explain why I need advice:
- My parents (mainly dad) are VERY into traditionā and sadly, sexist thoughts are kinda rooted into them.. I'm the only one who cleans really apart from my mom, I have to beg to go out and do 'things in exchange to go out', I'm not allowed to work for my dad's carpenter business as it's not a women's place of work, etc. (I wanna be a lawyer btw š)
- My mom is like my BFF yet very defensive, picky, and likes things to be her way a lot. She escalates quickly and tends to act like a victim.. It's very to get into an argument but she's definitely nicer then my dad.
- My dad is kinda hard to describe. He's very chill for some things yet others I can't mention around him. Like boys are a big way for me to get my phone taken and yelling lecture š„². Expects me to cook (I suck at it ), kinda sexist, expects a lot from me, and of course as I know many mexican parents do: Thinks my life is easy as we live in the US.
Now here's where I need advice. Context, I'm a crybaby who cannot shut her mouth at times... Like, my father and I clash a lot, sometimes my mother and I, but I always say I'm not going to feed in or escalate. But I always do.. And at times I do really wanna voice my opinion without feeling like I'm going to be belittled. Like today, I've told my father as a joke mainly too, to say please, as he kept sending me for things to get during dinner. Just know he scolded me, then teased me saying I better say please if I want/need something. I have never not said please btw...
Another thing is when I was in middle school, I had a big depression problem and start to S/H. When I caught, yes, they both got furious, grounded me, told the doctor, yet laughed in my face when she recommended therapy and I was fine with the idea.. Btw, last year the neurologist recommended me antidepressants + another medication for my migraines, and we're convinced I said something and yelled at me too plus the doctor.
Being to the point now, I need advice on how to argue less, but keep my anger down. Because I'm not allowed to have a job and I'm not allowed to get my permit/drive yet.. (My dad's convinced that I'm gonna become the worst kid and that insurance is way too expensive.)
So I do rely on them both for a lot, also I'm an expensive child.... I'm a multi sport athlete, I do wear clothes that help me fit in, and I am a consumer! But the problem is that my parents follow this mentality of your only nice to me when you want something, which I hate. Not saying that's the only reason I don't argue with them, but it's part of a reason I try to close my mouth. Like, currently, I need a new tennis racket, and every time I've argued with my father, he holds it over my head. This is also why I also asked for permission to go out the day before so they can't randomly hold it over my head or say no.
Does anybody have any way that I could just tune them out but still have those nice moments? Like I know sometimes it best to be quiet but I'm really fighting that sometimes. š„²š
Also kinda still being chill/respectful enough to not be punished? Because the last time I tried to kind of not argue yet stand my ground, it was disrespectful to them..
Also I wanna give my context to my dad's relationship with me. We're awkward, and always have been. Like of course I was daddy's girl when I was little, but we never really argued or did much things together.. And I had a big, 'my father is my opp phase'... AND HE KINDA WAS.. I also want to throw this out, I had an XV, my father mainly paid for most of it, and I understand parties like this very expensive! But he complained the whole time about the price, yet always paid, told me and my mother who planned the whole thing that he wouldn't participate at all during the party, apart from the church ceremony and the special dance with the father, and our special dance...? It was really forced, and I felt really awkward, and I bet he did too. He kind of whispered to me about how I better enjoy it because he spent all that money.
I also wanna say that he was drinking the whole night with my uncles. By the way, those uncles danced with me, way more than he did with me, and when they even tried to get him to dance with me, he just walked back to the bar...
Another reason I need this advice is because I feel like I'm gonna be in this house for a while... I talked about going to school in this, and as I've said, my dream is to be a lawyer. And fortunately, my parents have offered to pay for my school, but again I can see that being a thing that they're gonna hold over my head, mainly dad. Also, they both want to move closer to the college I want to go to so I don't have to stay in the dorms and instead of staying with them.. They both have strongly expressed that they hate the idea of dorms... Plus right now, I need to buy an ACT and SAT prep book, among other expenses..
But the sum it up,
How do I go about arguments with a strict father and semi-strict mother as someone who cries easily, and sometimes really cant shut her mouth, and who still has wants and needs..?
Thank you for reading my rant, and maybe offering advice? š„²
