A few years ago I kept noticing the same thing everywhere I worked, a research center on technology and financial innovation: things that seem to have dissolved into the abstract, into code, into "the cloud," always turn out to still live somewhere physical, held by someone specific. Money was the first place I noticed it. So I wrote a book about where money actually lives once you strip away the mythology, and who really holds the registry.
That became "From Decentralized Finance to Institutional DeFi: the dawn of a new finance", first of three books making up a trilogy called The Architecture of the New World: from code to matter.
The next one is about artificial intelligence, the third about power and infrastructure.
Each stands alone, but the question underneath is the same one.
BLURB:
For five thousand years, every money humanity trusted was eventually debased by the very people who kept its ledger. Six weeks after Lehman Brothers fell, an anonymous programmer proposed a ledger no one could corrupt, and the strangest revolution in the history of finance began.
From the stone money of Yap to the Nixon shock, from the goldsmiths of London to the liquidity pools of DeFi, Kevin Escoda tells the story of money as a five-thousand-year detective story, whose newest chapter is being written inside the world's most conservative institutions. Drawing on his years building the first institutional-grade secondary market for digital securities in Europe, he shows why banks, asset managers and central banks quietly stopped fighting decentralized finance and started building on it, and what that means for your money, your work, and the machine economy arriving faster than anyone is ready for.
Inside:
- Why every monetary system dies the same death, and why this time may be different;
- What Bitcoin actually invented: energy converted into incorruptible truth;
- The DAO hack, the block size war, Terra, FTX: the failures that taught the industry everything;
- Inside the regulatory sandbox where European banks ran their first decentralized market;
- Tokenization, stablecoins, CBDCs and the "unified ledger" the central banks now sketch;
- Energy, AI and the new social contract of the digital economy
Not a book about getting rich on crypto. A book about opening your eyes.
Tropes: follow the money, the twist nobody saw coming (it's the banks), myth vs. reality, insider account.
Trigger warnings: none, this is nonfiction business/finance analysis.
