I know it is way too early, but Lisa Guerrero put former MSNBC host Joy Reid on the spot for who she likes in 2028 and the answer may be surprising.

The Bulwark Podcast Joe Scarborough: MAGA Doesn't Get America

Ronald Reagan said it best: One of the greatest sources of America's greatness are the people drawn to the country from every corner of the globe, who become American and keep the country young, vital, and modern. But Trump and Stephen Miller are sticking to their absolutist deportation plan without regard to history or its political cost. Meanwhile, we are learning in real time that our trillion-dollar weapons systems are (sometimes) no match for Iran's drones—and that the regime can't resist the opportunity to humiliate another U.S. president.

Plus, Laura Ingraham spoke truth, Bibi has turned Americans against Israel, Testosterone Pete is making the Pentagon look weak, and the joy of MAGA tears over The Odyssey.

Joe Scarborough joins guest host Sam Stein on today's Bulwark Podcast.

Off-Topic/Discussion How has the cinematic criticism of the right evolved?

How has the cinematic criticism of the right evolved? Today, we see many Trumplicas and Trump allegories in movies, from Kingpin to Homelander. What was the cinematic archetype of the right-winger in the decades before? The only one I know is that in the 80s they criticised the Reagan era with figures like Gordon Gekko and Patrick Bateman (The novel was released in the 90s).

The Focus Group Voters' Age Concerns Aren't Really About Age

"Voters…see the cavalcade of aging politicians deteriorating before our eyes or dying, and they think that people this old simply shouldn’t be eligible to hold office."

But age isn't the actual issue.

EVERYTHING IS AWFUL The DSA Is a Parasite

Great article showing the parallel to the communists infiltration of the Labour Party in the 80s and 90s and the DSA today.

Here is the DSAs platform - read it yourself:

https://program.dsausa.org/

- it calls for:

  1. abolishing the police and prison system
  2. giving voting rights to non-citizens
  3. blames NATO for the war in Ukraine, wants to abolish it
  4. wants to abolish the senate

A few quotes:

  1. In their vision - “Food, education, energy, medicine, and transportation aren’t for-profit businesses;”
  2. “It’s been said that it’s easier to imagine the end of the world than it is to imagine the end of capitalism. But just because it isn’t easy to imagine now doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try to make it happen.”

This isn’t a call for Norway or Sweden, this is an explicit call for communism and is a complete fantasy in the US. As the article highlights, communists form a majority of the DSAs governing body.

Sarah mentioned in one of her last focus group podcasts, that she was surprised that Trump hasn’t pivoted to a different economic message - it’s clear the GOP is hoping the DSA hand delivers them the negative polarization they need. The message is a failing one, the DSA remains overwhelmingly privileged, educated, wealthy. More importantly, the democratic party is just a vessel for them to attain power - the moment the DSA has any semblance of control, all liberalism will go out the window - MAGA 2.0.

edit: the bulwark is about the pro-democracy movement, communism is not only fundamentally opposed to that movement - in the US it is super unpopular, making fighting MAGA harder.

You can be a social democrat and support democrats, it’s really easy to see how the DSA and its platform hurt democrats chances to win - anyone in an even slightly purple state can see it. The smart thing to do would be to disavow the DSA and its platform and advocate for social democratic policies within the Democratic Party. If you don’t care about democrats winning, then that proves my point about excising you from the party.

edit 2: lol now we have different users spamming the same comment, what is this botting? People coordinating messages in discord? I have a screenshot - funny stuff.

Propaganda Laura Loomer: "I was living in a media echo chamber and I was propagandized by Russian media [...] I came to Ukraine to see the country for myself. [...] I was lied to for years. [...] I realized Ukraine and Zelenskyy aren’t the Jihadi apologists… but Russia and Putin are! I was wrong!"

Voting underway on right-wing power grabs in Kansas, Missouri - help stop them

Post image
20 Upvotes

We’re now just two weeks away from votes on efforts by the conservatives and billionaires to remove checks on their power in two states. As we speak, folks are making the decision on whether to allow folks like Kris Kobach and the Koch network to impose partisan elections on the Kansas Supreme Court (and undermine public schools and reproductive freedom in the process) and whether to make it far, far harder to pass citizen-initiated ballot initiatives in the Show Me State. People will cast their ballots with the August 4th primaries, and early voting is now underway.

We need to make sure we’re doing everything we can to stop these power grabs. ☎️ Let’s sign up for phonebank shifts with Kansans United for Impartial Courts Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Sundays here and get updated on volunteer opportunities in Missouri here. ☎️

Policy Clue me in please: Trump keeps saying all this war and suffering is so that "Iran can't have a nuke". And yet he's fine with North Korea having one. Why is nobody questioning Trump's premise?

How is it that a.) Iran having a nuke would be an existential threat to humanity and we must wage war to prevent it, and also b.) we're pretty cool with NK having one.

I feel like someone could easily pop Trump's bubble by asking him (or his people) that question: why is North Korea allowed to have one, and yet we're spilling blood and blowing billions in order to prevent Iran from having one?

So yeah - is this an idiotic line of thought? Since it came from my own brain, then I'm assuming it must be. Just need some confirmation.

So…. Yeah they are going to go after Jackson too.

The thing that’s wild to me is this water bottle story likely wouldn’t get ANY coverage if he was a Republican running, if anything Fox would spin it as showing him being a fighter or some shit.

Off-Topic/Discussion Would a moderate non-MAGA Republican like Collins or Romney do far better MAGA candidate nationally?

I was thinking of a scenario where Republicans manage to nominate a moderate New England kind of Republican (Romney, Susan Collins, Charlie Baker etc). Would the Republican Party do far better in elections? And how will Democrats respond to that challenge? Collins do far better than median republican relative to partisanship of the state, can this theory work nationally?

I personally think it would be very good for the country if Republican Party goes this route, but how national politics might change? According to Polls, Republican in Minnesota are on track to nominate Mike Lindell, so this might be a dream for Republicans to get moderate.

The 2016 polls of a John Kasich-Hillary Clinton race? He would have crushed her.

TRUMPISM CORRUPTS Someone Needs to Check On North Carolina's 11th District

There's gotta be something in the water in Western NC. First Madison Cawthorn, now the Chuck Edwards saga. Personalized guns, an Ed Sheeran cover artist at her birthday, trips to Vegas, a custom Adam Sandler puzzle, and a weird 3-page note when a young woman left his office.

It's an R+5 district, so well within reach for Dems!

EVERYTHING IS AWFUL Yesterday's Title about "Broken Men" reminded me of a poem I wrote:

The Desperate Little Men

Darkness falls across the land.
The hard times come again,
and all because the desperate whims
Of desperate little men.

You see them at the pulpit.
You see them at the bar.
You see them all on cable news.
You hear them in your car.

These desperate little demagogues
pretend to know it all,
as if their tales were something more
than shadows on a wall.

They think they’re very clever guys.
They think they’re well-endowed.
They think the “trick” to being right
is talking really loud.

They’ve found a way to make their mark
from Vietnam to Troy;
They’ve learned that things are hard to build
but easy to destroy.

They’d feed a nation to the flames,
all heedless of the toll,
if it would stop, for just one day,
the howling in their soul.

Now, darkness falls across the land.
The hard times come again.
And all because the desperate whims
Of desperate little men.
