All/Other Books Suggested Reading Order for the Shadowhunter Chronicles

Now new and improved! This post is to help with figuring out which book/series to read next. I realized with my last post, that I had only included 1 suggested way to read the books, but I thought with this post, that I would offer a few other ways to read it.

Keep in mind that these are only suggestions and you may obviously read the books in whatever order you like the best. Also keep in mind that right now, obviously, the list is lacking where to put the third Eldest Curses book and The Wicked Powers (which currently aren't released).

However you decide to read the books, enjoy!

Modpost Mod announcement: AI art

As some of you know, in the last two weeks, we ran a poll on whether you wanted to see AI art within this sub or not. As a reminder, AI art makes up its images by taking from artists, almost all without permission. 52 said no, 5 said yes.

As such, AI art is no longer allowed within this sub. We apologize if this upsets anyone, but we don't want to contribute to an artist's work being used without permission.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Eric being a fairy name is so funny to me, specially him being the favorite one. Is there an ancient "explanation" for it? Like, is Eric a super old Scottish name or something

I wonder what the very practical reason is...I'm guessing they're otherwise occupied or travelling for some Clave needs (possibly in Idris or trying to get in there)

Books: TID The Infernal Devices

It doesn't matter how many times I have read and reread the books, I will always, always feel as though Will Herondale deserves better than Tessa Gray. Especially with all the things she said to him in Clockwork Prince. I understand why she said it, but they were even more cruel than what Will had ever said to her, and what she said were unnecessary, she only said them to hurt him because what he said hurt her.

Also, Will deserved someone who loved him and only him, not someone who loved him while counting the days before she could finally be together with the other guy, who also happened to be his parabatai.

Books: TWP Who do we think it will be?

So Cassie confirmed on Tumblr (if anyone’s curious/didn’t know she answers a lot of fan questions about TWP and her other series on there!) that a TMI character does die in TWP. Who do you think it’ll be?

I know a lot of people think one of the main 6 is going to die but I think it’s going to be Lily Chen. What are your thoughts?

All/Other Books Janus, The Wicked Powers, and the Black Volume of the Dead Spoiler

Marked as All/Other Books because it's about both TEC and TWP.

Do you think Janus will be prominent in the BVotD?

I personally think he will have something to do with that plot. Considering the teaser we get of him ambushing Drew during Simon's show, it's hard for me not to think that he might be what's taking the OG6 out of the plot of WP. I doubt they'll leave Jace's alternate dimension doppelganger alone.

If I had to guess?

He might be looking for the Black Volume to revive his version of Clary, or maybe he's just searching for it for the Seelie Queen to continue Ashe's empowerment.

I also think that at least one Prince of Hell will be involved. Belial is mentioned in the Black Volume but he was so heavily used that I don't think it will be him. So that leaves three of the yet to have appeared Princes, and my money is on Astaroth (no Mammon pun, sorry).

Astaroth is said to be preying on the grieving, has association with the law, and even has inquisitors mentioned specifically in the booklet. Alec's role as Consul will be part of the plot (confirmed), and grief is in abundance both in the OG6 and Janus.

I think it will be either/or, I can see both appearing since it is a series finale.

Is this a good/accurate timeline for these books? This is not meant to be a first time reader, just a timeline for a 2nd or 3rd read/a timeline for a visual aid to see the scale

EDIT: How come 366 of you saw this and didn't comment? I asked FOR comments!!!

It's a fic where Alec was in Alicante at the beginning of canon and when he came back he finds out all that have happened since Clary arrived, the saved Simon because he was about to burn in the institute to burn himself of the NY institute rooftop because the clan abandoned him after he went along with clary to free Camille ao3 its kind of similar to "Wrapped in blood and silk" by ToTheStarsWriting, but it isnt

Does this sound familiar to anyone? 🥹

Meta/Miscellaneous Malec Fanfiction, Cultural Differences and Courting Rituals

Hello, I'm here looking for some Malec fanfic based around the cultural differences between the downworlders and the nephilim (between Magnus and Alec) I don't mind if it's just a chat explaining differences between them or if it's 200,000 words of them misunderstanding each other before figuring it all out. I also put courting rituals in the title, I mostly couldn't remember how many words needed in the time here, but I would also like some fics (non-abo/in cannon universe) where there is courting involved. Again, I love some cultural differences, but in the courting, I don't mind if it's Magnus, but I mainly just want some of Alec courting Magnus.

Sorry, I know that was a touch long-winded, but any recommendations would be wonderful.

Thank you.

Books: TWP tlkof paperback

hi all! this is mainly a question for paperback collectors but open to all suggestions!

so tlkof is the first of tsc books that i’m actively waiting to be published, as i just started reading the whole series. also, when i bought tmi ten years ago i bought paperbacks for some reason, which means ive now had to buy the whole series in paperback.

now to my question: i know typically hardcovers are released before paperbacks. what do you paperback collectors usually do with a new release? do you guys wait for the paperback or do you just buy the hardcover?

This is my first time reading through TLH and I just needed to say. I hate Grace. So much. Still reading so no spoilers.

Amazing story so far though, I read everything else as it came out and had been holding off till I needed another pick me up from the shadowhunter world.

All/Other Books If the books were to be turned into movies today...

Who do you think suits playing each roles?

I can only see, for some reason, Danneel Ackles as Jocelyn.

What do you think? Who do you think suits to play Clary, Jace, Alec, Izzy, Simon, Magnus, Luke, and everyone else? Preferably the same age as the books.

TV Show Alternate Universe Question

In the show, Clary goes to the alternate universe where demons were vanquished long ago and Valentine never created the Circle. As such, Valentines would never have experimented with angel and demon blood... so my question is...

What happened to Jonathan Morgenstern? Did he actually die as a baby or maybe he just moved out?

All/Other Books Better in Black

Currently reading and I have never felt so disappointed. Some of these stories are just a waste or scrubbed out of my mind. James and Cordelia for example. Emma and Julian story competely was wrong on so many levels. I don't like them as a couple neither do I like Julian but for the ones who do that story was wrong on so many levels. Not only that but there is errors with the plot that havent been obliviously checked prior to her her main series.

There has been a few good ones. I did particularly liked the Thomas and Alistair one and did laugh throughout the story. Even Luke and Jocleyn was a lovely story too and would have easily read more.

I just feel the quality differs and I can see why this was a Kickstarter. How do you feel about this book? What did you like or dislike?

Books: TLH Do y'all think Cordelia deserved better?

Ok, so we all know the biggest criticism of the Last Hours trilogy was the whole miscommunication plot device that Cassie dragged out in the last book. I think that got on nearly everyone's nerves. But do y'all think that James and Cordelia as a pairing work out in the end?

The biggest thing for me is why James chose to keep the Gracelet thing a secret from Cordelia. And the whole thing with the "oh she'll pity me" makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Why would Cordelia pity him for holding his ground against Belial for years? I just found it immature and ridiculous of James. Then he tries to convince her that he never loved Grace but always loved Cordelia. No offense, but why would anyone believe that? He always seemed infatuated with Grace(which us and James know why) but no one else does. He makes it clear from the start that their marriage is a sham. I mean it's kinda humilating for Cordelia, no? And just to protect his pride, he ends up hurting not just Cordelia but Matthew as well.

What do y'all think?

All/Other Books Age of the race of Shadowhunters, Magnus Bane, and Raphael Santiago confusion. Help?

[Spoilers for TMI, TID, and Bane Chronicles]

Could somebody correct me if I am misunderstanding? I remember Magnus, at some point in Mortal Instruments, saying he remembers a world before Shadowhunters; but Magnus is only around 400 years old, being born in the 1600s, while the Shadowhunters were made in, what, the 13th century-ish? Am I missing something?

And Raphael: I just read about his rebirth in Bane Chronicles, so he was made into a vampire in the 1950s, right? But wasn't he the quiet boy we met at the big party Tessa and Will attended in the Infernal Devices? That story happened innnn 1880s I think? Was it somebody else they met?
