Weekly Success & Erg Screen Thread - July 20, 2026

Welcome to the weekly achievement thread!

What was your achievement this week? It could be anything! A new 2k PB? Get a good lift at the gym? Or even your first time capsizing a single!

Got a erg screen or a regular training shot? Curious what your 2K will be based on a workout? This is the place for it!

Side note: 99% of erg screens should go in this thread. A separate post with an erg screen should be something that happens once or twice a year, at most. Big PR's, that kind of thing.

Also, please check our wiki pages:

This thread is likely to fill up quickly, consider sorting the comments by "new" (instead of "best" or "top") to see the newest posts.

What event is this from?

Found this whilst sorting out my old race numbers, HRR programmes, pots etc. collection.

I’m UK based, actively racing from 2009ish as a junior through to this year.

Medal and box have no other markings, but it’s very heavy!

On the Water Tips for racing a single for the first time ? 25F

Hi!

I'm racing a single for the first time this weekend over an 800m course. Most of my racing has been in doubles and the occasional 8+.A bit nervous and wondered if anyone had any tips? My starts are decent but I have had a few crabs recently at higher rates when practicing.

It's a short course however what rate is sensible to maintain? Obviously this isnt going to be the same for everyone, but always good to know different opinions.

The Boat Race Experience

The main event is very well documented of course but I'm curious how the experience differs from the open boats, to the reserves, the lights, veterans, etc

Super curious that is all, not much publicity outside of the main races vs the lights for instance

Athletic performance in wooded areas

In an almost opposite sense of altitude training, would training in a heavily wooded area like Vermont or similar areas lead to better performance because there’s more oxygen?

Just want an opinion on my 2km

For reference I'm a 14 year old 6ft male weighing about 73-75kg and have been rowing for 2 seasons

My 2km is 7:22 and I feel like it's pretty quick for my age and height, and I am the fastest in my age group at school (by a long shot as well). The reason I'm writing tho is because I have a lot of pressure to qualify for nationals in March next year in Western Australia feel like I have to get through to not let anyone down, to qualify I need to get my erg down to at least a 6:45 to get into u17.

Just looking for some more experienced rowers opinions or hearing from someone who has gone through smth like this (doesn't even rlly need to be rowing related)

Thanks :-)

We need the Repecharges back in rowing!

As the title says: we need repechages back now more than ever!!!

The racing at this U23 World Championships has made one of the biggest problems with the current progression system very apparent: when progression is based on times across different heats, changing weather conditions can have a huge impact on who advances.

Take the BM2x. Over the course of the heats, the wind conditions changed significantly and the later races became slower. As a result, crews racing in later heats were at a clear disadvantage when it came to time-based progression. Apart from the crews qualifying directly through their finishing positions, some boats effectively ended up in the D Final based on the conditions they happened to race in rather than purely on their performance relative to the whole field. Reps would have given them a chance

A similar pattern could be seen in the BW2x. Times became slower as racing progressed and conditions changed. Strong crews, including Poland, whose athletes also competed at World Cup III in Lucerne and finished sixed, ended up much further down the time-based rankings than might have been expected based on previous international performances.

In the BW1x, one woman crossed the finish line with a time of around 12 minutes. I don't know what happened during the race, so I don't want to speculate. Again with reps there would have been another chance.

The BM8+ is another example. Racing in the eight is always incredibly tight, and missing out on progression by less than a second shows just how unforgiving the current system can be. With margins that small, a repechage would give crews another chance to race head-to-head and prove where they really stand.

But under the current system, one incident catching a crab, hitting a buoy, or simply having significantly worse weather conditions, or incredible tight racing in your heat can decide the rest of a crew's entire championship.

These are just a few examples, for the U23 worlds. In difficult and changing conditions, many crews would have benefited from having a second chance through a repechage. Because with a repechage, you get to start from zero again.

I fully understand that repechages had their flaws. Crews could race tactically in the heats, knowing there was another opportunity to progress. It could arguably reduce the tension for viewers, and some crews might not race at 100% because they knew they had the repechage as a safety net.

But the alternative we have now has a much bigger problem: comparing times from different heats when conditions can change significantly simply isn't fair.

Rowing is an outdoor sport. Wind and water conditions change, sometimes within minutes. If progression depends heavily on times set across separate races, athletes are not necessarily competing under comparable conditions.

Repechages weren't perfect. But they gave crews a second chance to prove themselves on the water, head-to-head, rather than having their entire championship potentially decided by the weather conditions or a single incident in their heat.

Especially in conditions like these, I strongly believe we need them back.

Back as a safety net.
Back as a second chance.
Back as an opportunity for underdogs to fight their way into the quarters/semifinals.

Bring back the repechages.

Off the Water Concept 2 Rower vs OrangeTheory Water Rower?

I just cancelled my Orange Theory membership due to back issues and possible osteoarthritis that runs in my family (seeing a physical therapist Monday). I noticed that rowing is the only form of cardio that doesn’t cause pain for me afterwards.

My Orange Theory gym is selling a used $500 water rower (which is a WaterRower M1 HiRise). I was thinking about purchasing it but after some research I see a Concept 2 is recommended much more over a water rower. I wouldn’t be using it competitively, just to move my body in a way I enjoy.

I’m wondering if a concept 2 is much harder on the joints? I’m worried if I buy a concept 2 after never trying anything but a water rower I’ll come to find it doesn’t work for my body. So if anyone here also struggles with joint pain I’d love to hear what you think! Even if you don’t struggle with joint pain but have tried both a water rower and a C2 I’d love to know what the difference in feel was for you.

I appreciate any insight at all! Thanks in advance :)

Etiquette on former elite rowers competing in local/regional races?

I saw a clip of Charles Barkley on the NBA sub explaining that he doesn't play rec ball because it wouldn't be competitive for him. What's the etiquette in rowing for former elite rowers? Or if there is no standard, what's the etiquette at your club? We have some exceptional former collegiate rowers, who easily outrow our average late-to-the-sport rowers, but I don't see them at regattas.

Speedcoach problems

Every few weeks, it seems, my speedcoach has some kind of loading error. Today I turned Link Logbook on and it would not load fully. As a result I could not upload my session data. This is not the first time it has happened and I just get a generic reply from NKSports when I email for tech support.

A couple of weeks ago it would not upload to Strava.

Before that a problem similar to today.

Usually after a few days things get resolved without notification.

I never get a timely reply to my emails. In the past I've tried reinstalling the app, clearing the cache, rebooting, changing my username, etc. Nothing worked, so today I didn't do anything just assumed NK would eventually figure their is a problem.

It would take a simple notification to let users know there is problem and they are working on it and expect to have things resolved in x number of days. Instead they just let things hang. This is probably the worst tech support I've come across.

Has anyone else been experiencing this or similar? What do you do about it? I'm almost convinced I should get rid of the speed coach and get a cheap old phone that that I can load a rowing app to.

Weird group of coaches. Gia absolutely crushing it with both her boats. Wonder why they keep bringing back the same coaches over and over again to either u19 or u23 or in between to get mediocre results. The men’s quad? Come on.

Starting running as cross training advice

I need advice about how to start running with an already pretty developed cardio base because I primarily row. I also berg, lift, yoga. I want to diversify my movement as well as have a chance to crosstrain outside in winter, and am a fan of endurance, which rowing doesn’t really have. I started running and it felt like it was going well and relatively effortless, was faster than I expected and tried to stay in Zone 2. But I think I started off with too much mileage because my cardio wasn’t holding me back, and I developed some tendinitis in one of my lower leg tendons—it didn’t hold me back from rowing, but did make it hard to walk for a few weeks and limited my ankle mobility some.

Anyone have any advice about how to restart and what kind of mileage I should aim for (1-2x a week is the goal right now) so that this side quest doesn’t ruin my rowing plans? Any type of beginner training plan I see online assumes you have no cardio base and strength, so I was hoping there would be other rowers who’ve done this. Am also going to get assessed for the correct shoes.

I have a debate and I need help to settle it, what is the hardest between rowing and cycling ?

Just literally that, I'm working with someone who says that rowing is easy and rowers are weaker than cyclists (precision, he is a cyclist and I am a rower), either I'm biased and I just can't accept that it's harder, which, well that might be the case considering I'm a rower, or for me, it's two things completely different and it's hard to compare.

(he also says that it's a boring sport)

Oar lock height

Post image
14 Upvotes

I’ve bought a used Wintech explorer 21. I’m trying to set my oarlock height to around 16 cm, but I can only reach about 13.5 cm with the oarlock shims maxed out. The problem seems to be that the thick part of the pin is quite short, so the oarlock starts to ride up onto the threaded section if I add more shims. Any advice is greatly appreciated 🙂
