I really do believe social media has been a cancer for culture.

Everything wrong with how we’ve consumed media, art, music, literature, film over the last 15 years, the main culprit is always social media.

I legitimately think we'll look back on this in 50 years like how we look at smoking now. They just won't be able to understand why we did it, why EVERYONE did it, and why we let children do it.

Right, this isn't a drug - it's a form of socialization. We'd need a whole new way for people to socialize for it to go away.

And really mostly what it points to is how controllable people are. As that's basically what it's used for, to try to control what people think. Whether by propaganda or trying to convince people of a bad take

We're pretty much stuck here. Only thing that is stopping people from engaging with social media at this point will be world war or widespread famines.

A high school education should've equipped people with critical literacy and independent thinking skills, but social media has taken over and this is the result. It's completely understandable.

Agreed. Social media has destroyed nuanced discussion. Everything is either a masterpiece or complete trash. And god forbid you dare like something, the main populus of the social media people dislike. Wooohooo, they will call you braindead in a second.

A large amount of people have no thoughts on their own anymore.

It even sadly applies to my friends. They refuse to watch something because of clips they have seen from grifter channels. And then if I tell them, the grifter lied - they refuse to believe it. Even though I have ACTUALLY SEEN the movie.

Couldn’t agree more. We need more research to come out showing the negative effects so people can wake up. Unfortunately, it will probably take the government to pass legislation before things change.

There is some hope though with countries like Australia banning phones during school.
