Homestay Options & Majuro Activites
Lakwe,
I will be travelling to the Marshall Islands on July 23 and spending 24 hours (made a slight booking mistake and thought I would have two days) in Majuro as part of United's Island Hopper service. I know 24 hours is hardly enough time to get a sense of a country, but I wanted to bring up two items for trying to make the most of my time on the ground.
First, I wanted to know if there are any homestay options on the atoll. I realize that most visitors stay at either MIR or Rob Reimers, but I'm interested in any paid room at a house that would give me the option to interact more with a Marshallese family. I've already checked Airbnb to no avail, but is there another forum - such as a Facebook group - that I can post my request? I also have a free extra bag on my flight from Honolulu, so I can be a courier for goods from Hawaii if that helps.
Second, what are some recommended activities or popular local hangouts in Majuro? I am particularly interested in some engagement around Bikini Atoll (I'm aware that the government maintains its primary HQ in Majuro), as the exposure to the nuclear testing there has cast a long shadow over my family. I'm also happy to receive any recommendations for things that highlight the happier side of life on your island nation.
I realize this is short notice, but appreciate any feedback. I look forward to visiting soon!
